Many New Yorkers will tell you openly to your face that local Democrats govern the city atrociously, if they don't know that you are a Conservative. But then they ask "what is the alternative, voting for a Republican?"
These are people who watched Rudy Giuliani's administration turn the city, in the 1990's, from an unkept violent mess (under a long succession of Democratic administrations) into a low crime model tourist destination. They watched Mayor Michael Bloomberg run as a Republican and successfully continue most of Giuliani's policies. Now in the space of a mere 6 years under Democrats again, they see that the city is barely recognizable; but they are confused about what should be done. Meanwhile the politicians that they voted for assure them that the city is absolutely fine; against their own personal assesments.
The blinding power of ideology is remarkable.
