Wiccan Life Rituals

There is more to Wicca than just Sabbats and Esbats. The rituals we practice are beautiful and complex, and very symbolic. 

I present here the Life rituals that Wiccans, both Traditional and Solitary/Eclectic, perform for their members. 

*Here the terms Wiccan and Witch are used interchangably as many Wiccans refer to themselves as Witches. Please note however that you do not have to be Wiccan to be a Witch, Witchcraft is a practice that does not require religious belief or adherence.*

Wiccaning

  • A Wiccan baptism, more or less;
  • a ritual performed on infants and pre-pubescent children, bringing them under the protection of the God & Goddess.
  • Can also be a time the child is given his/her first Magical name.
  • Child also receives Godparents at this time

Child’s Rite of Passage

  • Acknowledgement of a certain age/phase in a young person’s life
  • Rituals can be performed to commemorate entering puberty, reaching adulthood, completing goals, etc.
  • Often the child is given their first working tools at various stages of development.
  • If appropriate, child is allowed to choose their own magical name

Rite of Passage

  • similar to the child’s rite
  • it is performed for a person who has been raised in Wicca, reached the legal age of majority, and has no calling to initiation.
  • the recognition of full adult status in the community 
  • request for the blessings of the Goddess and God on them as they travel their chosen path. 

Dedications/Initiations

  • A ritual to mark the dedication of a new Wiccan; or the transition to higher knowledge for established Wiccans
  • Can be done solitary, or within a coven. (depending on branch of Wicca)

Handfasting

  • A trial marriage ceremony.
  • literally the binding of hands, resembling the binding of body and soul.
  • Traditionally done for A year and one day. After this time the couple/family can choose to marry for life, or end the relationship.
  • Handfastings can be performed at the end of each year and a day until the couple/family is decided on if they want to bond for life.
  • In more modern days it is a legal wedding ceremony binding the couple or family for life.

Handparting

  • A lesser known ritual
  • Sort of a Wiccan Divorce ceremony
  • formal separation of a couple that has previously been handfasted
  • Allows the couple to part as friends on equal footing.  

The Great Rite

  • A sacred union; sexual.
  • Performed within a circle, where one person (typically the more masculine individual in the relationship) takes the God into his/her body, and the other person (typically the more feminine in the relationship) takes the Goddess into her/his body.
  • Can be done with same-sex as well as opposite-sex couples.

Croning

  • A ritual to mark a female witch’s change from Mother to Crone.
  • The Crone takes this opportunity to step back from leadership and allows someone else to take over leadership of a coven if in one.
  • Typically occurs with females over age 60

Saging

  • A ritual to mark a Male Witch’s change from Father to Sage
  • The Sage takes this opportunity to step back from leadership and allows someone else to take over leadership of a coven if in one.
  • Typically occurs with men over age 60

Death Rite/ Releasing

  • Can also be done as last rites for a dying individual.
  • A ritual to mark the passing of a witch.
  • Done after a funeral to help aid the spirit of the witch to Summerland/afterlife

Ritual Do's and Don'ts

I was digging through an old blog of mine and I found this great little list about ritual writing buried away. I wrote this back in 2012 and all this information still holds true to my practice. 

I encourage you to add to this list!!! DO research your topic BEFORE you set pen to paper. Take notes from the books you read! DON'T use a pen for the first draft....Trust me. Pencils will make your life so much easier DO ask others for their opinions or insights into your ritual, find out what they think of when they hear "Full Moon Rite or Lughnasadh" this will help overcome any kind of writers block DON'T copy word for word from another person's ritual, this is plagiarism, and kinda shady...Plus, it won't have the same amount of power and energy in it as something you write yourself. DO take your time writing it. DO ask the Divine to assist you should you not know where to start. DON'T get discouraged DON'T fret about things over and over, once it is written, let it live for a moment. If it turns out it just doesn't have the right vibrations, then you can change it. DON'T fret over perfection, let things happen as they are meant to, when they are meant to.

Hecate?

I am looking for some information on Hecate?

She keeps appearing to me in my dreams and in my waking life as different beings, I feel like she is trying to call out to me. The first few times I thought I was just being silly, but it has been a couple years now of her, or someone similar to her reaching out, but I am afraid to listen. I do not know enough about her, and what very little I do know, or have been told, frightens me, and I do not know enough to converse with her. I tend to be very shy around Deity. I have been searching for a Goddess embrace if you will since I was saved from a terrible decision 5 years ago. I have trust issues in general, There is something about the energy I often get from Her, and Her other followers that I am in contact with, that has filled me with both excitement, and a sense of nerves mixed with a slight essence of terror...I am not sure why.

Thank you in advance for any and all insights given.
