While there’s no shortage of *snikt!* and perforation of bad guys in this flick, the headline is the fact that this is likely the most human of the Marvel adaptations I’ve seen in any medium. If you sideline the mutie stuff, it’s a story about a guy at the bottom of the shit slope, and the people who are depending on him nevertheless.
Wolverine’s relationships, never the stablest part of his story, take center stage, with Patrick Stewart in a star turn as the aged, infirm and medicated Prof. Charles Xavier near the end of his life, and charismatic newcomer Dafne Keen as Laura, the child everyone’s chasing.
It’s compelling and engaging, both on a visual/action level and on a level of emotional engagement that is uncommon for the genre. Yes, Uncle Ben’s death is a bummer, and Tony Stark’s drinking is an issue, but this is about elder care and problem kids you have to keep close.
Two thumbs up.
P.S. No kicker after the credits, but it does open with a Deadpool short that’s as self-referential as a Daffy Duck cartoon, down to the Logan on the marquee of the movie theater across the street from Deadpool.
Also, no Stan Lee cameos, but with such a somber tone in the film, that's understandable.
