Daft name, smarter looks The Opel–Vauxhall Crossland looks all right to me. Might do better than the Meriva it replaces.

Opel Calibra 1989. On its launch the Calibra was the most aerodynamic production car in the world, it was also sold as a Vauxhall (in the UK), Chevrolet (in South Africa) and a Holden (Australasia). Although admired for its design (by the German Designer, Erhard Schnell) the Calibra’s ride and handling were nothing special as it used the same platform as the Vectra saloon. It was not replaced when production ceased in 1999.

Opel Calibra One of my favourites. Yes, the handling was imprecise and far too light because of the Vectra origins, and the entire dashboard was lifted out of the saloon as well, but that body still looks the business. It was also the most aerodynamic production car at launch in 1989, with a Cd of 0,26. Anyone spot the big error above? It ceased production in 1997, and it could be said that the smaller Astra G Coupé attempted to fill its role. There’s more about Erhard Schnell here.

OL1 V3R Can someone explain to me how Richard Hammond’s vanity licence plate for his Opel Kadett A is legal in the UK? Or is it a phony?

I always understood that vanity plates in the UK followed the convention of regular ones and I know of no British territory that has this two-letter, one-number, one-letter, one-number, one-letter sequence. So how did the Hamster acquire OL1 V3R?

Better than how the chavs modify their Calibras In some of the old (2005–6) episodes of Alarm für Cobra 11, eagle-eyed viewers will notice Tom Kranich’s Mercedes-Benz CLK gets replaced by an Opel Calibra when it’s about to be smashed. Notice the angle of the A-pillars in the first photograph of this sequence, and, in the last shot, what an excellent job the production designers have done on disguising an old Opel as a Mercedes-Benz.

There are some behind-the-scenes photographs of the “Opel CLK” here.
