There is English, then there are mistakes So handy for the American State Department to admit to its country’s many errors in contributing to global misunderstanding. However, the US gets one word right above: apologize. A study of the Concise Oxford English Dictionary (or any UK-published dictionary from the OUP) shows that that is the correct spelling; -ize is British, -ise is French (there are exceptions, of course, such as exercise). It was only during the 20th century that people began promoting the notion that -ize is American and -ise is British, but it is not borne out by the etymology. Look through British publications of, say, 50 to 100 years ago, and you’ll find -ize being the correct suffix.

Binary gendered language is one of those things that often goes unnoticed even at churches that are trying to be LGBTQ inclusive. Breaking the binary is a simple change that can make a difference.
