ugh fine my personal blog is not cutting so I’ll post here

DO! NOT! DONATE! TO! AMAZON! CONSERVATION! NGOs! DO NOT!

they don’t act on the root of the problem, they don’t mitigate the effects of deforestation, they do have limited action and they don’t help conserve the forest land outside their very small grounds besides doing little to nothing to help the people who actually live in the amazon and conserve it on a daily basis

they are organized, they can keep woodcutting companies away from their land, they are getting murdered for it, they are the only reason there is any forest left at all

THIS is a a fund for indigenous peoples of the Amazon (Brasil only)

THIS is a link to donate from abroad to the indigenous women’s march, it has already happened but you can still donate to support the cause

THIS is a link to support the free land camp, and you can email them at [email protected] if you really want to find ways to support them, donations will go to APIB (Brazilian Articulation of Indigenous Peoples) and you can keep up with their news here

(APIB is coordinated by, among others, Sonia Guajajara! so if you know her you know this means shit will get done)

I’m kind of horrified that so few articles about the fires in Brazil are mentioning the indigenous women’s march and indigenous people on the frontlines and occupying Brazilian government offices. Indigenous resistance to the destruction is happening, this isn’t being passively accepted.

hey do you have a source/link for this? i wanna share w some friends

Thousands of protestors singing “Do You Hear The People Sing” in a Hong Kong international airport. This is part of a 3-day sit-in and is only one example of the many marches, rallies, and sit-ins that are occurring daily.

The people of Hong Kong are fighting. Please do not let their voices go unheard around the world.

Hong Kong’s huge protests, explained by Vox.

Just in case someone wonders what they’re protesting against.

This is happening RIGHT NOW in Hong Kong. It is August, 2019, and they are fighting for their freedom being taken away from the totalitarian government of China.

Philippine Independence Day: Why this Google homepage Art matters

What does this have to do with Independence Day? Yes, it’s a beautiful reef, and the Philippines is proud of its reefs, but why this of all designs?

It’s amazing, really, how absolutely thoughtful and rebellious this piece of art is.

I have not exaggerated when I say that China is DESTROYING THE PHILIPPINES in terms of our marine natural resources.

They have been building artificial islands, thereby destroying miles of reefs and marine life. They have been stocking up MILITARY VEHICLES AND WEAPONRY on those islands.

And still, Duterte does nothing. Our supposedly tough president does nothing while China arms itself to destroy us and destroy our natural resources and destroy what will take centuries to rebuild.

This is why the image seen celebrating Philippine Independence is our untouched, beautiful coral reefs.

Because we need to fight for them.

“In Nepal, 150 people have been killed and 90,000 homes have been destroyed in what the UN has called the worst flooding incident in the country in a decade.

According to the Red Cross, at least 7.1 million people have been affected in Bangladesh - more than the population of Scotland - and around 1.4 million people have been affected in Nepal.

International aid agencies said thousands of villages have been cut off by flooding with people being deprived of food and clean water for days.”

This morning, we were awoken by evacuation sirens going off in town, and emergency alerts on our phone at 6 in the morning informing us about the missle that North Korea had launched. At first I thought it was just another emergency alert about a flood or an earthquake so I didn’t read through it completely until half asleep me started to register that the message said “missile fired. I repeat. missile fired. Evacuate to an underground level” I began to receive a handful of messages from my friends in Tokyo and other parts of Japan as well.

Today we were very fortunate that the missile dissembled into three parts and landed into the ocean. For the first time I genuinely felt scared. I hope my fellow friends and those shaken up further North and in Hokkaido are doing okay.

The scariest part was knowing the missile was launched unwarned. And it only took a span of 12 minutes from the time it was launched to when it has landed. Pretty much in a blink of an eye and there was not much time to evacuate to be honest so I just stayed in bed hoping for the best.

Before I moved to Japan, or took this job in Japan, my mom was a bit wary about me wanting to move to Japan because of its political climate with North Korea. I didn’t really take the issue as seriously, and even after living here I hadn’t taken it to heart because the first time the missile also landed in the ocean and I didn’t get any warnings on my phone. But situations like today made everything feel so much more real…

I went to work as usual today, and the energy in the room just felt odd. Everyone was talking about how scary this morning was, and many of my coworkers were laughing about them waking up injured or dead, and it really put our situation in perspective. I don’t know what could have happened if the missile landed on our land, but I very much could have died today. Today reminded me that I should spend time reflecting on my life, my purpose for living on this earth, as well as dying because we never know when something like this could take our life. In general, we just don’t know how long or short our life will be. If anything stuck with me today it’s my mom’s words:

「人間は何のために生まれてきたのかを真剣に考えていく必要がある。」

I’m just so happy to be alive.

Guys, I’m not going to ask for your prayers - I myself am not religious, but I am going to ask you to signal boost this. Marawi City in the Philippines has been invaded by ISIS, they are bombing the city and a school zone, and setting detainees free from prisons.

They say that this is a jihad, but anyone who even has a small understanding of Islam knows that Islam is not violent.

This is terrorism.

The world needs to know.

Update 1: They’re exchanging fire from both sides. Electricity is down. Friends are reporting that ISIS members are spotted in the schools and are giving them a few minutes to evacuate before they take over. Filipino media is silent.

Update 2: Christian teachers are being held hostage.

Update 3: Hospital staff being detained, ISIS flag has been raised in the city hospital. The fighting occurred not in the outskirts of Marawi, but on its streets, around the city hall and public market.

I’m sorry, I’m stringing together what information my friends are still giving me. I don’t know how long they can keep this up - a lot of them are saying that their phones are dying.

Update 4: Armed Forces of the Philippines telling people to go underground, airstrikes coming. Mortars are being prepared too.

UPDATE 5: The Philippine President and his family are in Russia. The Palace remains silent. The military is trying to invalidate ground reports to cover up their fuckups.

UPDATE 6: Philippine National Police and Armed Forces of the Philippines are not responding or have deployed extremely delayed support, according to the Marawi City Mayor in a phone interview.

UPDATE 7: CNN Philippines has a livestream covering the entire thing, eyewitness reports are in, Military is still saying “we’re in full control” when that’s obviously not the case.

UPDATE 8: reports in that terrorists are targeting cell towers now.

UPDATE 9: GENERALS POINTING FINGERS AT EACH OTHER INSTEAD OF ACTUALLY TRYING TO HELP PEOPLE.

More than 100 gay men have been detained “in connection with their nontraditional sexual orientation, or suspicion of such,” according to the New York Times, which cites the opposition newspaper Novaya Gazeta. The Russian newspaper says it confirmed the news with government officials and an analyst of the region also confirmed the news to the Times with her own sources.
Three men are known to have been murdered, although the real number is likely to be higher.

in almost every genocide, the first “act” is the rounding up and killing of a group of men, specifically.

In “root and branch” genocides they [”civilian men of ‘battle age’”] are often the first group to be separated out and massacred, paving the way for the murder of women, children, and elderly men. In more common articulations of genocide, however, they can be the only group slated for outright massacre, while women, children, and elderly men suffer a range of alternative fates involving rape, sexual exploitation, torture, forced maternity, murder, and expulsion.
Gender and the Future of Genocide Studies and Prevention

as the rest of this article explains this isn’t to say that men have it worst in a genocide, but that it’s important when you see a very common red flag for genocide to pay attention to the “conflict” in case any more markers of an impending genocide occur.

the g word is really loaded and i’m not bringing this up because i want to start an avalanche of “CHECHNYA IS COMMITTING GENOCIDE AGAINST GAY PEOPLE” fear mongering (that is the absolute last thing that i want). it’s just not possible to prevent any genocide without questioning whether a current conflict might eventually get there. and i do not think it’s nothing that genocide watch is reporting on this.

UPDATE 4/10/17

Gay men arrested in a ‘purge’ in the Russian region of Chechnya are being held in concentration camp-style prisons, reports have alleged.

Early reports emerged earlier this month that gay people are being targeted in the region, which is part of Russia but has substantial autonomy.

Russian newspapers and human rights groups report that more than 100 gay men have been detained “in connection with their non-traditional sexual orientation, or suspicion of such” as part of a purge. Several people were also reportedly feared dead following violent raids.

In a chilling response, a Chechen government spokesperson denied that there are any gay people to detain, insisting that “you can’t detain and harass someone who doesn’t exist in the republic”. The Kremlin denied any knowledge of a purge.

But reports have since emerged that the men arrested are being kept in horrific concentration camp prisons, where violent abuse and torture is common.

Based on interviews with eyewitnesses and survivors, Novaya Gazeta reports that a secret prison has been set up in the town of Argun to detain the men arrested in the purge.

One man who was released from the camp told the newspaper that he was subjected to violent “interrogations” at the camp, as Chechen officials attempted to get him to confess the names and locations of more gay men.

The officials also seized his mobile phone, targeting his network of contacts regardless of whether they were gay or not.

The camp was reportedly set up by Chechen forces in a former military headquarters in the town.

The newspaper reports allegations that the Speaker of the Parliament of Chechnya was among officials to visit the site, though the claims have not been substantiated.

The detainees face electric shock torture and violent beatings, while some of them have been held to ransom and used to extort their families.

Tanya Lokshina of Human Rights Watch wrote: “For several weeks now, a brutal campaign against LGBT people has been sweeping through Chechnya.

She continued: “Law enforcement and security agency officials under control of the ruthless head of the Chechen Republic, Ramzan Kadyrov, have rounded up dozens of men on suspicion of being gay, torturing and humiliating the victims.

“Some of the men have forcibly disappeared. Others were returned to their families barely alive from beatings. At least three men apparently have died since this brutal campaign began.”

She added: “These days, very few people in Chechnya dare speak to human rights monitors or journalists even anonymously because the climate of fear is overwhelming and people have been largely intimidated into silence.

“Filing an official complaint against local security officials is extremely dangerous, as retaliation by local authorities is practically inevitable.

“It is difficult to overstate just how vulnerable LGBT people are in Chechnya, where homophobia is intense and rampant.

“LGBT people are in danger not only of persecution by the authorities but also of falling victim to ‘honour killings’ by their own relatives for tarnishing family honour.”

Alexander Artmyev from Amnesty International spoke to Metro.co.uk.

He said that people who are not in Russia can help by joining the charity’s Urgent Action on Chechnya.

The action encourages people to write in Russian or your own language to Chairman of the Investigation Committee and Acting Head of the Investigation Committee for the Chechen Republic.

Amnesty has also asked the letter, which should ask for an investigation and appeal for protection for LGBT individuals, to be copied into Human Rights groups and diplomatic missions from your country.

This is terrifying

There are some fundamental truths:

1. The fascism you see around you is not spontaneous and neither foreign. It is hereditary. It comes from within America’s body politic. 2. Refugees are not born out of thin air. Their conditions are man-made; specifically manufactured by men in power. Men of affluence and clout. 3. Endless war facilitates endless radicalization.

Also this storm that we are feeling the first dainty breezes of has been brewing and ignored by specifically white liberals and moderates for easily as long as I’ve been politically conscious.

So if you fit anywhere in those categories ya’ll have some atonement to do and you better start now.
