The End Of "One Country, Two Systems" And The Future Of Freedom In Hong Kong

The Hoover Project on China’s Global Sharp Power hosted an event on The End of "One Country, Two Systems" and The Future of Freedom in Hong Kong with Victoria Tin-bor Hu, University of Notre Dame, and Nathan Law, Democracy Activist, on Wednesday, November 18, 2020 at 4:00 PM PT.

Jimmy Lai: The Last, Best Hope for Saving Democracy in Hong Kong

When Hong Kong democracy advocate Jimmy Lai last appeared on Uncommon Knowledge in October of 2019, the situation in Hong Kong was dire but still hopeful. Now, eight months later, the situation has gone from bad to worse, and since that interview, Lai has been arrested twice. In this conversation, Lai explains the widening crackdown the Chinese Communist Party is imposing on Hong Kong, including his interpretation of the recently proposed national security law, which Lai believes will give China the ability to control all aspects of Hong Kong’s freedoms and culture and destroy the city’s financial and media businesses. Lai also makes a plea to the United States and the rest of the world: help Hong Kong by sanctioning China, because in the wake of COVID-19, the country is at its most vulnerable moment in the last 40 years. Says Lai, “If we surrender, we will lose [our] freedom, we will lose the rule of law—we will lose everything.” Whether the world will hear Lai and the rest of the Hong Kong protestors and take action on their behalf remains to be seen. Finally, we ask Lai why he continues the fight for democracy even against seemingly unsurmountable odds. A visibly emotional Lai responds: “Now is not the time for safety, now is the time for sacrifice. . . . I can’t leave; I will fight until the last day.”

Reporter: What’s your name?

Hong Kong Protestor: Lee Chun Hei! I won’t commit suicide!

Police:

A reminder that Hong Kong police have been arresting children as young as 11. They have also fired at press and begun arresting reporters and aid workers with the excuse that they ‘might be protesters in disguise’.

They have been filmed beating protesters that have already been subdued/cuffed, as well as using their weapons incorrectly (firing rubber bullets at close range) and driving into crowds

People are dying.This is wrong.

A Hong Kong newspaper had its printing press lit on fire a couple days ago.

Please don’t forget or get complacent about Hong Kong! They are still fighting!

WHAT THE FUCK EVEN IS CNN?!

I showed this to my flatmate and she laughed about how Americans think that Hong Kong is in South Africa.

Your flatmate should apply for a job at CNN if she sees South Africa in the image. She’ll get the job.

I think there’s a bigger problem here;

Hong Kong's pro-democracy demonstrators protesting China’s attempts to quash their rights to self government appear to be only the latest pro-Western group forsaken by the Obama administration. Meanwhile, its high volume criticism of Israel continues unabated.

1. Obama would never support democracy. He wants in America what Venezuela and China have. Hong Kong and Israel will be left out to dry.

2. Of course Obama is going to condemn Israel. Has he ever stood with them? No. It's not surprising he would be condemning their every action.

3. Obama doesn't want Jews living in Arab neighborhoods because Obama is all about separating people based on their race and religion. God forbid they live harmoniously. Then he would have nothing to advocate for!

By Michael Martina and James Pomfret BEIJING/HONG KONG (Reuters) - Pro-democracy activists vowed on Sunday to bring Hong Kong's financial hub to a standstill after China's parliament rejected their demands for the right to freely choose the former British colony's next leader in 2017. The Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) endorsed a framework to let only two or three candidates run in the 2017 leadership vote. All candidates must first obtain majority backing from a nominating committee likely to be stacked with Beijing loyalists. The relatively tough decision by the NPC - China's final arbiter on the city's democratic affairs - makes it almost impossible for opposition democrats to get on the ballot.

I think Britain should have freed Hong Kong before their contract with the PRC expired and let Hong Kong become its own country. Hong Kong should have never been handed back to the PRC.
