I worry about the control that big corporations have over information. The danger is we get into the situation that existed in the Soviet Union with their papers, Pravda, which means “truth” and Izvestia, which means “news”. The joke was, there was no truth in Pravda and no news in Izvestia. Corporations will always promote stories that reflect well on them and suppress those that don’t.

Unless we learn how to prepare for, and avoid, the potential risks, AI could be the worst event in the history of our civilization. It brings dangers, like powerful autonomous weapons, or new ways for the few to oppress the many. It could bring great disruption to our economy.

I knew it’s also true that a good way to invent the future is to predict it. So I predicted Utopia, hoping to give Liberty a running start before the laws of Moore and Metcalfe delivered up what Ed Snowden now correctly calls “turn-key totalitarianism”.

I moved on her actually. You know she was down on Palm Beach. I moved on her and I failed. I’ll admit it. I did try and fuck her. She was married … No, no. Nancy. No this was—and I moved on her very heavily. In fact, I took her out furniture-shopping. She wanted to get some furniture. I said, ‘I’ll show you where they have some nice furniture.’ I took her out furniture … I moved on her like a bitch, but I couldn’t get there. And she was married. Then all of a sudden I see her, she’s now got the big phony tits and everything. She’s totally changed her look … Yeah, that’s her, with the gold. I’ve got to use some Tic Tacs, just in case I start kissing her. You know I’m automatically attracted to beautiful—I just start kissing them. It’s like a magnet. I just kiss. I don’t even wait. And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything … Grab them by the pussy. You can do anything.

Yet we forget those face-to-face lessons. We see the pettiest squabbles delivered in blog comments. We sit comfortably lecturing others on why they are wrong. On the internet, we see leftists sealing themselves off from rightists; rightists sealing themselves off from leftists; and no one ever seems to want to understand the other side as a few minor parties engineer campaigns of hate. Isolation and polarization seem to be the order of the day, whether one is arguing about war, health care, or international politics. Our squabbles and our division are exactly what the terrorists want to see from us.

I wrote this in 2009, and it seems even more relevant today (apart from the blog thing, because we now do this on social media). Here’s the link.

Look, having nuclear—my uncle was a great professor and scientist and engineer, Dr John Trump at MIT—good genes, very good genes, OK, very smart, the Wharton School of Finance, very good, very smart. You know, if you’re a conservative Republican, if I were a liberal, if, like, OK, if I ran as a liberal Democrat, they would say I’m one of the smartest people anywhere in the world. It’s true! But when you’re a conservative Republican they try—oh, do they do a number—that’s why I always start off: went to Wharton, was a good student, went there, went there, did this, built a fortune—you know, I have to give my like credentials all the time, because we’re a little disadvantaged—but you look at the nuclear deal, the thing that really bothers me—it would have been so easy, and it’s not as important as these lives are (nuclear is so powerful; my uncle explained that to me many, many years ago, the power and that was 35 years ago; he would explain the power of what’s going to happen and he was right—who would have thought?), but when you look at what’s going on with the four prisoners—now it used to be three, now it’s four—but when it was three and even now, I would have said it’s all in the messenger; fellas, and it is fellas because, you know, they don’t, they haven’t figured that the women are smarter right now than the men, so, you know, it’s gonna take them about another 150 years—but the Persians are great negotiators, the Iranians are great negotiators, so, and they, they just killed, they just killed us.

Little Davey had his friend Boris over to play. They chose to play with two toys—the UK and EU. Unfortunately, Boris’s play was a bit rough and he broke both the UK and EU. Davey is now sorry that he ever shared these toys and no longer wants to play. Boris still wants to play, but he is on his own and only has two broken toys to play with. The playground bullies, Donald and Vladimir have invited Boris over to their homes. Boris doesn’t understand who made this mess.

There are many white people who mean right and in their heart want to do right, but there are so few. If 10,000 snakes were coming down that aisle now, and I had a door that I could shut, and in that 10,000, 1,000 meant right, 1,000 rattlesnakes didn’t want to bite me, I knew they were good, should I let all these rattlesnakes come down, hoping that that thousand get together and form a shield? Or should I just close the door and stay safe? Do you understand? The Viet Cong, they’re not all bad but America’s still dropping bombs. In Hiroshima, Japan weren’t bad but she still dropped the bomb. In Korea they weren’t bad but they still dropped a bomb. So now I’m going to forget the 400 years of lynching and killing and raping and depriving my people of freedom and justice and equality, first fired, last hired, the lowest of the low, last respected, and I’m gonna look at two or three white people who are trying to do right, and don’t see the other million trying to kill me? I’m not that big of a fool, and I’m not going to deny it.

Listen, pal. I spent 22 years in the Navy. My father was in the Navy. My grandfather was in the Navy. We in the military service tend to move a lot. We have to live in all parts of the country, all parts of the world. I wish I could have had the luxury, like you, of growing up and living and spending my entire life in a nice place like the First District of Arizona, but I was doing other things. As a matter of fact, when I think about it now, the place I lived longest in my life was Hanoi.
