I do sort of wish western anime fans would analyze anime and manga from a framework of japanese historical and cultural context. Specifically a lot of works from the 90s being influenced by the general aimlessness and ennui that a lot of people were experiencing due to the burst in the bubble economy and the national trauma caused by the sarin terrorist attack. I think in interacting with media that’s not local to our sociocultural/sociopolitical sphere it’s easy to forget that it’s influenced and shaped by the same kinds of factors that influence media within our own cultural dome and there ends up being this baseline misalignment of perception between the causative elements of a narrative and viewer interpretation of those elements. It’s a form of death of the author that i think, in some measure, hinders our ability to fully understand/come to terms with creator intent and the full scope of a work’s merits

Tumblr tags of the month award goes to:

No i think we can understand. I think sometimes writers make it overtly clear what they meant and intended when they write something a certain way and understanding the societal context around that decision is a key component of achieving that understanding. Why do people treat death of the author as if its strictly necessitated by every narrative ever. Weird comment to leave on a post specifically about how expanding your knowledge of world history is actually important when you interpret works from outside your cultural sphere

Megumi Ogata Livedoor Interview (May 2018) [2/2]

I could make it this far because I overcame that adversity. Megumi Ogata on fighting to the end with Kurama during her newcomer period.

Part 1

Even though they called me, “Impertinent.” The days of fighting for my juniors.

In the 1990′s, Megumi Ogata played a role in what people would call the, “Third Voice Actor Boom.” Voice actors’ work expanded into radio shows, the music industry, gravure-style photoshoots, and more. As someone who was a leader during the boom, she has more stories than she can count, including ones that, even looking back on them now, are beyond imagination.

Digimon Tri, 2015 | Odaiba 2015

Childhood nostalgia meets travel nostalgia!

Odaiba has seen way too many anime cameos to count, but I was compelled to do Digimon Tri when I saw this area featured; aptly enough it was also one of the first areas I’ve visited on my first trip to Japan. I don’t think the fans of anime/manga who make their pilgrimages to comiket would need much introduction to this area, but just for noting, the locations covered were Palette Town, Fuji TV Building and Decks Tokyo Beach.  There’re a lot more spots worth visiting in this area for sure, would recommend a late afternoon to night visit, because the view is stunning at night!

Random muse: This escalator at the edge of Tokyo Decks was set as an up escalator, not a down escalator as was shown in the anime. Yes I know escalators can be programmed to move either way, but when you only have one escalator in the area the default choice would usually be to set it as an up escalator as it’s tougher navigating up stairs than down, just saying!

Other fandom travel musings: [Kyoukai no Kanata] Nara [Tsuritama!] Enoshima Island I & II [Free!] Iwami, Tottori | Sydney I  & II [Durarara!!] Ikebukuro | [Durarara!! X2] Ikebukuro I & II & 3 [Haikyuu!!] Sendai City Gym, Miyagi [TWEWY] Shibuya

LOL!!! SERIOUSLY. I remember the first time I trekked around Odaiba in 2011…I was screaming to myself inwardly that I was treading on Digimon grounds. I even bought a ticket to go up the Fuji TV tower and was thinking of Wizardmon. xD It was so surreal.  They even still had those framed rectangular walkways. xD

THIS POST IS IMPORTANT.

It’s interesting to note that that the garments that have a cross over style when worn correctly are all worn with the left breast over the right.

That is because these countries tend to wrap right over left when they are wrapping the dead.

Here are what some men’s fashion looks like if anyone is interested.

These are very nice. :)

when a film or tv show takes place somewhere where you have been, it is your sacred duty as viewer to say “i’ve been there” every time you recognize a place

Tokyo has only two accessible beaches: Kasai Rinkai Park and Odaiba, pictured above. You’re not allowed to swim at either, but you wouldn’t want to, since the bay is full of rubbish. If you go to Odaiba very early on a weekday, you can escape Tokyo’s crowds. The beach is almost empty except for dog lovers (happiness), and it’s a lovely quiet walk with views of Rainbow Bridge, the Statue of Liberty, the Gundam statue and (in early summer) miles of hydrangeas along the shore. Bonus joy: traveling on the fully automated Yurikamome Line.

cultural differences for setting a fic in japan

(please note that i am a japanese american living/working in japan and not a japanese person raised in japan. my experiences are my own and other prefectures, etc. may be different.)

Law/Adult Society

  • The age of majority is currently 20, although I believe as of 2022, it will be lowered to 18. Currently, people under the age of 20 cannot sign lease contracts for cars, apartments, etc. without parental permission.
  • The word “sign” is figurative here, because Japan uses seals on official documents, instead of Western-style signatures. People tend to have a few different types of seals, depending on the importance of the document.
  • All dates on government forms are in Japanese eras. 2018 was year 30 of the Heisei era and a new era will start when the emperor abdicates in April of this year.
  • As of 2016, the voting age in Japan is 18 (previously it was 20). You can also start learning to drive at age 18. However, the drinking age is 20, and you also have to be 20 to smoke or gamble.
  • Japanese convenience store and supermarket workers are frequently lax about checking IDs for alcohol and cigarette purchases, and underage smoking in particular is a large problem.
