Notice how he was looking at her for just a little bit longer before he looked at the stars. He loved her soooo much... He finally found a person he could trust and spend time with, someone who wasn't afraid of him and loved him not for his powers but because of his good heart. And then he lost her.
One of the sweetest things in the movie is when Tom and Maddie are bored af without their kids and they try new hobbies to keep themselves occupied and they make Tom a sweater decorated with his nickname "Donut Lord" (the nickname that Sonic first gave him) and donuts all over it. Even when they're trying to do something other than spending time with their kids they keep thinking about them. I love how this movie confirmed that Tom and Maddie love their little alien kids so much and, even though they were a happy couple before they adopted them, they're even happier now. They can't imagine their lives without them anymore.
Sonic thinks that Robotnik would've been a better person if he had a family and he felt sorry for Shadow when he found out about Maria cuz Sonic has the best parents ever who love him and taught him how to be a good guy and a hero so he knows that family plays a big part in a person's life
But look how confused he is by Maria's dancing. He has probably never seen anyone dance before and he doesn't understand what she's doing. He trusts her but he doesn't understand what's going on.

Gerald let Maria and Shadow spend time together. He saw that Shadow won't hurt her and he let them be friends. This is so important. He called them "kids" and also when he says "they want to take Shadow away from us" - he cared about Shadow too and realized that he is just a kid just like his granddaughter. Gerald was definitely a good grandpa and a good guy before Maria got killed.
They animated the aftermath of the explosion in Sonic's eyes 😭😭😭😭
This transition from a happy family to a love tragedy is destroying me 😭😭😭😭
This has to be one of the most heartbreaking moments in the whole trilogy. When he separated his hands like that after a beloved family member broke his heart... It's so weird to see Robotnik like this. He's always either crazy or goofy, he's rarely serious, but in this movie where he truly experiences heartbreak it made me feel so bad for him because he just wanted to be loved but he trusted the wrong person. He was speechless and for the first time he didn't know how to react. You can tell how much it hurts him to find out that he means nothing to someone he loves.
Robotnik always wanted a family but his family didn't want him. He found out how much it hurts and how much he was hurting Stone the whole time. He realized how much Stone actually loved him because Stone would never say something like "you're no Maria" to him.
(And Jim Carrey is insanely talented for this, I have to give him credit, cuz during this movie he made me laugh a lot and he also made me cry even more.)
The way Knuckles immediately steps in between Sonic and Tails when he sees that Sonic is angry and Knuckles defends Tails.
I don't think that Sonic would hurt Tails and I don't think that Knuckles thought so but I love the way he is triggered by Sonic's behaviour and he immediately decided to defend their little brother while being gentle with Sonic at the same time. I know I already made posts about how amazing Knuckles was in this movie being such a good big brother to these two but I always keep finding more moments where he's showing just how much he cares about his whole family.
