“Are you okay?” Jo hesitates, but Stevie shakes her head.

“Just keep going.” The hair on the ground is too much to look at, so she closes her eyes. “I’m okay, just keep going.” She digs her nails into the bare skin of her thigh as Jo starts up again, trying to focus on anything beside the sharp snipping of scissors gliding through her hair. The quiet thump of limp strands hitting the floor.

“So uh,” Jo breaks the silence, “the first time I cut my hair was when Lonnie left. I don’t know if you’d remember from when we were kids—well, I know we weren’t exactly friends , but we saw each other around.”

Stevie thinks back to long summer days at the playground, watching the tweedy little Byers siblings playing in the dirt from her spot atop the monkey bars. “I remember.” With her eyes still shut, she can see them clear as day. “Your hair was longer than mine.”
