According to Hyrule Historia, there is a timeline in which the Hero of Time fails to defeat Ganondorf, allowing him to have all the pieces of the Triforce and become the monster Ganon.  In a desperate last resort, the Sages seal Ganon along with the complete Triforce away in the Sacred Realm, leading to the events of A Link to the Past.

This comic is my interpretation of that event’s aftermath.  

I like to think that the place where the ALttP Link finds the Master Sword in the Lost Woods was where the Temple of Time and Hyrule Castle once stood but was destroyed by a rampaging Ganon, the very spot soon taken by the expanding forest (like in TP).  The hat that hangs over the legendary blade lies there, soon withering away to nothingness over time just like how the Hero of Time became a casualty statistic in the Downfall Timeline.
