So recently in Fairy Tail I’ve begun to see a sort of pattern.
It’s one of those things we see all the time, but never really pay any attention to ya know? But in tonights episode, it stuck out to me for some reason. We’ve all seen Warrod right? One of the four Kings of Ishgal or whatever, who looks like a friggin tree. We’ve seen what he used to look like too, when he was young, with Mavis. Before he learned magic. Plant magic, specifically. Also, keep in mind that he is extremely well in touch with his magic, as well as a powerful wizard.
Another example. Acnologia. He was once human, and is now the most fearsome dragon out there. Granted he had some help transforming, but it was only after he learned dragon slaying magic, and was known for being a powerful dragon slayer at that. When the strongest dark mage in history poured in his magic, he transformed.
When Natsu asked Igneel why he and the other dragons were hiding in the dragon slayer’s bodies, one of the answers Igneel gave was to prevent them from turning into dragons. Keep in mind dragon slaying magic is rare, ancient, and powerful.
Do you see the recurring theme here? People being consumed by their magic because of its power. And who do we see in a similar situation right now? Gray. Or at least, that’s what appears to be happening. Whether or not Gray is mentally consumed right is questionable, but doesn’t change the fact that he is physically consumed by magic. We can tell that much from the black marks growing up his body.
Basically my point is, I am beginning to think once you reach a certain level of strength in magic, it begins to consume you. When you think about it, this isn’t such an unreasonable idea. We saw this in the Nirvana arc, and have seen it happen many other times in the show with the characters I listed above. It also makes sense that when the caster reaches a low point, and becomes weaker than their own magic, then their magic could take cover and consume them.
If this were to be true, then it could open the door to many possible theories, like Natsu and END, or even some on Layla, who was known for being a pretty powerful Celestial mage.
She was shown being able to easily open three celestial gates, even when she was physically fading (for what reasons are currently unknown). I’m thinking maybe her magic had begun to consume her as well. Her death was very mysterious; if it didn’t have anything to do with the main plot, I think Mashima would have been more specific on how she died, and maybe wouldn’t have had her die on the same day as the dragons’ disappearance.
