Spread this around; remind the world that for every Nazi, there’s an entire train full of sensible people capable of basic moral behaviour.

i notice when y’all reblog my posts abt the grief and fear jews in the diaspora are experiencing right now, and then two minutes later reblog from people who have called jews “whiny entitled brooklynites who need a taste of their own medicine.” it’s been three weeks. i am no longer giving any of y’all the benefit of the doubt that you simply haven’t seen any of these posts from the people you follow. i don’t care if you’ve been following me for years or if we’re mutuals, if i see you reblogging from people who have been extremely vocally antisemitic these past few weeks, i am blocking you on sight.

something that's fucked me up over the last three weeks is the constant barrage of non palestinian goyim saying "why should we have to condemn hamas???????? why do we have to focus on jews or israelis when palestinians are dying??????????" and i know ppl who have already decided i'm guilty by virtue of being a jew won't give a shit, but i'm hoping people who still have a bit of humanity left in them will.

i've gotten so many anons chiding me and demanding to know why they should give a shit about the people killed by hamas (not all of whom were jewish or even israeli), and the answer i keep wanting to give is that. honestly you don't fucking have to. quite honestly, i wouldn't have cared if no one talked about it. i would be hurt to see people didn't see the loss of (assumed to be jewish) life as a tragedy, but i would have much preferred silence to the utterly horrific things i have had to see over the past three weeks.

bc that's the thing. we as jews are so fucking jaded when it comes to gentile reactions to violence against us. we're used to you saying it doesn't matter or even that we deserved it. gentile apathy has so thoroughly broken us that we consider it a win when y'all don't actively celebrate instances of antisemitism. and you had the opportunity to disrupt that pattern, to either take a single moment to offer condolences for the loss of so many lives (not all of whom were jewish or even israeli) or just simply back off and give us space to grieve.

but instead, i witnessed people, who just over a month ago had been wishing their jewish followers a happy rosh hashanah, post or repost some of the most appalling displays of antisemitism i have seen since may of 2021. i have watched you post about the "zionist media" ("jews control the media"), tell jewish israelis to just use their dual citizenship to go back to their third beach house on long island ("all jews are rich"), that jews israelis are bloodthirsty monsters who get pleasure from killing children (modern day blood libel), that jews are the "new nazis" (holocaust inversion), that jews in the diaspora are responsible for the actions of the israeli government (dual loyalty), and that every single israeli should die (literally genocide???????????)

i witnessed people who call themselves antizionist gleefully become tools of political zionism, bolstering the claims that the diaspora is not safe for us and therefore we must support israel when the countries we currently live in turn on us like they have without fail for the last 2000 years. and when i point this out, instead of taking this to heart, people double down. they insist if i'm pointing this out it must mean i believe it.

you all had the opportunity to do nothing, to prioritize the safety and liberation of palestinians over your own hatred of jews, and yet you still chose antisemitism. and i will never forgive you for it.

When someone is a Christian they are not constantly asked their position on the holocaust, the transatlantic slave trade, the extermination of Native Americans or any of the thousands of atrocities committed by Christians. So why do Muslims get asked about terrorism and Jews about Israel and are grouped in with specific bad people while Christians are not required to explain themselves.

Now, there’s a thought.

A non-exhaustive list of systemic and institutional white supremacist dog-whistle euphemisms for Jews and other phraseology that is antisemitic (99.9% of the time) in and of itself (there will be contexts in which some of the following would not be antisemitic, but in general, err on on the side of “That’s Jew hate!”):

  • Swastika graffiti
  • Elites
  • Liberals
  • The liberal agenda
  • The media
  • The liberal media
  • Hollywood
  • The bankers
  • Rothschild
  • The Deep State
  • Neo-liberal/neo-conservative
  • Globalists
  • Internationalists
  • (Jewish) octopus
  • Communists
  • Socialists
  • Cultural Marxists
  • America First
  • George Soros being behind/paying for anything
  • The Koch brothers being behind/paying for anything (I’m sure I’m going to get blowback for this)
  • New Yorkers (or New York as an adjective, see Roy Moore’s description of Gloria Allred as “New York lawyer” even though she was not born, raised, or lives in NY)
  • “Jews aren’t the only semites [sic]! It’s racist for Jews to claim antisemitism as only anti -Jewish bigotry!”
  • white genocide, perpetrators of
  • multiculturalism, forcing of
  • Calling any Jewish person a white supremacist (this is not the same as calling a Jewish person racist nor is this saying that you can’t criticize a racist Jewish person or a Jewish person upholding white supremacy)
  • “I’m not talking about Jews, I’m just talking about white Jews.” (If you’re referring to white privilege that white-skinned individuals have then you don’t need to include or discuss their Jewishness. Including their Jewishness shows that you aren’t referring to white privilege, you’re just antisemitic.)
  • “They’re playing the Holocaust card.”
  • “False accusations of antisemitism keep us from discussing actual real antisemitism.” (Read: I don’t like being accused of antisemitism, so I’m going to gaslight and practice whataboutism.”)
  • Zionist occupation government
  • Zionist hoax (this is usually, but not always, in reference to the Holocaust)
  • Zionazi
  • Jews/Israelis/Zionists are the new Nazis
  • Jews didn’t learn anything from the Nazis/the Holocaust
  • Zionists/Israel oppress Mizrahim and the Beta Israel. (Israeli Mizrahim and Beta Israel are Zionists, sometimes much more hardcore than Israeli Ashkenazim, so this accusation makes no sense. This is not and should not be read as a denial of orientalism, intra-Jewish tribalism/bigotry/racism.)
  • Following up something a Jewish person says about antisemitism with “but what about Palestine?”
  • Dual loyalty/it’s because of Israel/Jews are not loyal citizens
  • Being blamed for the Holocaust/antisemitism (“I’m just saying there must be a reason Jews have been thrown out of every country.” There is a reason: antisemitism.)
  • Being blamed for the Holocaust being commemorated, studied, and remembered.
  • Israel being held as an example of white supremacy (note this is not the same as being critical of Israeli policy or arguing against Palestinian self-determination or statehood.)
  • Jews poisoning the water or food supply (yes, this includes Israeli Jews).
  • Any form of the following (None of the following states or should be read to state that Palestinians, and other peoples indigenous to the same land, aren’t indigenous to the same land.):
  • Jews aren’t indigenous to the land the modern of state of Israel encompasses.
  • Jews aren’t actually Levantine.
  • Ashkenazi Jews aren’t actually Levantine.
  • Ashkenazi Jews are really just European.
  • Ashkenazim/Beta Israel/Kaifeng Jews etc. are not real Jews, they’re just converts.
  • The Khazar theory.
  • Any Jewish sub-ethnicity is really only indigenous to the land in which they had their ethnogenesis in the diaspora after the the world expulsion and not to the land the modern of state of Israel encompasses.
  • They aren’t the real Jews.
  • They are the real Jews.
  • Speaking over Jews to define our identity in general.
  • I just want to remind people that the Koch brothers are not actually Jewish, but that doesn’t stop people from using them as an antisemitic dog-whistle
  • Also the Lizard People conspiracy theory was created by David Icke, an all around antisemite and Holocaust denier, to be about Jews.
  • Calling any Jewish person a lizard or alien or non-human is antisemitic and is often used as a dog-whistle.
  • Also some people confuse Beta Israel with Hebrew Israelites. Beta Israel are Jews who come from Ethiopia. Hebrew Israelites are not Jews, but rather are a messianic group i.e xtian and they claim that they are the “real” Jews that the rest of us are liars. Please do not confuse to the two.
  • ZOG is often used it is shorthand for Zionist Occupation Government which is the conspiracy theory that Jews secretly run the world.
  • I’ve also been seeing a lot of memes lately making fun flat-earth movement and I would like to remind people that the flat-earth movement is antisemitic since people don’t talk about it. They believe that Jews for reasons are hiding the fact that the world is actually flat.

In the interest of being completely honest, I always thought the Koch brothers were Jewish and never thought to confirm that. I think I,-a person who proudly and routinely screams “HEY YOU KNOW THEY’RE JEWISH!” about every single Jewish person on earth-in and of itself confirms @fromchaostocosmos’s point.

what’s….infuriating/validating is that every time someone tries to go “you need to care MORE about OTHER genocides!!!!” and then lists the ones they mean, those are almost always studied, written about, and monitored by Jewish people.

I know that the Armenian genocide was written about by Jewish people. I know someone who works on genocide and human rights monitoring - she’s Jewish. I know that when people tell me to go read King Leopold’s Ghost: A Story of Greed, Terror and Heroism in Colonial Africa to learn more about the genocide in the congo - that that author is Jewish.

I know that the current president of Genocide Watch is an Associate Professor of Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Stockton University. Her dissertation was about Germany and Africa. Read her bio - I have no idea if she’s Jewish but I know she teaches about the Holocaust and that has yet to prevent her active work for Genocide Watch. I also know that the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum runs the Simon-Skjodt Center for the Prevention of Genocide and the Ferencz International Justice Initiative.

I know that the term genocide was coined by a Jewish man.

so like, trust me when I say, Jewish people are paying attention to genocides other than their own. All the time! You do not have to warn people off of studying the holocaust too much on Yom HaShoah, or imply it might be “eclipsing the importance of other genocides” or any of these other things, because not only is that not true when it comes to literally every Jewish person I know, but also I believe you are smarter than that, and can comprehend two things at once without having to directly compare them.

Hi! I've seen people send asks about Judaism to your blog, and I have a question for you, if you're okay with that: How do you (and the Jewish community in general, if you can answer that) feel about Christians celebrating their own version of passover?

Avatar

Hi there!

Thank you so much for your thoughtful question.

My name is Josh (he/him/his) and I’m a student rabbi living in NYC.

I and – to the best of my knowledge– most Jews feel that it is abhorrent for Christians to celebrate their own version of Passover.  I firmly believe that it is not only an act of appropriation (Passover is a Jewish holiday developed over the past 3000+ years, the past 2000+ through a rabbinic lens) but it is also an act of antisemitism.  Historically Passover (i.e. Easter time) is a time where Christians created antisemitic lies that sought to hurt Jews.  The blood libel is the particular lie that I am referring to here.  (But there are many others)

I’ve noticed that several well-meaning Christians attempt to Christianize Jewish holidays and traditions and making them all about Jesus.  Sadly, ignorance creates a rather dark shadow in which several people forget history and try to rewrite a tradition that is not their own, in a way that truly scares me and other Jews half to death.

Passover is a holiday that celebrates Jewish freedom against tyranny, against slavery and persecution.  It celebrates life and light, tradition and bravery, heroism and justice.   Appropriating Passover as a non-Jew not only appropriates someone else’s holiday, but it spits in the face of all of the reasons why we celebrate Passover– especially as a Christian who is a part of a system who has historically oppressed and hurt the Jewish People.

We are living in a time where Jews are being murdered in their synagogues.  We are living in a time where Jews are being hurt in the streets to which they live.  We are living in a time where Jews are being questioned about their politics on Israel to determine if they are a “good Jew” or a “bad Jew.”  We are living in a time where white nationalism is rising in the United States and around the world.  We are living at a time where people are continuing to try and erase the identity of Jews and the Jewish People- and that’s exactly what appropriating Easter does.  This goes for folks who wish to celebrate it without elements of Christian tradition, as well as for folks who wish to celebrate it with elements from Christian tradition.  A non-Jew celebrating a Jewish holiday the ‘right way’ is still appropriation, unless said non-Jew is working to convert to Judaism and join their Jewish family in the celebration of their freedom as well.

So, what do you do if you’re a Christian and you’d like to celebrate Passover?  Unless you are invited to a Passover seder by your Jewish friend, do not celebrate Passover.  Unless you are the spouse, parent, child, best friend, or other close person to a Jew helping to support their Jewish loved one(s)’ celebration of Passover, just don’t do it.    It’s not cool, it’s not appropriate, and will only hurt your Jewish friends (and family).  The same goes for celebrating every other Jewish holiday, festival, or doing Jewish rituals.

I will be one of the first people to invite non-Jewish friends or family to Jewish events.  On the same token, I love to be invited to Christian, Muslim, and events for other faith traditions.  I think interfaith discussion is one of the most important keys to our futures as human being.  But that said, inviting someone into your home and into your tradition is different than borrowing their home or tradition.

Thank you again for your really thoughtful question.  I hope that you are having a lovely evening!

Anonymous asked:

hi, i'm sorry if this has been asked but in your powerpoint you said that the tumblr sj community is guilty of antisemitism. what kind of things has it done? also, i love your blog!

I’ll take this one since I’m the blog’s resident Jew.  Oy vey, where do I start…

  • SJ community loves to police Jewish identity and silence actual Jews when they talk about their own identities.  This usually happens in context of either “Are Jews White?” or “Jewishness is just a religion” conversations.  In reality, Jews are an ethnoreligious group that ethnically originated in the middle east, and while some ethnic Jews have light skin, it’s actually due to centuries of forced assimilation in European and Slavic countries through rape, which is a big reason why Jewishness is matrilineal.  Furthermore, there exist Jews who do not look white at all.  There are black, brown, and asian Jews who are all ethnically Jewish, and these conversations erase them.
  • “Jewish privilege”.  Fact: It’s not a thing.  It’s actually a very common anti-semitic trope that says that Jews run everything so they are not oppressed.  Jews are oppressed, and face anti-semitic violence.
  • “Anti-semitism is not just about Jews, there are other semitic people.” While yea, there are other semitic people, the term “anti-semitism” was created by Germans in the 19th century to refer specifically to the hatred of Jews because it sounded more scientific.
  • Blaming anti-semitic violence in Europe on the actions of Israel.  I see this literally every single day on this site, and it’s very upsetting.  Jews that live in the diaspora are not responsible for Israel’s actions, and especially should not be suffering at the hands of white people in Europe under the guise of anti-zionism.
  • Finally, and this is a big pet peeve of mine.  The only people I ever see reblogging posts about anti-semitism are other Jews.  Even a lot of my non-Jewish followers will reblog posts about racism, sexism, homophobia, etc. but ignore posts about anti-semitism, and that as a Jew makes me feel unsafe.

That’s enough for now.  If you’re interested in learning more about Jewish identity and anti-semitism, you are welcome to check out my personal blog: yochevedke.  I discuss that stuff a lot.

One of the most psychologically-demanding things with antisemitism is that you’re constantly being gaslit about it.  Antisemitism is EVERYWHERE. It never stops, and it comes from all angles and all sides of the political spectrum. There are so many different ways to be antisemitic and only a handful are widely recognized, usually only the most egregious and obvious examples. Jewish issues are often left out of activism, intersectionality is ignored and acts of more casual antisemitism are not taken seriously or considered worth addressing. People still have this idea that Jewish activism is somehow in competition with other activism and must be pushed to the side, or put directly at odds with another group in order to paint Jewish people as the bad guys and avoid anything they might have to say.

As a result, Jewish people in activist spaces CONSTANTLY have to juggle their identity, deciding whether or not identifying as Jewish will help or hurt them in a situation, praying they’re heard and taken seriously, or if they will be subjected to a gauntlet of tests to decide if their voice is “valid” enough to be counted. Even (and especially) on Jewish issues. When casual antisemitism happens, Jewish people have nowhere to turn because the ones moderating the space or keeping order don’t see it or take it seriously, or are the ones perpetuating it themselves. Welcoming spaces become hostile overnight. It’s like getting hit with tons of teeny tiny pebbles every single day, and then occasionally you’re hit with a rock. You tell somebody about the rock, but they don’t see it because it wasn’t a boulder. You’re told you’re being oversensitive, that it didn’t happen, that you’re selfish for complaining about the rock. You know better than to even mention the onslaught of pebbles at this point because you’ll get laughed out of the room.

I think I’m going to take a break from the internet for a little while.
