I just realized Arthur probably thought Gwaine had magic because when he went to get the trident from the fisher king, the guy at the bridge calls him “Courage” and says he needs two other things to complete the quest, one of them being magic and Arthur had already deduced (falsely) that Merlin didn’t have magic earlier in the show so when he knighted Gwaine, Arthur probably thought that he was a sorcerer
