#internet – @jalopyrustbucket on Tumblr

The NotABlog

@jalopyrustbucket / jalopyrustbucket.tumblr.com

I haven't been on Tumblr in a few years. I see it hasn't improved at all. This is legitimately one of the worst large cesspools I've seen on the internet. Trust me, I've looked around. Many of you are legitimately evil and psychopathic people, and you think it's *cute*. Stop glorifying mental illness, for everyone's safety.

Honestly it would’ve been cool to be born in 1990, I’d have a 90s childhood and be a teenager in the early 2000s and now I’d be an adult! And I probably wouldn’t be on Tumblr! But also being able to experience the early internet in all it’s glory would be cool too, I vaguely remember the MySpace era but I was a little kid then.

Being born in 92 let me tell you I was at the forefront of social media shit. Facebook came about in my first year of high school.

The early internet was absolute chaos.

See, that’s the appeal, everything’s so sterile and based around marketing now, it’s boring. What happened to dumb flash animated glittery bullshit?

Candystand.com was a 4th graders paradise

@the-mighty-birdy if you want to experience the early internet in all its glory you would have had to be born in the 80’s

Dial up was something to marvelled at

I caught the tail end of it. My first computer memory is dial up

You had to download online games like ragnarok online in 15 megabyte chunks, then extract them all into the same folder.

Search engines weren't as developed as they are today, so a lot of web exploration was based on "web rings"; links on a website that led to related websites. A lot of exploration was also literally based on manually typing URLs into the address bar.

Netflix launched a site late Wednesday night called Fast.com, where — in one click — anyone browsing the internet can see how fast their internet speed is. Although it’s great for consumers, some internet providers might not be happy about the new website.

Fuck Comcast

Netflix didn’t invent that it’s been around

Netflix didn’t invent speed checks, but this site is Netflix’s.

Okay, so here’s why Netflix speedtest is so brilliant.

Most of us know about Speedtest.net, right? Well Comcast and Time Warner know about it too. They know customers use it to check to see if they’re getting what they are paying for. Comcast techs even tell customers to check their speed with Speedtest.net.

So, to make sure people think they are getting good speeds, Comcast and Time Warner prioritize traffic going to Speedtest.net. When you check your speed there it’s artificially inflated. That is NOT the speed you are getting when you browse tumblr and that is definitely not the speed you get when you watch Netflix.

Comcast and Time Warner can not artificially inflate the results by prioritizing traffic to Fast.net unless they also prioritize traffic to Netflix, and they definitely do not want to do that.

That is so fucking slimy. Good for Netflix

It’s worse, really: Speedtest is provided by a company named Ookla, who deploy the servers it uses. Companies like Comcast can pay to host those servers *on their networks*, and they do: next time you visit Speedtest.net, look for the line telling you who the server is provided by. If you use a big ISP, chances are its them.

This means the test never actually goes out over the Internet proper: it stays almost entirely within the bounds of your ISP’s network. Unless there’s an issue with your modem itself, that makes it a nearly useless metric.

Good Tools like Fast.com and DSLReports’ speed test test in multiple servers all over the Internet, and average the results. Use them.

the cable companies want you to believe they aren’t given you shit service even if they have to pay off sites made to keep you woke

Wouldn’t Comcast now risk government action if they throttle speeds in light of the Net Neutrality ruling?

Ebaums, though?

My teacher for Flash animation showed us a good bit of the first episode near the beginning of the class, sometime this January. Some things will never die.

Salad Fingers is kind of legendary in the world of surreal and weird flash cartoons.

Ebaum's world was just a site hosting stolen content without attribution.

A lot of the early good stuff, before YouTube, and before newgrounds, was hosted on sites like albinoblacksheep.

Designed to be hip, exciting, and fast-paced, Erin stood for everything Esurance believed in. She was not only the company’s answer to Geico’s ubiquitous gecko, but a formidable marketing tool for recruiting their intended demographic — 18 to 24 year-old males — into insurance policies.
Unfortunately, that demographic liked Erin so much that they made porn of her. Lots of porn. So much porn that, at the height of the mascot’s popularity, 9 of the top 10 image results in an unfiltered Google search for “Erin Esurance” ended up being these amatuer artists’ racy renderings.

Americans watching football like

While I figure this is meant to be a joke, I thought I would look into it for curiosity’s sake….and I’m really not sure what to think of what I saw, or if I wanted to see it at all, for that matter.

First and foremost, it’s worthwhile to note that the twitter user in question claims the owner is from London. However, given what I’ve seen, I wouldn’t be too sure she even knows what London is.

There’s so much to say, but it’s much easier to just show you.

She’s gotta be, nobody is this clueless, right?

Trust me. I wish I could agree. However, this account has been active since 2009. That’s 5 years. I went through a bit of the history, and unless this person somehow kept up a consistent facade of ignorance almost every day for the past 5 years, there’s no way. I have to enforce poe’s law here, and assume she’s serious….which, sadly, seems the more likely conclusion anyways.

Now of course, not knowing the countries and other locations of the world by heart is by no means offensive. However, some of what I found on this feed was a tad less harmless.

First though, a few more tweets that lead to my belief that this is not a troll.

Perhaps this is simply bias on my part, due to my prior knowledge that jersey numbers are just based on the player’s favorite or preferred number, I thought this was common knowledge. Feel free to correct me on this if I’m wrong though.

She’s more worried about “Boys being in her course” than she is about working towards her future and doing what she enjoys, which would suggest she has a loose grasp on just how important the decisions she makes now will be when (if) she graduates. I would say it also perhaps suggests a lack of fair judgement skills.

But let’s get down to the real nitty-gritty.

First, this. This is just….creepy. Now, I’m sure you’re probably wondering why I’m even making this post, but I assure you, what I’m doing here will tie into some advice I plan to give you all later on.

Also, for those wondering what “Sket” means, it’s another term for “Slut”. This is just gross. I mean Grossberg’s hemorrhoids level gross. It’s hateful, and while some people may find it funny, it’s still pretty disturbing. It makes no sense to insult people for sleeping in whatever they want to sleep in.

It gets worse too.

While this may sound like she’s defending the Nigerians and calling the commentators out for racism, she also retweeted this only a short while earlier.

Why am I bringing all this up?

Because I want you to realize just how easy it is for people to find what you say online. Because I know a lot of tumblr users are teenagers, who probably don’t always think before they type. All I had to do here was look up “Princess Petulia”. If I wanted to, I could have scrolled through her entire history, including whatever personal info that could have been posted.

Imagine if I were an employer, and I decided to background check her for this. How do you think that would look? Like a good first impression?

Or what if I were a criminal? I could probably learn numerous things about her just by looking through her feed, because she carelessly posts so much.

I didn’t even have to follow her to see all this, it was just there, out in the open.

I know it may not seem like it could happen to you. But nobody is invincible. Always think about who might see the things you post. If you’re going to post personal info, please be sure that you are prepared for the worst, just in case.

The internet is not your “Safe space”, no matter how badly you may want to believe it is. We love all of our followers, and as such, we want you to be safe.

I know this technically isn’t social justice, but I feel that branching out and addressing other topics can be important as well, so feel free to ask us for advice if you need any. While we may not be licensed therapists or anything, we’ll gladly do our best to help.

Thanks for listening, and please, be safe!

I gotta say, while I don't agree with ANY of the reasons why SJWs hate bronies, I can't help but hate them, or to be more exact the fandom. I just hate the fact that MLP is literally EVERYWHERE nowadays. I can't go a single day of browsing the internet without coming across something MLP related. Not only that, it's being combined with fandoms that are pretty much the opposite of MLP. It pretty much infects Fallout (a game series if you didn't know) like a cancer. You're pretty cool though

Sorry, man.  I can’t deny that I also insert ponies into genres where they REALLY don’t belong…

There’s just something inherently humorous in injecting these adorable little ponies into these various Crapsack Worlds.

I know it can get annoying to see something everywhere you look (believe me - I’ve had more than my fill of a few fandoms and movie franchises out there), but you just gotta learn to let it slide right by.  It only gets to you if you let it get to you. :3

Don't forget that there was a rule about there being a touhou crossover with everything years before mlp:fun came along.

Touhou is one of those Japanese bullet hell game series. Most of the content related to touhou, the comics, art, several fangames, all the animations, are done by fans. Touhou was the proto-mlp:fim as far as fandom participation came along.

Or, you could look at it like the presence of memes in Internet culture in general. I'm sure there are people who don't like memes, but they show up. They have their place in Internet culture. Ditto for mlp.

NOOOOOOOOO

Why is this a NOOOOO? I mean, its a silly concept, but is that really a warranted response?

Because its just so cringe worthy

Indeed, but it’s not really anything big. It’s just people tired of being bullied for being bronies. I suppose they could be against bullying totally, but they chose to limit themselves.

God damned pony fuckers.

Thank you for your reasoned and well thought-out critique.

If you have any female relatives in the target demographic, you would hate how bronies produce R34/Grimdark/rape jokes that make it unsafe for her.

You are a complete and utter idiot if you think anything is making it “unsafe” for anyone to enjoy a TV show, let alone a child that should only be on the computer with parental permission (and the parent should have proper filters and restrictions set on their computer beforehand), or shouldn’t be left on the computer alone whatsoever if the parent is so deathly afraid of what the child may find.

I also have a niece in the target demographic who owns her own iPad, yet has never encountered anything thus far that has bothered her.

In any case, I have already covered this general topic multiple times, including here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here.

You cannot police the world, nor is it the rest of the world’s responsibility to “clean up its act” just because a parent thinks it’s okay to let the computer babysit their child for them.  If you’re going to think this way, then I invite you to set a child you know loose, alone, at night, in the middle of Medellin, Columbia with a shirt that says “Please behave yourselves and be nice to me while I am here”, and see how that works out for you.

What personally offends you does not speak for everyone else.  Just because you can’t control your own emotions in regards to something, that by no means makes it the responsibility of the rest of the world to control them for you.  That’s like not socializing a Rottweiler, and then blaming the rest of the world when it gets loose and tears the legs off a kindergartener.  Take responsibility for your own flaws.

I’m not about to paint my house blue just because you don’t like its current color.

*maude flanders voice* WON'T SOMEONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN?

That’s the other thing that floors me.

These people are claiming that a fan base “took a show away from little girls”, but fail to show reasonable justification of this.

How, exactly, is anyone keeping those girls from watching television?  How is anyone keeping them from buying toys, playing with said toys, or dressing up as their favorite characters?  Nearly all the pony-related conventions that exist were set up by older fans, for older fans.  “Fandoms” are really not a child-driven thing in the first place.  Children don’t participate in their appreciation for a show the way older fans do.  They don’t know what “memes” are, or what “cosplay” is, nor do they care.  Nonetheless, when people do bring their children to conventions, you see fans allowing the children to do things first, go ahead of them in lines, or letting them ask questions of the show staff and voice actors before anyone else.  Obliging cosplayers are usually more than happy to pose for pictures with kids if they ask.

What they similarly fail to take into account is that kids usually think it’s pretty damn awesome if someone older enjoys the same things that they do.  I remember shopping one day while wearing my Fluttershy shirt (which I sadly can’t wear anymore, because it somehow gained a noticeable hole right over the left boob), and a little girl excitedly said to her mom, “Mama, look!  She’s got Fluttershy on her shirt!”.  Also, though it’s not related to ponies, I have become the “cool aunt” to my nephews because I like to watch Regular Show and Adventure Time.

Meanwhile, I have had multiple people in my inbox with little sisters that enjoy the show that also use the internet, and have yet to stumble upon anything questionable.  This also applies to my niece, who has her own iPad.  Besides that, I’ve already discussed previously that it is not the fault of the internet what it contains, nor the fault of anyone producing the content therein.  If a child comes upon something of a more mature nature while on the internet by themselves, it’s the parent that should be held accountable for not setting limits and filters, as well as letting the child browse the internet alone if they’re so goddamn terrified of what it contains.

That’s like saying that if a kid goes to a library and finds an Erica Jong novel, then it’s the fault of the public library for carrying such a diverse selection, and the fault of the author for writing the books she wants to.
