Drop the Not! Author Claims are Still Open

Hey amazing people!

Oral not!fic submissions have officially closed for this year's Drop the Not! but author claims are currently open for another week until 11 April.

This year, we have 12 not!fics submitted as prompts and are waiting for some lovely authors to swing by, claim them, and write a fic inspired by the not!fic that is at least 1000 words in length. Full rules on all that are here, and you can find the not!fics to be claimed at our AO3 collection here.

This year, we have not!fics in the following fandoms, so if you or anyone you know wants to try their hand at writing a fic for said fandoms, this is a great way to get a quick prompt and write something fun !

Drop the Not! Writer Claims are Now Open

Get excited, fic writers, because not!fic claims for Drop the Not! ARE NOW OPEN!

Here's how it works:

Head over to our AO3 collection any time between now and 11 April and check out the oral not!fics on offer. If you like one, claim it using the button on the AO3 site. You will then have until 16 May to write a minimum of 1k based on or inspired by the not!fic. In some cases, the oral not!fic may be very detailed and follow specific plot lines with specific charactrs, and in some cases the oral not!fic may be more general, similar to the "I wish someone would write me a fic where..." prompts on Tumblr.

Rules are largely the same as last year, with a few adjustments, so please review the rules below before before signing up.

Note that we have added an author check-in at 2.5 weeks into the fic writing period. We will be contacting you with the contact information in your AO3 profiles, so please either fill those out (don't forget to add your transformative works statements!) or send us an email at [email protected] with that info.

We ask that writers clearly honour the spirit of the not!fic to the best of their ability. This means that things like fandom, characters, and setting should be similar. We don't have a say in how writers are inspired or how they take the prompt, and the work an author produces may be very similar or radically different from the not!fic they claimed. So here's my new favourite thing happening on Tiktok:

Dutch people are making videos about Dutch culture in the same way Westerners make videos about Asian culture.

Things like:

-using a pink filter

-making traditional food

-mixing Dutch words into their English sentences

I think they're doing this to show how weird westerners treat Asian culture and I think its one of the best things to come out of Tiktok.

How to support podfic & podficcers!

I’ve seen a few “Here’s how to support writers” posts, so here’s one for your friendly neighbourhood podfic people! 

Podfic is more well-known these days, but in case you haven’t come across it: think of it as fan-made audiobooks for fic.

If you like podfic and would like to help the people who make it make more of it, here are a few easy tips and tricks:

In general, the more podfic-positive and responsive a fandom, the more podficcers will be attracted to it. So if you love podfic and would like there to be more… You know what you have to do :p

And if you’re new to the idea of podfic and don’t know where to start: There are more than 22,000 on AO3 right now, in a multitude of fandoms, ratings, lengths, voices and styles. You can usually stream them right on the page, and you can always download them to listen to later. It’s never been easier to have a fluffy ficlet keep you company while you do the dishes or to have someone tell you your favourite AU as a bedtime story.

A nice side effect of putting a blanket statement in your AO3 profile is that occasionally podfic just…happens. Like you’re going about your day and suddenly there is a podfic for u.

I’m happy to see resources for support for podfic, and not to sidetrack this post but I would also love to see more people making use of their AO3 profile. Mine lists where to find me on social media and also gives blanket permission for podfic, translations, and fanart, which allows other fans to create without having to negotiate with me first, which can be a bit intimidating. It also details my policy that I do not allow my work to be included in collections. 

The problem is that not everyone knows to look in profiles because profile use is very limited, so I still get on average about two collection requests a week, and sometimes I get people asking permission to translate or podfic, or contacting me on tumblr to ask about my fanart policy. Which is fine, I don’t mind, but I would love for profiles to just be the standard place people look for that data so they don’t have to worry about reaching out and waiting for a response.
