STOP HAVING WHITE VOICE ACTORS PLAYING NON-WHITE ROLES

stop depriving non-white actors opportunities to act and get recognized!

Voice actors often don’t know who they’re reading for or what franchise they’re in (that’s what the strike was recently about, so they’d know whether they were in a small first time game or the 4th installment of a major franchise, if they were replacing a beloved voice actor, etc.) so please don’t harass the actors, until recently they legally didn’t have the right to know who they were reading for and were usually not told until months or even years later.

Definitely go after casting, directors, and studios executives. Those are the people making the decisions.

They still don’t have the right to know. They got fucking nothing out of that strike. They can know the code name (which might be a serial number or whatever) and if it’s a sequel. That’s it. That’s the extent of the “transparency” they won from the strike.

As a perfect example of this controversy, if you haven’t looked up interviews surrounding Laura Bailey as Nadine Ross, it’s worth it.

Laura Bailey herself explained that when she auditioned for the role, she was given no information about what the character looked like. It was only after she was hired and arrived for recording that she was shown concept art and discovered the character was a WOC. She was uncomfortable about the situation.

Meanwhile, Neil Druckmann revealed that they were already working on concept art of the character when they hired Laura Bailey. They finalized the character’s design as a WOC after they’d hired a white voice actress, so that was a conscious decision. He was also very flippant about the situation as a whole.

Like people above have said: Yes, whitewashed casting is a legitimate and real issue. But unlike actors in film and stage, voice actors are often totally blind to what they’re auditioning for. They get fucked by NDAs and legal red tape bullshit. Go after the casting directors and execs and high-position game devs that knowingly make these decisions.

I love that Ubisoft’s response to the racist white man pain mess that was Watch Dogs was by giving WD2 a black male lead. But then when racists got angry, Ubisoft put wearable blm merch in-game, added playable buff female characters and black vikings to For Honor, diversified their roster in Rainbow Six Siege, made their newest Assassin’s Creed games take place in China and Egypt, and made Far Cry 5 be about beating up white supremacists.

Conspiracy Theory: Ubisoft Was Killed And Replaced By A Look Alike

Whatever demons Ubisoft inhabited exited into Bioware.

Yo, I’ve got a really good female friend who works for Ubisoft. Instead of acting like it’s witchcraft that Ubi’s changing it’s tune, you can thank the women and other minorities working inside gaming companies that endure being called names by all of you lot AND being treated like crap by their own coworkers and still keep persistently trying to push for change inside their company.

They work tirelessly despite getting shit from absolutely everyone, gamers, co-workers and internet trolls alike.

THIS IS WHY HIRING DIVERSELY IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS PUTTING DIVERSITY INSIDE THE GAMES

Adapt to this

LET ME JUST POINT OUT THE VARIOUS FLAWS OF LOGIC HERE. FIRST OF ALL DARWINS POWER IS TO LITERALLY ADAPT TO ANYTHING IN THE EFFING UNIVERSE. HIS POWERS DEEMED IT TOO DANGEROUS TO FIGHT THE HULK AND TELEPORTED HIM TO ANOTHER COUNTRY. HE ONCE BECAME PURE COSMIC EFFING ENERGY AND SHORTLY AFTER REMATERIALIZED AS A HUMAN BEING TO PREVENT HIS DEATH. DARWIN IS LITERALLY INEFFINGVINCIBLE. AND YOU MEAN TO TELL ME THAT A PATHETIC BALL OF KINETIC ENERGY FROM SEBASTIAN SHAW MERKS HIM?!?!?! THEY OBVIOUSLY ARE OUT TO KILL THE BLACK MAN IN THE PLOT AND LITERALLY WROTE THIS SCENE WITH NO REGARDS TO DARWINS POWERS WHATSOEVER AND ITS FRUSTRATING THAT THEY WOULD GO OUT OF THEIR WAY TO KILL HIM OFF LIKE THAT

I’m saying. Even in sci fi we ain’t safe

in my headcanon darwin literally became a being of energy and ascended to another plain of existence so he doesn’t have to deal with anymore of this white nonsense

i was SO tight about this bullshit

Years later and I STILL get so mad about this

they killed the one fucking x-man whose power is literally SURVIVAL. That’s his power. He can DO ANYTHING IT TAKES TO SURVIVE! Shaw says “adapt to this??” HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO.

In addition to the above mentioned things he’s survived, when shot with a gun made to kill ANYTHING WITH A NERVOUS SYSTEM, he turned into a SPONGE, and then back again.

Once, he touched a goddess of death. And to survive that, HE BECAME A DAMN DEATH GOD HIMSELF. AND YOU’RE TELLING ME HE CAN’T SURVIVE SOME FUCKING KINETIC ENERGY?? BULLSHIT I SAY. BULL FUCKING SHIT.

Eugene Brave Rock has been travelling the world, chasing his dream of making it big in Hollywood since he was 17.
Now, with a role in the most anticipated movie of the summer, Wonder Woman, Brave Rock is breaking new ground in his career.
He’s also become a hometown hero on the Blood Tribe in southern Alberta, where he was born and raised.
“It’s overwhelming, but it’s great,” said Brave Rock, 39.
“I’m soaking it in. It’s wonderful. I’m so grateful to represent my people, my culture and my language to the rest of the world.”
He plays The Chief in the movie and introduces himself in his native Blackfoot language to Wonder Woman, who is played by actress Gal Gadot.
“It’s unprecedented, especially in a role that has to do with Indians; it’s someone else’s interpretation of Native Americans. [In this business] people are told what to do and how to do it. But I was given so much control,” said Brave Rock.
The 2017 DC Comics superhero film, distributed by Warner Bros., is breaking box-office records. It boasted the biggest-ever opening weekend for a film directed by a woman — Patty Jenkins.
“I’m so thankful to Patty Jenkins for giving me the opportunity,” said Brave Rock.

Watching a super hero movie directed by a woman is like putting glasses on for the first time.

I didn’t realize how much I had to squint through the “male gaze” till suddenly, miraculously, I didn’t have to.

There were absolutely NO eye candy shots of Diana. There were Amazons with ageing skin and crows feet and not ONE of them wore armor that was a glorified corset. When Diana did the superhero landing, her thigh jiggled onscreen.

Did you hear me? HER FUCKING THIGH JIGGLED. Wonder Woman’s thigh jiggled on a 20-foot tall screen in front of everyone.

Because she wasn’t there to make men drool. She wasn’t there to be sexy and alluring and flirt her way to victory, and that means she has big, muscular thighs, and when they absorb the impact of a superhero landing, they jiggle, and.that’s.WONDERFUL.

Thank you, Patty Jenkins, for giving me a movie about a woman, told by a woman,so I can see it through my eyes, not some dude bro who’s there for boobs and butts.

There was a huge push from Asian-Americans to cast an Asian-American actor as Iron Fist, and it would have made this story more compelling for precisely the reasons you’re saying: The narrative of having an Asian-American going back to Asia after losing his parents as a metaphor for regaining power is a really great one. It feels like a missed opportunity. It is a missed opportunity. That’s exactly how I feel about it, word for word. It would’ve been a brave thing to do, for sure, for Marvel. I can see how that was difficult to make that decision. I think, personally, it would’ve paid off. But I think it’ll come next because people are feeling underrepresented. People are like, “Yo, this was a perfect opportunity to represent us.” They chose not to, and it’s not even their fault. I see why they stuck to the source material because it’s very risky to move away from that, but they’ll move away from it in other areas and in other shows where they’ll take an Asian character and make him white. So you can’t really win with that argument. Because we’ve seen many times when they’ve taken Asian characters and made him white.
