OC: Is it painful for you to see these stories about girls you competed with?

AM: Of course, it's distressing to see such headlines because I can't imagine how the person who went through such a thing must feel. I would like to support them and probably these things cannot be forgotten. It's very hard but, despite what happened to them, maybe they could prevent it happening to others in the future.

I really love Morgan Hurd. I haven’t felt this fondly towards one single gymnast since Vanessa Atler back in the late 90s. 

But I don’t think she deserved to make this team, and I’m OK with her being a non-traveling alternate. 

I really think that two years of medals at Worlds made her rest on her laurels a little bit. And while other gymnasts in the US were busy upgrading like CRAZY, she wasn’t. I think she and Slava need to take this time to really sit down and take stock of exactly what they need to do in order for her to be on the team in Tokyo, because the competition is much stiffer than her worlds experiences in ‘17 and ‘18. 

I still think she can make the team in 2020, and I hope she does. But she’s not going to do it by sticking with what she’s been doing the last three years. She’s got to do something new and different.

I feel Morgan CAN do more difficult gymnastics and is more than capable of it. I’d rather see her miss a worlds team now and learn that lesson in time for next year.
