“Dean, how would you like to be a big brother?” Mary asked as she pulled her little boy onto her lap.

“A big bro'ver?” The boy repeated and scratched his head.

“Yes, but what do you need to be a big brother?” She couldn’t help the grin spreading across her face.

Dean thought for a moment before throwing his arms up and cheering,“A widdle bro'ver!”

“Right! Or a little sister,” Mary added. It was as if she could feel her heart expanding she felt so full of hope and love. She hoped that Dean would be this excited about the new baby once it was here, crying and needing her attention. “You can be my big helper. Babies need a lot of love.”

Dean climbed down from her lap and raced out of the room without a word. The shock of his sudden departure had Mary frozen with worry. She closed her eyes and breathed deeply, reminding herself that a new baby is always an adjustment.

“Momma!”

Mary opened her eyes to find her little boy setting her shoes beside her feet. “Dean… Angel, what are you doing?”

“‘Et’s go, momma,” Dean lifted Mary’s foot and placed her toes in her shoe. “Go get baby.”

Relief washed over her and her smile returned as she realized that not only did Dean want his brother or sister, he wanted them NOW.
