Seein' too many Twitter refugees asking if they'll get in trouble for saying "kill yourself" to people and while no, you're not gonna get nuked from orbit, that is maybe something you just shouldn't be doing in general perhaps?? Maybe telling people to kill themselves is bad actually?? Some of y'all are wild, why is the first thing you can think to ask on a new platform if you can send one of the worst kinds of harassment to people?? Grow tf up and learn how to use the block button. It'll do wonders for your mood, trust me.
Hey so uh… if you tell a stranger you want to hurt them online, they’re going to assume you’re being serious. It doesn’t matter how old you are, how far away you live, or even if you’re physically able to carry out the threat. There’s a lot of violence in the world and no way to tell the difference between a legitimate threat and exaggeration when the source is just an anonymous Tumblr user. Lots of people assume threats are legitimate for a variety of reasons, including a healthy dose of self-preservation. It doesn’t matter if you meant it as a joke or an overblown way of expressing your feelings, you’re still making another human being fear for their personal safety.
If a stranger came up to me on the street and said “I want to throw rocks at your head until you bleed,” I would run. I don’t care if they’re not actually holding a rock right now or are 12 years old or look pretty harmless, I’m not taking that chance. They could mean it as a joke, but I can’t be sure and I’m not going to bet my head on something I’m not sure of.
The internet is the same way. If someone online says they want to hurt me, I’m not going to laugh at their cool joke. I’m going to go make sure my front door is locked because for all I know, this shit could be real.
