Podficcers

  • Your mission is to record at least 75,000 words in a single podfic/podfic anthology.
  • Individual podficcers may record one podfic or many to meet the minimum word requirement, so long as all podfics can be part of an anthology.
  • Multiple podficcers may collaborate to record one multivoice podfic to meet the minimum word requirement.
  • You may collaborate with other podficcers for the challenge, but we would appreciate it if all co-collaborators signed up here so we have everyone’s contact information in case we need it.
  • You may choose to submit as many 75,000-word projects as you choose, for an added challenge. I know there are overachievers out there…
  • Check ins are mandatory. We want to make sure that you complete your project. Check-ins are all on Saturdays and we will nudge you if you if we haven’t heard from you by the following Monday. Please submit your contact info to THIS google form.
  • You must be approximately 50% complete by the art request deadline to qualify for official art match-ups.
  • Cover art is NOT MANDATORY. We organize match-ups through the community for people who are do not wish to make their own, but if you are not interested in or do not qualify for the official art match-ups, feel free to do what suits you best.
  • For this year, Epic Podfic Big Bang will have the same schedule as Podfic Big Bang.

  • Your mission is to claim the podfic of your choice and create a minimum of one work of cover art.
  • You may claim one podfic the first week after art claims open.
  • You may claim as many additional podfics as you wish after the first week of art claims.

Updated Rules and Timeline for Podfic Big Bang 2018

Just so we’re all on the same page, this post will detail the differences between Podfic Big Bang 2017 and 2018. 1) This year, check-ins will be MANDATORY. The mods want to make sure that you have all the resources you need to finish the challenge, and that means staying updated on your progress. Check-ins are all on Saturdays and we will nudge you if you if we haven’t heard from you by the following Monday. Please leave your info in this Google form if we need to follow up with you. 2) After much deliberation, the mods have decided that Podfic Big Bang and Epic Podfic Big Bang will run concurrently, both posting between October 14 and 31. (This will likely change again next year.) 3) We’ve decided against the THEME aspect of previous rounds. Feel free to choose whatever story appeals to you. 4) We are bringing back beta listeners and cheerleaders! Neither of these are required, but we know that recording 10K, 50K, or more can be exhausting. If you are willing to cheerlead and/or beta listen to someone’s work, sign ups for that will go up in July. 5) Finally, Podfic Big Bang will no longer have a required posting format. We will still provide a posting format for those who want one. However, if you have your own format, please use it! Schedule:

Podficcer Schedule

  • Sign-ups begin: June 3 (ongoing)
  • Check-in #1: July 7
  • Check-in #2: August 4
  • Art requests due: August 17
  • Art claims begin: August 18
  • Check-in #3: September 1
  • Check-in #4: September 29
  • Posting period: October 14-31

Cover Artist Schedule

  • Sign-ups begin: June 3 (ongoing)
  • Art requests open: August 4
  • Art requests due: August 17
  • Art claims begin :August 18
  • Check-in #1: September 1
  • Check-in #2: September 29
  • Posting period: October 14-31

PSA

Hey friends! It’s reverse big bang posting season, which means a lot of people are posting art with the fics they put on AO3. It’s pretty swell! Beautiful art everywhere!

However, many people (like me!) primarily read fic on a mobile device, and art tends to break the screen. It’s much more difficult to see the art if I’m scrolling all over the place, and it makes reading harder when my screen suddenly wants to scroll sideways all the time.

So, if you are posting inline art on AO3, please consider limiting its width! It’s very easy: just add width=“90%” to your image HTML code. Thus:

<img src=“URL” alt=“DESCRIPTION” width=“90%”>

Et voilà! The art will scale down to fit whatever screen it’s being viewed on.

Thanks in advance,

Your friendly neighborhood phone user

Notes:

- the “alt” attribute is technically required. It provides the text that displays if the image doesn’t work, and also (I think) is the first place a screen reader looks for an image description. Please be kind to readers with limited data or vision difficulties and use alt!

- I haven’t played with the number, but probably 100% would also work, or 98 or 95. 90 just gives you a nice cushion. Feel free to experiment!

- You can always include a link to the full hi-res version so people can see fine detail!

- further info on how to make links here

- Tumblr formatted the double quotation marks as smart quotes (ie, open/close quotes). SMART QUOTES BREAK CODE. If your code isn’t working after copying from here that’s probably why.

As @notlucy points out here, you can do this with CSS as well! CSS is great, more flexible, and generally preferred to HTML for granular adjustments, and if you have multiple images it is way easier to just set all images to max width 100% than to have to remember to do it in every image tag. AO3 has a tutorial on custom style sheets for works that also has links to more resources.

[Podfic Meta] Thoughts on Podfic Cover Art and the Unnecessary Barriers to Podficcing

For the audio version of the post below, please click HERE.

Thanks must go to @howsareeasy and @analise010 for their invaluable contributions to this post.

This has been crossposted to Dreamwidth and AO3.

Fellow podficcers, from newcomers to those who have been around even longer than me, I have some thoughts to share. There has been some discussion lately about podfic covers and the way that we all say they aren’t expected, yet also rarely post without them--even going out of our way to commission them from others if we don’t have the time/inclination to do them ourselves. I want to empower us all to change this.

My part of this discussion came about while watching someone get into podficcing for the first time. She is a prolific writer and I've recorded many of her fics. She's friends with several podficcers and has embraced the art and championed the cause of transformative works statements amongst other writers. She's undertaken podfic a bit as an academic exercise in that she wanted to try it so she could better understand the process of creating podfic and what goes into it. She's set a goal of a target number of hours of work and a target number of fics to record in order to understand the process and see whether or not podfic is for her. Watching someone undertake podficcing from a scientific perspective and posting detailed notes about what she struggles with along the way has really opened my eyes to all the little things involved in creating podfic that I take for granted. Most of these things have a pretty steep learning curve. Reading about her undertakings, I'm struck by the thought that podfic doesn't have the low barrier to entry that I thought it did.
