There were a few things I was trying to work on with this piece, and I'm hoping I hit most of them! I've been a big Infernal Devices fan for ages, so Will and Tessa have been long overdue. As always, let me know what you think!
Can anybody send me some good Will and Tessa (from TID) fics please☺️
Thanks for reccing me @jamiecarstairs !
That long link is a disaster but that’s all my Wessa stuff with the Herongraystairs stuff cut out.
Infernal War runs a little more Jessa but otherwise that list is all Wessa all the time.
If I’m gonna rec one of my own fics, Love and Memory is where you should start with my Wessa stuff.
Also @elanorjoy’s college AU is a cute Wessa fic Story: College Life
Those are all great. If you want more I’d also recommend:

BOOKS READ IN 2018 ⇾ Lord of shadows
“But he didn’t linger—he died happy and at peace, and he went on.”
Just typing it out makes me want to write a Wessa AU where Tessa transforms into him on some whim or dare without really thinking it through.
Maybe it could happen as early as at the dinner table when she first arrives at the Institute and she turns into Jessamine because no one else would fit into the dress. Will says something along the lines of “Too bad you can’t turn into me, red is my colour,” and in one of her flashes of temper, Tessa reaches out and grabs his sleeve and does it because he’s annoying her and maybe she is trying to show off.
And it leaves her with knowledge of his curse because it’s the primary thing he thinks about all the time. So even though she collapses back into her own body 10 seconds later because the corset was nearly killing her in his body shape, she can’t unknow it.
She thinks it’s real.
She is deeply worried about him anyways.
So she’s trying to convince herself that she is NOT falling in love with him.
He’s trying to push her away.
She starts spending time with Jem in a specific attempt to figure out how to help Will. She assumes he knows. She probably eventually tells him (Maybe thinking that part of his illness is exacerbated by Will’s curse?)
There is angst EVERYWHERE.
(yeah I tag-stalk, sue me)
Ooooh.
Let’s go with a version where Tessa tells Jem about Will’s curse and tells him very early in the story. Maybe on their walk to Black Friar’s bridge. Jem almost has a heart attack. Suddenly everything about Will makes sense.
Jem is now on a mission because curses can be broken.
This leads to Tessa and Jem spending a lot of time together. They bond as much or more than they do in canon as they dig through research and Tessa insists he take her along when he goes to chase down leads or talk to warlocks.
They are madly in love and neither of them have quite noticed it yet because in this story, Jem is focused on the task at hand. Tessa is less ‘object of affection’ and more ‘ally in Project Saving William Herondale’ so he isn’t as aware of his feelings as he is in canon.
There’s an exceptionally awkward conversation when Jem asks her if she’s in love with Will because he’s worried about her. After all they both believe the curse is real.
“No,” a long pause, “I don’t know. Can you stop yourself from loving someone? I’ve been trying. He makes it easy to hate him some days.”
And Jem realizes that no, you can’t stop yourself from loving someone and he’s not thinking about Will when he does.
They don’t have their boiling over point where suddenly they’re kissing. They have a slow dawning realization and infinite pining because it’s not about them. It’s never been about them. They’re supposed to be helping Will and they’re trying really hard to stay on task but they’re now both utterly aware of being alone in the library together or walking down the street pretending to be a couple and how much danger the other one is in because neither of them can sstop caring about Will even though they know it’s going to kill them.
The high school AU sounds amazing! I can't help but feel sorry for the janitors that have to clean all the glitter left behind from Magnus's dance nights. Do you think (not that you're writing it, but the imagination is strong) that it'd stay Wessa or tip more into herongraystairs territory? The students can never figure out which of them are just friends and which of them are dating XD
While in the concept stage it was going in Wessa directions… yeah, well, everything I write that includes these three has OT3 leanings at the very least. I have a Jessa moments in my goddamn Wessa wedding night smut fic.
So yeah. I could see this becoming that.
Will and Jem getting their students in on prank wars against each other. “We’re going to go up to the English department and steal all the teacher’s chairs.” and “We’re going to go down to the music room and replace their sheet music with copies of whatever poem we are reading.”
And Will and Tessa spending every prep period shut up in the office.
And Tessa’s philosophy class - the little one - gets shunted out of its regular classroom for repairs and told to use the band room which is actually in use during that period so she ends up teaching in a practice room and then loitering around and hanging out with Jem.
And yeah, the students shipping them and getting into arguments because “Herondale and Gray are definitely making out in that office,” but also, “Gray and Carstairs bring each other coffee every morning that definitely means something.”
Last but assuredly not least, Cassandra Jean’s Tessa and Will and the DSDS in Clockwork Princess.
*sigh*
If Will and Tessa weren't in love they'd be the ultimate brotp. I mean, they are an excellent couple but imagine them as best friends.
So, my first reaction to this question was, “But they are best friends, Nonny! That’s why their relationship is so amazing.”
Immediately following that, I thought “Also, Jem is Will’s BFF. By the time Will meets Tessa, there’s no room in his heart for a platonic best friend because Jem is literally the other half of his soul.”
And then I asked myself, “Self, what would upagainstabookcase say in response to this question?” and this is what happened:
So what if Will and Jem never met? What Edmund Herondale’s gambling problems got out of hand (really out of hand) early on and the Herondale’s lost Linetter’s property in Wales and they had to immigrate to the U.S. to start over?
Punk Tessa is my new queen. Tank you
nifeandaccurateprophefies replied to your post “Have you tried hitting it repeatedly”
punk tessa is everything i never knew i wanted. and i’d probably have the same starry-eyed reaction as will.
I couldn’t shake the idea of her. Tessa is such a good girl until she’s not.
Some general headcanons for this character because I love her so much
- she didn’t set out to be aesthetic punk, she genuinely could only afford 2 pairs and jeans even when they got so ratty they crossed out of “garbage” and back into “stylish” then she just kept adding to it because if your clothes are falling apart and pink people assume you are poor, if your clothes are falling apart and black people assume you intended it.
- people treated her differently as well and the first time a friend dared her into adding purple streaks in her hair she found people treated her even more differently.
- after her aunt died and her brother got his ass thrown in prison, she was left alone. She had the condo her aunt had already paid off so she wasn’t on the street but she didn’t have much else.
- she found that people’s disdain bothered her less and less and started wearing the attitude like armour. If people didn’t like her, that was their problem not hers and the realization was freeing.
- she had lost her family but she started rebuilding herself and found that she could be happy even if she wasn’t the kind of normal her aunt would have wanted.
- she works odd jobs - transcription and freelance editing work - dog walking on sunday afternoons - she baby sits for one of her neighbours and scandalizes all the nice parents at the kid’s school when she shows up to walk the boy home in the afternoon - then the poetry zine
- she often has friends sleeping on her couch because she has a couch that can be slept on and Tessa can’t say no to someone in need
- beyond the blue hair and combat boots, she’s actually very straight edge. She doesn’t drink and doesn’t do drugs. People who assume her to be a party girl are always baffled to find out that she spends most evenings reading while wrapped in an old sweater
- she claims she’s far too busy for a relationship - at least until she starts kissing strange boys in art labs
- she has tattoos.
- she won’t show them to you.
- she might show them to Will, she’s still deciding.
Have you tried hitting it repeatedly
“Have you tried hitting it repeatedly?” the girl asked.
Will looked up from the ereader already glaring. He had been fussing with it, fighting with the buttons and nothing was making the screen unfreeze. The girl sat at the next table over, facing him. She had her foot up on the chair across from her. Heavy black boots, a pair of shorts that showed off a pair of legs that distracted Will’s gaze. She raised her eyebrows at him and he realized he had been leering. He hadn’t mean to leer but the remains of her shirt slipped off her shoulder and her dark brown hair was twisted back from her face in a messy bun. Between the dilapidated jacket and the blue streaks in her hair and the entire ensemble left him star struck for a moment. She did not belong in a place like this.
“No,” he said.
“I’ve heard that’s quite effective,” she said.
“I am not going to smash my kindle,” he said.
“Not smash, hit, they’re very different. Here,” she said and she held out a hand. She leaned out across the tables between them and against his better judgement Will got up and sat down across from her and put the device in her hand. She smirked at him. Beneath the eyeliner and the leather, she was younger than he had thought, even younger than he was.
She tapped at his little device, doing things he couldn’t see and watching him over it with eyes that might have been blue and might have been gray and were full of mischief. She handed it back a moment later. He realized he had been watching her face and she hadn’t broken eye contact.
“Are you a student here?” he asked.
“No,” she said, “Are you?”
“No,” he admitted.
“So we’re both trespassers then,” she said.
Tessa smiled; Jem and Will continued their conversation, completely oblivious to her ghost.
[I know it is against the rules of the meme but I’m going to adjust the pov on this for angst reasons. Set after the automaton explosion in Clockwork Prince].
Jem dropped down into the chair beside his bed. He was haggared, looking infinitely older than Will had ever seen him. He was battleworn and his hair a nest of silver like he had been running his hands through it. There was blood on his face. Just a smear on his cheek. Will blinked at him with bleary eyes. He was waiting on Silent Brothers to come and pull metal shards out of his back so the oratzes would work. He swam in a haze of pain and bloodloss.
Tessa was there behind Jem’s shoulder and he had to force down the urge to smile at her. He’d caught her as the automaton had exploded, had pulled her down and tried to keep the worst of it away from her. She was already up and walking around, still wearing the ripped and bloodsoaked suit of boy’s clothing. She had been so still before he’d passed out, he had worried.
Jem was talking but Will could clear his thoughts enough to listen and then everything was dark.
***
Will found a note from Magnus when he woke up and he looked up and down the empty infirmary before he opened it. His heart skittered and he stood before asking himself if he was strong enough for it. He wasn’t. He sat back down the feverish heat of the iratzes making his skin prickle.
It was getting colder. He blinked open his eyes and Tessa was sitting on the bed opposite him. She hadn’t changed her clothes and her hair was loose. He couldn’t hold her in focus. Perhaps he needed to see Magnus tomorrow. Perhaps he was too weak.
She reached for him but her hand stopped shy of touching his face. When he blinked he must have lost consciousness for longer than a moment because she was gone and his fever was climbing again.
He lay back down.
***
Sophie woke him with food and a serious face. She hadn’t slept well and he wanted desperately to ask her what was wrong but that would be more concern than he could safely show. He took a piece of food off the tray and ate it without checking to see what it was. He was starving and he fell on the food.
Tessa followed Sophie in and she must have left a door open because a draft followed her. She was still in the jacket and the pants that showed off far more of her legs than he’d ever allowed himself to imagine seeing. She was still bloody and bedraggled.
“You need to change, that ensemble is dreadful,” he said. Her expression was somehow serene and puzzled all at once but she said nothing. Sophie sighed in annoyance and stomped away. Will watched her go without bothering to explain or apologize and when he looked back Tessa had slipped away too. Probably offended by his rudeness. That was probably for the best. He sighed to the empty room.
***
Will had left the tray and gone down to wash and change and check himself for new scars. He shoved his door open already planning his trip to see Magnus. He stopped in the door. Jem sat in the middle of his bed with his feet crossed and a book held in his hands. Will started to say something saecastic but Jem’s expression was empty.
“What happened?” Will asked in a voice he didn’t use for anyone else. Jem’s expression creased into a frown and then emptied out again. He held the book flat between his palms, pressed together like in prayer or supplication.
“You don’t know,” Jem said.
Jem shivered and Will saw her fade in over his shoulder. He didn’t seem to notice the change in temperature.
She had been too still.
There had been too much blood.
He’d known that but he’d seen her so he hadn’t thought to worry.
The impression of a tattered girl over Jem’s shoulder wavered. She wavered but Will could see the shadow on her side where thw wound was. Then she disappeared.
Vanished into the air like a figment of his imagination. No, like a ghost.
“She didn’t survive it,” Will said and his voice had as much expression as Jem’s face.
“I know you won’t care or you’ll pretend you don’t care but William, I care,” Jem said with a sharp note of warning in his voice. Will didn’t say a word. He looked at the book between Jem’s hands, A Tale of Two Cities. Tessa was probably reading it. Had been. She had been reading it, he corrected.
“I care,” Will breathed out falling backwards into the bed and closing his eyes though he could feel Jem’s attention on him. He ignored it. He was cursed but he had thought he could protect people from it. He was a child. Naive and careless and dangerously stupid. He let out a shaking breath and pulled in another and pretended that neither of them were a sob. Jem lay back so their shoulders touched but he was silent too.
He felt the chill and opened his eyes to catch sight of her frowning but solid. She blurred at the edges like she was painted in watercolours but her features were defined. The colours were indistinct but his memory filled in the blue gray of her eyes and the colour of her skin.
“I’m sorry,” he said.
“Not everything is your fault, William,” Jem said and Tessa looked at him but Will knew he wouldn’t see her. Her expression was all agreement but they were both wrong.
She had loved him.
He had killed her.
All who love you will die.
“What you are, what you can do, it is like some great miracle of the earth, like fire or wildflowers or the breadth of the sea. You are unique in the world, just as you are unique in my heart, and there will never be a time when I do not love you.”
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about Will and immortality and characterization.
Why didn’t Will choose some extreme kind of immortality? He’s the type to self sacrifice so even if he didn’t want to be a vampire - he’d to it for Tessa. Once the children are grown why not? Why not just deed everything to Jamie and run away together?
It would be a scandal but the man married a warlock, he’s not particularly untouched by scandal. And unlike Jem and Alec who are committed to being Shadowhunters - Will is a Shadowhunter by circumstance more than choice. He joined them because his mother had always said they were heartless so he figured there would be no one there to love him. He’s got a hell of a hero complex but there isn’t any reason he wouldn’t be content to run off with Tess and be a vampire doing heroic things.
Yes there are vampire politics and expectations but the two of them have enough power to simply tell the vampires to fuck off and whoever they found to change him would have been made well aware of the plan.
Tessa would have taken some convincing but Will could have convinced her because it would have meant she didn’t lose him. They could go back and visit the kids and grandkids (who I imagine would not follow in those footsteps - they’d stay mortal and live out their mortal lives with their mortal families).
Will’s impulsive and committed. His priorities are the children, Tessa, Jem, first and everything else a distant second. Leaving the Clave couldn’t have hurt the kids once they were grown (though it would have when they were kids) and it would have meant he never had to leave Tessa and Jem. Will would make a crazy choice like that. To hell with sunrise, with the Clave, with everything else.
Will as a vampire who looks roughly 50, Tessa a warlock who looks roughly 20, running around the world getting into hijinks and trying to do good.
I like this plan.
