One of the things I love about Buffy is that it presents knowledge and research as an absolutely vital part of the process of world saveage. So much of the show is dedicated to the characters sitting around doing research. And that’s pretty rare. Usually if research is a plot device in these kind of shows, it happens off screen. Which does kind of make sense on a storytelling level - it’s not usually that interesting to watch people look stuff up. But I really like that BtVS finds a way to make it interesting, not only because it leads to a lot of great group scenes, but also because it foregrounds the value of educating oneself about something before engaging with it. Which, you know, is an excellent value to foreground.

This post was very much inspired by this tweet.

she was at the club. it didnt change anything. it didnt save anyone. there were just too many forces against it. but it still matters that she was at the club.

The F is club here? Is that your new slang?

so the club is a place where they play music and you can dance. they usually serve drinks there also.

What difference does it make whether she was there or not? You say it matters. What's the point?

well i just think it's nice that she got to party a little.

it is like crazy how oz's breakup with willow and riley's breakup with buffy play out basically the same way. in both cases there's a lack of sexual passion or interest from the girls, and both guys feel that and respond to it by secretly cheating on the girls with women who are actually sexually desirous of them (and also are monstrous in some way) and then after the girls confront them about it the guys leave instead of trying to fix the relationship. there truly is such a queer bent to it, like with willow it's clear that she really likes oz and she finds his presence comforting and reassuring but she's not all that sexually interested in him. and most of the time oz seems cool with that, which tbh is probably part of why she likes him, but when we get to the werewolf lady plot it seems that he's gotten frustrated with it and just wants to be with someone who is actually into him. which honestly is reasonable! but it motivates him to behave very badly. oz's abrupt departure makes more sense if you read it as him picking up on some level that the relationship isn't gonna work because willow isn't actually attracted to him. and the whole thing kind of makes more sense in retrospect because later you see willow with tara and you're like oh so THAT'S what it looks like when willow is with a romantic partner she's truly deeply devoted to. and you realize how much her relationship with oz was lacking. as for buffy, it's kind of similar to how willow felt with oz, where she finds riley convenient and nice but she doesn't actually really want him, and riley starts seeing the vampire lady because he wants to be wanted. the buffy and riley falling out is written in a way that seems much more aware of the dysfunction of the relationship. and also seems really gay! because of course buffy next sets her eyes on spike and you all know ive decided spike is a lesbian. but also if buffy had gotten with a woman after the breakup with riley that also totally would have made sense

we need more concerning women in media. I want to be watching a TV show and to go "oh that woman has problems." I want to watch a woman constantly make the worst decisions in the world with no sign of stopping
