The hole in his side could reflect a puncture wound made by a poisoned arrow made by Apollo. The god and his sister goddess, Artemis, killed each of Niobe's children (the Niobids) after she arrogantly compares herself having a greater number than Leto, Artemis and Apollo's mother - a classical example of hubris.
