Drop the Not! Writer Claims are Now Open

Get excited, fic writers, because not!fic claims for Drop the Not! ARE NOW OPEN!

Here's how it works:

Head over to our AO3 collection any time between now and 11 April and check out the oral not!fics on offer. If you like one, claim it using the button on the AO3 site. You will then have until 16 May to write a minimum of 1k based on or inspired by the not!fic. In some cases, the oral not!fic may be very detailed and follow specific plot lines with specific charactrs, and in some cases the oral not!fic may be more general, similar to the "I wish someone would write me a fic where..." prompts on Tumblr.

Rules are largely the same as last year, with a few adjustments, so please review the rules below before before signing up.

Note that we have added an author check-in at 2.5 weeks into the fic writing period. We will be contacting you with the contact information in your AO3 profiles, so please either fill those out (don't forget to add your transformative works statements!) or send us an email at [email protected] with that info.

We ask that writers clearly honour the spirit of the not!fic to the best of their ability. This means that things like fandom, characters, and setting should be similar. We don't have a say in how writers are inspired or how they take the prompt, and the work an author produces may be very similar or radically different from the not!fic they claimed. That’s part of the joy!

Drop the Not! Submissions Now Open

Hey all, submissions for Drop the Not! ARE NOW OPEN! You will have three weeks (until 4 April) to submit your not!fics, but authors can start claiming them in one week (21 March), so if you've got them ready be sure to submit them early.

For those of you who are new or aren't familiar with the challenge, Drop the Not! is a multi-fandom fanwork challenge where authors create written fanworks that are prompted or inspired by oral not!fic. An oral not!fic is a type of podfic not based on existing text, such as a fic. It is often improvisational or conversational in tone. This challenge follows the idea of reverse big bangs and prompt communities, but puts a unique spin on things. Here's how it works:

Not!fic can be as detailed or general as the creator likes, but we do ask that writers clearly honour the spirit of the not!fic to the best of their ability. This means that things like fandom, characters, and setting should be similar. We don't have a say in how writers are inspired or how they take the prompt, and the work an author produces may be very similar or radically different from the podfic they received. Well... on the downside, I literally spent the hours from midnight to 6am laying in my bed not sleeping.

On the upside... I have now seen most of the scenes in my in-planning fic played out in my brain in full cinematic glory.

I only wish the end result wasn't that I'm now too tired to write any of it.

Self... please either let me stop being so tired I can't function OR stop thinking about this fic so I can just fucking sleep.

This current place where I sit here, exhausted, thinking about how beautiful this fic could be if I were capable of making it into words is some level of hell.

As someone who came up with YET ANOTHER fic idea today instead of working on any of the THREE FICS I HAVE IN PROGRESS, I accept this challenge.

Can some or any of y’all leave prompts over here in this kink meme? I’ve done my best work from kink meme prompts. I’d say 90 percent of my footie RPF fic have been from kink meme prompts.  The thing is though, I tend to use the prompts for plotty stuff, and the kink bits are defanged. I can’t write smut to save my life, so I go for the quirk. The cool things with kink memes, is that I can keep the work 5k or less.

I’ll have to round up the scant number of La Celeste’s supporters for the hand-holding and emotional support.

Don’t you wish that sometimes, someone would write one of your fic ideas? And get the nail on the head on each point you want to make and scene you created in your head? So that you can skip the pain and horrors that comes with writing, editing, proofreading, editing again, and going through final revision hell…and get straight to the joy of just reading the damn thing with the most stupid smile on your face?

I wish this ALL THE TIME.

I have so many ideas that I will probably never get to, but when people ask for the prompt I am like...welllllllll it needs to be EXACTLY LIKE THIS, WHY YES I AM BEING DEMANDING...at which point I may as well resign myself to writing it, really.

But some ideas...some are sacred. Some I would never give away to anyone despite the pain they will drag me through as I get there.

The beauty is, eventually I think we learn "this is not a fic *I* can write, but it is one that should be written". And that is a beautiful moment of releasing the idea into the wilds and hoping the right person gives it wings.

I really hope you (or someone!) can give this fic wings. Trust that I will be there to read it when it is done!

honestly my entire draft writing philosophy is that any time I have an idea that makes me go “haha no I couldn’t do that, that’s ridiculous”, I’m on the right track and I should absolutely do that thing

like tbh most of my best and most creative ideas come from stuff logical me would have shot down immediately. but I tell u what, you never know what actual awesome shit is hiding in those ideas if you juuuuust explore them a little and take them seriously

and even if those ideas don’t go anywhere GOD exploring them just frees up your mind so much and lets you think about things in new perspectives and opens all sorts of possibilities ya know?? it gets those creative muscles…….. doing stuff. u know how lazy they can get, u know how they fall into the same cycles

I’m really excited about this week and am going to participate. I have already made a mental note of making two updates to MFL II, on 18 th (oldest WIP) and 22nd (most popular WIP) days of March. Now I have deadlines to work towards, not too far away but not too soon, and I am really optimistic about actually reaching my goal. I may even take it to heart to churn out something on some other WIP days. Nice!

It also gives a time frame for me to have the hockey rpf fic I’m currently working on out of my hands in a decent time before I have to get ready for that week because I don’t intent to include it in the WIP week works.
