Patricia Highsmith - brilliant writer, appallingly horrible person. “There can be little doubt that she was, at best, a challenging woman to be around.” Kept snails in her handbag and took them out at dinner parties.
Katie Brumbach ‘The Great Sandwina’ - circus strongwoman, undefeated wrestler and passionate women’s rights advocate. Chose her stage name after easily besting Eugene Sandow (leading strongman of the era) in a weightlifting competition.
Gertrude Jekyll - landscape architect and horticulturalist. She spread plants by firing seeds from a shotgun.
Sei Shonagon - author of The Pillow Book, a detailed, arch account of her court life in 11th century Japan. Entries include lots of lists, for example: “Adorable Things: the face of a child drawn on a melon. A young Palace page, who is still quite small, walks by in ceremonial costume.”
Alice Roosevelt - Teddy Roosevelt’s oldest kid. She was unapologetically eccentric, had a pet snake called Emily Spinach, smoked opium on a diplomatic mission and buried a voodoo doll of the following First Lady out the front of the White House.
