Yusuf runs the pad of his ring finger along the edges of his sketchbook, chewing on his lower lip. His brow creases as he observes the sketch from a distance, looking from it to his subject, then back to the sketch again. Beside him in bed, Nicolò’s lips twitch upwards and he meets his husband’s gaze, pushing his reading glasses up the bridge of his nose. “Can I help you with anything, mister al-Kaysani?” He marks the page he was reading with a pencil and leans heavily against the pillows, looking at Yusuf through his eyelashes. His shirt rides up as he adjusts himself in bed and Yusuf cannot look at his abdomen right now, not before he finishes this sketch.
“I don’t like how this is turning out,” he scratches his chin with charcoal-stained fingers, his heart warming up when he hears Nicolò laugh at his mistake. “So now you’re laughing at your husband, mister al-Kaysani?” Yusuf asks without any bite, letting Nicolò pull him in by his shirt, straddling his legs and breathing in his scent.
“When my husband is being silly, yes,” Nicolò takes the sketchbook from his hands as if it were the most precious thing he had ever held and stares at the sketch quietly, his smile growing soft. Even after all their years together, Yusuf still waits with bated breath as Nicolò observes his work, his heart racing as he observes for his husband’s reaction. Yusuf notices how Nicolò’s fingers trace the exact spot where he had been sketching a few minutes earlier, just barely grazing the paper, his light blue eyes widening as he takes in every little detail.
It’s a simple sketch; just Nicolò reading in bed, his elegant fingers resting against the book’s spine as he holds it lightly, square frames resting precariously on the tip of his nose. Yusuf adds the lines on his forehead and around his lips and the strand of graying hair falling against his forehead, his beautiful mole and the perfect shape of his Cupid’s bow and the silly earring on his left ear, every tiny detail he loves about him.
When Nicolò finally looks up at him again, Yusuf’s heart skips a beat. “This is perfect, my love.” He takes his glasses off and leans even closer to him, their lips almost touching. “You’re perfect.”

Okay, I’m not sure if someone else has said this but since I literally cannot get it out of my head-
Joe has absolutely asked, “Hey, babe, can you hold this for me,” and, when Nicky agreed and extended his hand, given him his hand to hold.
In fact, he has pulled this move multiple times and Nicky falls for it every time. Joe keeps doing it because Nicky’s face just lights up when he realizes Joe’s given him his hand. Nicky goes about the rest of his day, even hours later, with this glow about him that makes Joe’s heart melt.
THE OLD GUARD 2020, dir. Gina Prince-Bythewood
The first time Nicky dies after they find out about Andy’s mortality. It’s an entirely different reaction from Joe than the previous times in the movie that Nicky’s died in front of him and that difference is pure terror.
He has no rational justification to think that Nicky won’t wake up – Andy is so much older than they are, they’ve both died countless times this week (the capture, the lab) and today – but he’s still reacting with genuine fear and grief in that moment before Nicky coughs back to life. It’s not a rational response to the situation, but it’s an eminently reasonable one.
He’s gone a thousand years with certain things being absolute and at the top of that list is ‘my family will live.’ Whatever else happens, they’ll get through it because they’ve always gotten through it because it’s literally what they are: survivors.
But their survival is not under their control; all of their martial competence, all of their acquired skills in languages and crafts and cultures and technology, everything they’ve mastered over a millennia… none of that keeps them alive. It just makes their lives better. They are ultimately like everyone else in this regard, forgetting that they’re not in control. We watch our diets and our health, we jog and take blood pressure medicine, we don’t engage in risky behaviors in the belief that this will extend our lives… all the while pretending that we won’t be felled by cancer or an aneurysm or a car crash or a pandemic.
The Old Guard do the same thing, just in a different key. They talk about their bizarrely extended lives and speak of an understanding that it’s not unlimited, but it’s the same way young people talk about mortality – it’s almost theoretical, not an awareness under the skin. Especially for Joe and Nicky, who’ve never met anyone like them who has died – Lykon is a story to them, an ancestor who died centuries before they were born. Quynh, on the other hand, is still alive despite conditions that would seem to invite a final death but haven’t. Andy is so old she’s eternal. They’ve died a million times, but they’ve forgotten the concept of mortality.
Booker is the closest to still understanding, the youngest by far with his original family a wound that he won’t let heal. Joe… Joe doesn’t remember mortality until Andy turns up in the lab, at which point his world is knocked off its axis.
And then Nicky gets shot in the head.
He’s sending me to my grave, I knew it 😭🤣

I just had the most awful though and I have to share.
I just imagined down the line that Joe or Nicky would become mortal. The others' reaction and life with their loved one for who knows how long, how long do they have left? How much pain there will be... and after they die... how will they live?
...I'm sad now
hey nonnie ♥️
i am a sucker for hurt and comfort as much as you but also consider: two men who have lived two extremely long lives, who have found love greater than most people have ever considered, and happiness despite all odds.
consider them finding out in the smallest of ways; joe gets a papercut one day that doesn’t heal. nicky, in the kitchen next door, startles at joe calling out his name, and catches the kitchen knife superficially on his knuckle. how when he runs to a panicked joe and grabs his hand, they both clearly see the matching nicks and how they both don’t heal like usual. consider the relief at knowing that still, even like this, they are together.
consider them sitting the immortal family down and telling them. and despite the tears, there’s just love and caring embraces shared. because neither joe nor nicky are grieving for themselves and they still have years and years to come.
consider the two of them settling down comfortably in a house where the door is always open for their loved ones, where there’s always the smell of lingering spices in the air, bookshelves laden with stories and music playing on the sound system. them striking up friendships with their neighbours and getting weirdly into the neighbourhood gossip.
consider them deciding, together as always, to retire from the active field. instead they become moving forces in volunteer and charity organizations. that putting roots down also means opening up their family, adopting children who get to grow up with the kindest, most loving fathers a child could ask for (and you just know they’re the loudest clappers at the school plays). the walls of joe’s studio are covered in butterflies and happy suns from where he’s helped the kids paint them; there are hand decorated step stools in the kitchen where nicky teaches them how the simplest meals can be an act of love.
consider them slowly growing older and taking the time to take their time. nicky kisses each of joe’s growing smile lines every morning; joe runs his fingers through nicky’s hair and admires the silver spreading through it out loud. they get to become locals at their favourite restaurants and in the summer when the best spanish spot in town clears out their courtyard for music nights everybody knows that the best dancers are the husbands who smile at each other like they’ve just fallen in love all over again.
consider how, for two men who have seen it all, growing old together is a grand new adventure as long as they have each other. and how, if legacy is planting a tree in a garden you never get to see, theirs will be a lovingly raised forest.
