Digimon Headcanons: Taichi's name
This is something I’ve always liked about anime series - even the names of the characters are chosen according to the role they play. One of my favourites is Taichi Yagami’s name and its meaning in the original Japanese version:
Yagami Taichi
» Ya [八] [や]: Eight
» Gami/Kami [神] [かみ]: God
» Ta [太] [た]: A lot, Great
» Ichi [一] [いち]: One, The number one, in Japan it is traditionally believed male people with “-ichi” in their names are strong and powerfull natural leaders. There was a time parents used this kanji in the name of their first child.
So, Taichi’s name actually means “The Great One of the Eight Gods”, something along this concept. I find this interesting in many different ways. First, the number of Chosen Children is actually eight. Second, the crest of Courage has the shape of a Sun that has eight surrounding triangles (Hikari’s star shaped crest also has eight rays of light).
Most main Gods of ancient mythos are symbolized by the Sun. Sun generates life, it is the center of the solar system and also the force directing the orbit of the surrounding planets. Gods like Ra are usually portraited as “the father” to other minor Gods.
Now, something I kind of enjoy here is the translation of “Kami” to “God” has never been completely accurate. The meaning of “Kami” has been distorted even to Japanese people, mostly because of western religious influences and beliefs. The original meaning of “Kami” is far from being the same the words “god” or “God” mean. The original translation of “kami” used to be “spirit”, the idiogram of "kami” being 神. As you know, most if not all kanji have Chinese origins. In China you read this “shen”, which means “spirit”, “soul”, “mind”, “supernatural being”. This kanji is also used to define one of the Three Jewels of Tao. And according to Tao, everybody possesses “kami”, although not everybody develops enough to become manifest in divine form. Besides, there are “good kami” and “bad kami” (also known as “Majin”).
Now, think about it. Did you ever wonder how Gennai realize there was an eighth child? I think maybe… just maybe… Taichi’s name might have been his clue.
Last but not least: remember when the children first went to the Digital World? It was on August 1st, the first day of the eighth month of the Year. Those numbers are also part of Taichi’s name.
A kind thank you to everybody who has stopped by my Picarto channel today! _o/ Until next time!
