Maintaining trans friendly spaces cannot be done through performative action – it requires active and self-aware participation. Simply putting up a no terf sign, and deleting terf posts is only the first step!
You have to engage in thoughtful consideration of how these ideologies spread, and remain mindful of language and aggression left unsaid.
You have to actively question your own ideology for transphobia.
Above all. Above above all, you have to put forward messages of support, love and respect for trans people.
Too many people get caught up in a game of social politics, and forget the vulnerable people we should be working to protect and support. This isn’t about the bigots, this is about loving and supporting trans people.
Things you can do to help support the trans community!
Remember being a good person is about working to be a better one!
They/them as a singular pronoun should be respected, not only because we use it that way on a day to day basis or because of any of a plethora of grammatical arguments, but because people deserve to have their pronouns respected.
Neopronouns/alternative pronouns should be respected, not only because the arguments that they’re a new “trend” can be easily refuted, but because people deserve to have their pronouns respected.
Share these types of facts to refute the arguments people have made against singular they and against neopronouns, absolutely. But don’t forget that these pronouns should be respected without having to have an argument in the first place.

Being nonbinary does not require a wholesale rejection of everything associated with the binary genders ever.
Being nonbinary means to have a gender identity different or more than your assigned gender and outside of the traditional binary genders. You can have a fluid gender, multiple genders, no gender. Manhood and womanhood can be elements of your gender as well; you can be aligned to either or both binary genders, be genderfluid between them, be bigender.
You do not have to have a gender neutral name or go by exclusively gender neutral pronouns and titles. You do not have to strive to be as genderless in appearance and expression as possible.
Masculinity and femininity do not belong to the binary. She/her and he/him pronouns do not belong to the binary. Dresses, ties, and makeup do not belong to the gender binary. Specific names do not belong to the gender binary. Gay and lesbian identities do not belong to the gender binary.
Having a gender that isn’t binary doesn’t mean that you have to reject everything ever associated with womanhood or manhood. You can keep that which is meaningful to you and let go of the rest. You can have elements of either binary gender, and you can have some of both. Being nonbinary is ultimately about expressing your gender in the way that feels most authentic to you.
(Image description: a square image with a trans flag on the left hand side and black text over a white background on the right hand side, the two sides are divided by a black border; the text on the right side is a quote by trans pride flag creator Monica Helms that reads: “The stripes at the top and bottom are light blue, the traditional color for baby boys. The stripes next to them are pink, the traditional color for baby girls. The stripe in the middle is white, for those who are intersex, transitioning or consider themselves having a neutral or undefined gender. The pattern is such that no matter which way you fly it, it is always correct, signifying us finding correctness in our lives.”)
