ruth bader ginsburg has died. call your senators and remind them over and over and over again of mitch mcconnell’s own rule to not replace supreme court justices in a presidential election year. call them as many times as it takes until they agree to not fill the seat until 2021. 202-224-3121

i haven’t called this number yet b/c usually i just call my senators directly, so i don’t know if you get a live person at this number or if it asks you to input your zip code or something. however!

if it gives you a live person, a little sample script:

“hi i’m a resident of [state] and i’d like to talk to my senator please.”

that’s all you need to lead with! you don’t need to volunteer any more info until they ask. if you’re asked for more--because some senators might have different policies--you can give it then, but you don’t need to lead with anything else.

once you’re transferred to your senator, i usually have wound up with a voicemail, which is nice and easy. however this script can also be used if you get a live person:

“hello! i’m a resident of [state] and i’m a registered voter. I’m calling you today because as my senator, I need you to make sure that you do not vote on a new Supreme Court Justice until after January, because of McConnell’s own rule that we should not replace supreme court justices during a presidential election year.”

you can end there, or you can add more if you’re feeling real into it--if you’ve got that good momentum and you want them to feel a little fear of you! you can be like “it would be hypocritical and unethical of you to go against the precedent set in 2016.” you can go off!

if you get like, a senator’s receptionist--i never have, bc i always get voicemails, so i don’t actually know if this is like, a thing, but just in case!--you could preface with “I have a message for my senator, can you please make sure to pass it along” or “i have a message for my senator and it is very important to me, as a registered voter, that my senator hears my opinions on government policy and represents the will of the people who vote”

just some nice aggressive reminders that your senator is meant to serve you, and should fear you. :)
