Quick and mostly irrelevant thoughts from a brand consultant, author, magazine publisher, and typeface designer.

Banacek v. Manacek I was very surprised to watch earlier this year a Simpsons episode, ‘Homer Is Where the Art Isn’t’, that parodied the George Peppard series, Banacek. The Simpsons’ typography attempted to copy the titles from the first season, even though Helvetica Oblique is not the same as Folio Italic. The scenes, however, were inspired by the opening titles in the later episodes of the second season. While the rowing on the Boston River is common to all Banacek episodes, beginning with the pilot, the Packard scene appears only in season two, and Peppard with the unnamed blonde only show up in the titles of the last few.     Not that many people will remember Banacek, which lasted only two seasons, so it was a surprise that The Simpsons would use it as a source. Nevertheless, I’m grateful that they did. Sometimes it’s nice being part of a small group of cognoscenti. And I do seem to know a lot of obscure TV within certain genres.    The original Banacek theme tune by Billy Goldenberg (who also composed the best known Kojak theme, as well as that of Rhoda, and Duel on the big screen) was used, though it was sad to note that long-time Simpsons composer Alf Clausen did not do the score. A bit of digging revealed that after 27 years, Clausen was fired in a phone call. That’s a pretty awful way to treat someone who’s worked with you for so long.

Request denied According to Tumblr, I am not allowed to repost this Star Wars video. Not sure why, but let’s see if it works, since others are allowed to. Oh, and ITC Franklin Gothic is the wrong typeface (if we’re following Episodes IV through VII).

She had one turkey Once upon a time, when NBC was a struggling network, it tried to ape the success of CBS’s The Mary Tyler Moore Show with The Avengers’ (the real one) Diana Rigg in Diana. The premise: a London fashion designer moves to New York in the hope of hitting the big time. It didn’t work, and the show was cancelled within months.

The Good Life The Americans had a sitcom called The Good Life years before the one with Richard Briers and Felicity Kendall—though with a very different premise. Note that the theme tune is adapted from the English lyrics of Sacha Distel’s ‘La belle vie’, made popular by Tony Bennett as ‘The Good Life’.

Mike P. Mitchell:I’m With Coco
Spread the word. Show your support. Coco 4 Prez. Etc.

Having read up on t’internets I can now say that I too am with CoCo. I really like Leno but they gave Conan the job so they can’t just go shaft him now.

I’m with Coco, too I say put Leno in to an American version of Top Gear and let him host it. The guy would love that.

And he did write the monorail episode of The Simpsons. Thanks to him, I now know of North Haverbrook and Ogdenville. Conan put them on the map.

Interesting to see the Gotham typeface return. Hey, it worked for Obama.
