1,500 year old Byzantine mosaics in Ravenna. Hands down one of the most amazing experiences I’ve had here.
“Abraham Mosaic”
A mosaic of the piety of the Old Testament prophet Abraham. On the left and in the center Abraham offers a calf to a table of three visiting angels, and on the right he is halted from sacrificing his son Isaac by the Hand of God.
Pieced together with gold and colored tesserae.
Made in 547 under the patronage of the bishops of Ravenna. Still located in situ.
“The Basilica of San Vitale”
An octogonal plan basilica with jagged buttresses bisecting pilasters around the outside. The many elevated windows allow for light to dance across the colorful mosaics and create an aesthetic of weightlessness.
Built out of stone bricks, with tile roofing.
Made in 547 under the patronage of bishops Ecclesius and Maximianus of Ravenna. Still located in Ravenna.
