to be perfectly honest, my mood when it comes to fandom creations these days is basically:

I don't care if it's good. I don't care if it's finished. I don't care if it's cringe. I don't care if someone else did it first. I don't care if no one else cares at all. What I care about is whether or not I cackled with glee while making it.

If you or someone you know is getting spam comments from guests (rather than logged in users), you don't need to send in a report. You can just use the Spam button located at the bottom of every guest comment. The button will only be visible to the logged-in owner of the work.

If the volume of these spam comments is overwhelming, you can also edit a single work or edit multiple works to restrict commenting to only logged in users.

If you're a twitter user, I recommend following AO3_status over there. They're always on top of updates about site downtime and other issues.

I know social media is full of death threats and suicide baiting and violence all over the place, and I know people often use this form of language in a sarcastic way, but please know that if I see that bullshit in my notes at all, you’re blocked. No second chances. No excuses.

It’s harassment, and it’s unacceptable, and I have a zero tolerance policy for that kind of bullshit. Don’t let the screendoor hit you in the ass on the way out.

You can turn off the ability for people to reblog one of your tumblr posts.

Go to the original post, not a reblog. Then edit the post by tapping the pencil icon (screenshot below)

Then, tap on the three dots in the top right corner, next to the Post button (screenshot below)

A menu will appear from the bottom of your screen. Tap on Reblog control (screenshot below)

Change the setting from Anyone on tumblr to No one

Save your changes by hitting the Post button

Editing to add: this is available in the New Post Beta, not classic tumblr, and it seems to be mobile only

Post Beta is also available on desktop.

You might be prompted by a purple 'Beta' box in the top right, and moving the slider from left to right should turn it green and trigger the new post settings (the page may reload).

Then the gear symbol in the top right of the post will have the ability to turn off reblogs third down and with an orange bubble labeled 'New':

Who can reblog? Choose who can reblog this post. Anyone mentioned can always reblog.

I just wanted to put this out there. If you're someone who tries to comment on fics. If you're someone who tries to reblog art and headcanons and meta. If you're someone who wants to let creators know that you appreciate their creations.

You're doing enough. You're doing more than enough.

Please don't feel guilty for the times that you can't or the times that you forget or the times that you just don't know what to say.

You're appreciated, even when you don't speak up. You're welcome in fandom, even if you don't speak up at all.

You don't have to pay a fee to enjoy someone's creation. It's incredibly appreciated when you do, but it's not a requirement. You're welcome in this space either way. ❤

Things that are still writing even if you don't think they are (an incomplete list)

  • thinking about a story
  • creating a new document
  • brainstorming
  • researching
  • thinking of a title
  • explaining your story to someone else
  • reading other stories and noticing things like word choice, sentence structure, plot development, characterization
  • thinking of a great line that doesn't have a story yet
  • getting a picture in your mind that you want to put into words someday
  • being inspired by others, even if you don't know what to do with that inspiration yet
  • making notes about how you want to tag your work
  • editing
  • cutting out lines or scenes that don't work
  • stopping work on something that isn't working right now
  • starting over
  • writing a summary
  • rewriting something you've written before

to all the people in the notes saying that if this is true, they're writing all the time: yes. yes you are.

to all of the shy or quiet people out there

to the people who are too anxious to speak up

to those who are too worried about their language abilities to say something

it’s okay to read fic or look at art or watch videos and not say anything

yes, creators want to hear from people who enjoy their content, but your feelings matter too.

it’s okay if you can’t find the words right now

it’s okay if you don’t have the energy to speak up

it’s okay if you’re overwhelmed or you’re overthinking or you’re just coming up blank

you’re still a fan. you’re still a part of the fandom. you still belong here. we still love you. ❤

↖ This user appreciates likes just as much as reblogs. They understand that likes are used to show support and to mark posts for later reblogging. They know that people have more than one blog and that likes are assigned to the main blog even when reblogs occur on sideblogs.

This user is fully aware that reblogs are important in order for a post to reach a wider audience, but they still appreciate getting a ❤ because it means someone saw and acknowledged their post and making that connection with another person is important, even if the post doesn’t go any further than that.

This user knows that sometimes a like is all of the interaction you can manage with a post, and this user wants you to know that that’s totally okay. You keep scrolling, you funky little tumblrite.

This user hopes you have a great day.

Anonymous asked:

Not strictly about ao3 but more about fandom in general. Sometimes idk what my place is. I don't really have anything to offer. I'm no writer, I have no talent for drawing, and I'm often too shy to interact on tumblr (even on anon). I'm just a reader. I try to comment, but most of the time, my brain just freeze in front of the comment box, and I end up writing the most basic things or nothing at all. Idk,I feel like the uninvited guest at a birthday party, like I have no right to eat the cake :(

*hugs* You’re completely welcome at any party I throw, anon!

Fandom is a community made of a lot of different kinds of people. Some people write. Others make art. Still others run events or organize fans during social media campaigns. But all of those people you see doing all kinds of stuff? They’re the visible minority. There are many, many more fans who read or watch or vote or kudos or like or scroll without actually reaching out and talking to anyone else. Those people are just as important.

If everyone wrote fic, who would be left to read it? If everyone made art, we’d never have time to see it all. If everyone made gifs or vids of playlists, there’d be so many people making things that only a few people would actually enjoy them.

I love to bake, but I don’t make cakes just for me. I make them to share. And I don’t expect someone to pay me for it or make me one in return or write up a Yelp review of my party. I just want you to come over and have fun and leave with a smile on your face. Even if you just wave on your way out the door, I’ll know I did a good job.

You’re offering your time, anon. And you’re offering your attention. In a busy world with a lot going on, those are two very valuable things. There’s room for you in fandom, too, and I’m not the only one who’s glad you’re here ❤

fanworks aren’t “content.” they’re pieces of joy and wonder.

content is a placeholder word used by social media sites to talk about the pieces of flotsam and jetsam that keep people using the site so they can be advertised to.

I want to get back to talking about stories and paintings and videos. talk about the art that people are creating, fueled by their passions and interests.

when I write a post, I’m not “creating content.” I’m not filling a box for other people to to “engage” with. I’m sharing a thought for other people to consider. they can agree or disagree with it. they can share it or ignore it as they see fit.

“content creator” is a generic term created by corporations to describe a vast and multi-faceted group of people by the thing they do to benefit the corporation.

“consumer” is a generic term created by corporations to describe a vast and multi-faceted group of people by the thing they do to benefit the corporation.

“engagement” is a metric that corporations use to determine whether a “content creator” is “consumed” enough to be worth running ads next to.

I want fandom to be full of writers and artists and fans, and I want the focus to be on joy and creation and celebrating each other. fandom isn’t a business. it’s a community.

Excellent question in the notes about what we should call people instead. Personally, I just call people “fan” - it’s what we all are, no matter how we express it.

Some fans write. Other fans draw or paint. Still others create playlists or moodboards or cosplays or gifs or RP threads. A rare few even organize cons or create and maintain websites or servers. And many enjoy the things that others do without creating things themselves.

Instead of having separate terms that divide us up into categories, I like thinking of us as a collective. A community, like I said above. Because the thing is, your role changes throughout your time in fandom (as a general concept) and in different fandoms (connected to different canons)

I’ve been a writer, an artist, a podficcer, and volunteer. I’ve also been a lurker, a reader, a commenter and reblogger. Throughout all of those different things that I did, I was a fan. Just like I’m a person first and a professional second.

I’m valuable because I exist, not because of what I can contribute. I belong because I want to be part of a community, not because of what I do within that community.

any time I see someone talking about “real fans” or “real writers” (or “real” anything, for that matter), all I hear is someone trying to keep people out of the group

who made them the arbiter of what is and isn’t real? how can they possibly gauge my interest, my ability, or anything else about me based on a few paltry facts they’ve scraped together based solely on their own experience?

why does the way I engage in fandom or writing or living my life matter to them so much that they feel the need to shut a door in my face? how does diversifying their group make that group anything but a more interesting place to be?

if you tell me you’re a fan, then you’re a fan. if you tell me you’re a writer, then you’re a writer. tell me who you are, and I’m going to believe you. you’re the one who knows best after all. ❤
