please respect people who are mentally ill and disabled who cannot work. please respect people who look like they’re just relaxing all day when really they’re waging an internal war just to stay alive or fight their pain. please respect people who could not finish school, people who had big plans and could not see them through because of disability. people who look from the outside like they’ve “given up” or “aren’t doing anything.” people who are hospitalized repeatedly or permanently, and people who are grown adults who are still dependent on others. please respect disabled and mentally ill people.

this is not a polite suggestion, by the way. it’s an angry demand. we are people, and we deserve the same respect as anyone else.

artists and writers please reject thinking you need to regularly create ‘content’ (unless you have a patreon or something, and even then, not fully…) content is a business term for social media. content isn’t the reason you began making your art. you may burn yourself out thinking you need to regularly create and share what you create and capture the moment with your art for maximum engagement from others. that is not a sustainable way to create. value the creative underground growth period and honour the time it takes to bring something into being with carefulness and thought as to what you are expressing

what i really don’t get about older generations shitting on online friendships is that they seem to forget that before the internet, people used to have pen pals. they put up ads in a newspaper seeking people who shared their interests they could exchange letters with. and often they wrote to each other for years, even decades. maybe they never met but they still considered each other friends, someone they could talk to, someone they could trust.

today’s online friendships are practically the same, except we don’t have to wait for weeks/months for a reply anymore.

idk who needs to hear this but,,,every piece of fandom content you make should be self indulgent. you should be creating because it gives you happiness and nothing less. you aren't a machine meant to only give to other people. the enjoyment should always come before the validation.

You are not superior to the person who can’t manage a job or an education. You are not superior to the person who is intellectually and/or cognitively disabled. You are not superior to the people in psych wards and group homes. You are not superior to the person in the wheelchair. You are not superior to the person on disability benefits. You are not inherently superior to any of these people just by virtue of being more capable in comparison. Leave your ableism at the door or don’t enter

Tumblr interaction and entitlement

Recently, I didn’t reply to someone who had messaged me on Tumblr and this person reacted by blocking me, so that when I found time to answer the message, I had typed up my reply, and, obviously, couldn’t send it. I thought, well, that’s kind of a petty response to someone not answering right away (never mind that it would be sometimes days or weeks before I answer people’s messages on other forums, and they would be cool with it). I thought about this, and I thought about mentioning it, and the reason I’ve decided to talk about it is because it goes back to perceptions about interaction with others that we all need to be mindful of.

If someone sends me a message that I don’t answer right away or don’t answer at all it’s because:

  • I’m busy - I have a life that’s not Tumblr and that takes precedence.
  • I’m thinking of what to say - I sometimes need to do that. Thoughts aren’t always completely formed in my head, and I don’t write without thinking.
  • I’m not emotionally capable of responding - I’m upset about the thing you’re asking me about or I’m processing, so I can’t talk right now.
  • I don’t want to talk - everyone should be allowed to be silent if they feel like it.
  • I don’t have any more to say - if all I’m going to do is repeat myself, or if the conversation has come to a natural end, then I’m not going to say any more.
  • Tumblr got hungry and ate your message - which means I didn’t get it, which means I obviously couldn’t reply.

But, what all this really comes down to is this: no one is entitled to my attention. Message me by all means, but no one has an automatic right to my time or my emotional reassurance, even if I’ve provided it before. I’m a nice person: I like to talk to people and be reassuring and positive, but I am not a bottomless well of understanding and reassurance. I’m someone who needs time to process my own feelings and replenish my own stock of positivity, particularly when I’m upset about something. We are all entitled to make ourselves available to anyone or no one as we see fit.

So, anyone who feels like they’re entitled to my time or yours, and who gets petty or upset when they don’t get it, is not someone I or you need in our lives anyway. Respect yourself and your emotions and your time, and forget about anyone who can’t accept that.

Reminder that fanfic as a whole humanizes queer relationships more than almost any other form of storytelling out there, and it is not dirty or inherently fetishizing to enjoy it✌🏼

Additional reminder that fanfic has been a gateway for literally thousands of people to realize and explore their own sexuality in a place that is safer and more understanding than most offline spaces. It has allowed people to realize they are trans, ace, gay, not gay, pan, bi, demi, nonbinary. It has been a place of support for queer people since before a good percentage of fandom was born. And saying who gets to enjoy what part of fandom in which way is completely antithetical to the whole point of fanfic.

Neopronouns are not a “tumblr fad”. Gender neutral pronouns other than they/them have existed in the English language for actual centuries. They are not harmful to the trans community.

To those who are against neopronouns, you’re acting against the evolution of a language and acting against something that’s been around for far longer than you’ve been alive.

To those who use neopronouns, your pronouns are not harmful. You do not deserve to be made to feel ashamed for your pronouns.

Op you can’t just drop this and expect us to not ask what the old school gender neutral pronouns were!!! How on earth are all my nb friends gonna pick the dapper pronouns????

I found these doing VERY minimal research:

•Ey/Em/Eir (1975, created by Christine M. Elverson)

•E/Em/Es (1890, created by James Rogers)

•Per/Pers/Perself (1976, Used in a novel by Marge Piercy)

•Thon/Thos/Thonself (1858, Created by Charles Crozat Converse)

•Ve dates back to 1980

•Xe dates back to 1973

•In 1789, William Marshall confirmed the use of both“a” and “ou” as a replacement for he/she/they and even i.

•Co/Coself (1970, created by Mary Orovan)

•Ne (1850, appeared in print in 1884)

•En (1868, mentioned by Richard Grant White)

•Han/Hans/Hanself (1868)

•Un/Uns/One (1868)

•Se/Sis/Sim (1884)

•Hesh/Hiser/Himer (1879)

•Hi/Hes/Hem (1884)

•Le/Lis/Lim (1884)

•Hersh/Herm (1884)

•Ip/Ips (1884)

•Hae/Haes(Hais)/Haim (1884)

•Tha/Thare/Them(Thon) (1885)

•Zyhe/Zyhe’s/Zyhem (1885)

•Ir/Iro/Im (1888)

•De/Der/Dem (1888)

•Hor/Hors/Horself (1890)

•Ith/Iths (1890)

Sources for these as well as many others that I didn’t add due to the list getting too long can be found here.

An interesting note is that in the modern language a lot more people use neopronouns then you would expect!

•Yo is a majorly African American pronoun coined in 2004 and used by Middle School students In Baltimore, Maryland.

•Fae/Faer, coined in 2014, is used by 4.3% of participants in the 2019 Gender Census.

Plus a vast variety of newly coined pronouns that you will have seen commonly floating around!

Neopronouns have existed and been recorded for a long time, they are not a new concept, nor are they mogai or a tumblr concept. They are not modern, there have just been many modern adaptions to already existing pronouns.

If you see an alarming post, please make sure it is true before you reblog.

  • Check sources. Are there any external reputable sources? Has the OP deleted their post since publishing it? Are there asks on the OP’s tumblr providing truth against their post? Have they provided further info?
  • Google it. Confirm that it exists outside of tumblr, and on reputable sources. Check snopes.
  • Check the notes. Chances are, if it’s fake or misleading people have already commented or reblogged with facts proving so or providing more context. Clicking and scrolling through the notes for a bit is one of the easiest things you can do before reblogging.

We’re in terrifying times but lets make sure we’re mad at and taking action against the right things, and not sensationalist bullshit made to distract us or make ad money off of our fear.

reminder @ queer folks that you don’t have to disclose why you identify as queer to anyone if you don’t want to, especially when it’s clear the person asking you is doing so in bad faith. you are not obligated to give out every detail of your gender identity or orientation to some stranger so that they can decide whether you have the ‘right’ to call yourself queer or not. 🌈🦄

i find so many ‘callouts’ about how people headcanon fictional characters to be extremely suspect tbh

what i’m talking about is this: people getting called out for headcanoning certain characters as being autistic are mostly autistic themselves, people getting called out for headcanoning characters of color as being a-spec are mostly a-spec poc, people getting called out for headcanoning certain characters as being mentally ill are mostly mentally ill people, people getting called out for headcanoning certain characters as being abuse survivors are also abuse survivors, etc etc etc

i swear that 90% of the time i see people going off over “headcanoning this character as being ___ is Problematic!” it’s people who are also ___ who are making those headcanons and getting the brunt of the anger about it and meanwhile it’s mostly people who are NOT ___ who are making the callouts against them, and the reasoning the people doing the calling out use for why these headcanons are “problematic” almost always comes down to either bigotry, gatekeeping, or respectability politics.

but like…people who are part of marginalized groups, who are mentally ill or neurodivergent, who are abuse survivors, who are whatever—people are allowed to headcanon characters as being like them. people are allowed to see parts of themselves and their lives in fictional characters. that imo is not “problematic” but telling them that they can’t, that they’re wrong, that seeing a piece of their identity or background in a character makes THEM bad is.
