“There is something very wrong with what we have made ourselves. We have become a civilization based on work — not even ‘productive work’ but work as an end and meaning in itself. We have come to believe that men and women who do not work harder than they wish at jobs they do not particularly enjoy are bad people unworthy of love, care, or assistance from their communities. It is as if we have collectively acquiesced to our own enslavement. The main political reaction to our awareness that half the time we are engaged in utterly meaningless or even counterproductive activities — usually under the orders of a person we dislike — is to rankle with resentment over the fact there might be others out there who are not in the same trap. As a result, hatred, resentment, and suspicion have become the glue that holds society together. This is a disastrous state of affairs.”

Today at the conservation non-profit...

There's a conference room across the aisle from my desk and I thought I vaguely heard singing so I took off my headphones.

Sure enough...there's a group of people singing Lorde's "Royals" choral style with harmonies in the conference room right now.

I have no idea why. That's just how we roll around here.

Some days in my life....
[Insert any human here]: What is your job?
Me: Spatial Ecologist
Them: Oh. That sounds interesting. What do you do?
Me: Move numbers around in spreadsheets and make powerpoint presentations, mostly.

Oops. After a series of small disasters I have arrived at my office at 9:30 and learned I had an 8:00 meeting and a 9:00 meeting.

It's been this kind of morning at football house.

We should probably try to get more sleep.

Also this is what I get for trying to leave the house.

Work tasks

Just got an email asking me if I can explain what this document (that I did not write) is trying to say:

Smaller floods allow regeneration. Just scours landscape and creates bare soil for seedlings to restart.
Mixed fire can also and not causing a transition.
Historically, the range of amount in this class might have been 30-40%.

So, I’m over here like...yeah your guess is as good as mine, honestly.

This is fascinating. I’m paid to think about things like this on some level and I’d not read a lot of this research. Really good insight and I’m glad things like this are starting to come out more, as to me they’re commonplace and have been happening for so long it’s sort of a miracle no one has put it out there until now.

Climate change is a wicked beast. Literally destroying lives on the planet. It’s just doing it so slowly that no one’s been able to figure it out since we humans aren’t so good at noticing the subtleties of the world around us most of the time.

I’m not saying we should be worried, but -- yeah, you know what, I’m saying we should be worried. This is reaching (you could argue has reached) crisis point, but since it subtly just feels like life as usual no one realises how bad it really is most of the time.

Fascinating read. I’ve shared it with my colleagues.

I love science

I'm on this call and people are talking about running regression models and someone just said: "I spent about a year trying to figure out what I did wrong, because the fit of this model was too good."

Scientists. We don't believe ourselves, either.

Just had a "let's put timelines on all these projects you're leading" convo with my boss that ended with..."oh, whoops, you're scheduled at 110% until the end of the calendar year *jazz hands*"

Good bye, work-life balance. Sad to see you go just when I needed you the most because I actually have life things again.

Everyone on this call: Let's turn on video!
Me: *Shoveling lunch into my face while sitting around in the clothes she wore to bed*
Me: uhhhhhh

Well. Didn't expect this to be a "this map doesn't exist so I will make it in Photoshop from three other maps" sort of day, but here we are.

It's weird to simultaneously feel frustratingly shit at your job because you cannot find this dataset you need even though other people are using it in reports so you know not only that it exists but allegedly *where* it exists and you still can't find it, but also like you are the best at your job because you are one of only two of your supervisor's direct reports to be on the presenter list for an upcoming all-staff meeting your supervisor just scheduled My day.
