To anyone wondering if it's worth it to tear down fascist posters or whatever. I spent a few months last year engaged in silent battle with another student at my school who was putting anti trans stickers up everywhere. I had it down to a system where every night I would walk the five block radius they went up in, and tear down all the ones I could reach, and use a stick to put duct tape over the others. Like, within hours of the stickers going up, I would have already purged the whole zone. I knew the basic schedule of whoever put them up based on when and where the stickers appeared. I probably could have found them in person if I'd wanted to. And I told all my classmates and friends what the stickers looked like and got them to rip them down too. And after a few months of this, the stickers slowed, and then stopped forever.

My point is, a lot of this fashy or right wing stuff is one local weirdo. And if you pay attention, and do a little light organizing with your friends, you can basically make their efforts into a giant sisyphisean exercise in misery. You control your streets!

Remember: It costs money to keep printing those stickers, but ripping them down is free.

when dogs are scary smart

over the last several months, we have been implementing a protocol to eliminate karybelle the sheltie’s barking surrounding her mealtimes. we have accomplished this by initially introducing an alternate activity during prep time (stuffed kong) and religiously giving her a time out gated in the yard if she stops that activity to bark, thus delaying her dinner until she’s quiet. this has been extremely successful; she’s gone from barking literally 100+ times during meal prep to barking 0 times, and only occasionally slips up. the behavior she has chosen to replace her meal-prep-screaming (after all, that energy has to go somewhere) is frantically - but silently - running circles around the coffee table to finally slam into a perfect down-stay as her bowl is set down.

this evening as the food was coming out, karybelle seamlessly slipped into her silent circling routine. except after a couple of reps, she abruptly changed course, yeeted herself out the dog door, barked once, and immediately jumped back in to resume her circling.

if that isn’t a demonstration of crystal clear understanding of criteria, i…don’t know what is lmao

literally the canine version of this

so like do you know what the best work thing is

when your boss is super condescending in staff mass-texts

and also doesn't understand why it's a bad idea to only have two people on shift at a time in an assisted living facility

some of our residents have space heaters! we keep them clear but it's a risky thing to have when, in the event of an emergency, you essentially have one person evacuating thirteen people with varying levels of mobility, some of which are on oxygen, some of which are memory care patients. the other person can't help because they need to stay outside with the evacuated residents.

i have one resident that i have to set like 20 minutes of time aside to help her do anything, because she is physically weak and tends to shut down when she has trouble, and that's 20 minutes you don't have when something is going wrong. i can only spare that time because i work nights.

'don't be so negative' is not a solution to a lack of safety. the floor staff has told her this. i understand that it's a very small business and we're in the process of pulling it up out of a financial hole, but staff and food are not corners you can cut. not if you give a damn about the people who are putting an immense amount of trust in you to keep them safe and well cared for.

THAT'S THE THING we're supposedly a nonprofit! where the fuck is that grant money going, not to mention the rent people still have to pay

friends, if I can give you one piece of advice for those of you who are new to work, or are about to enter the workforce, especially if you have any sort of office job:

Do not work on your days off.

"But--"

DO NOT WORK ON YOUR DAYS OFF.

Do not work on your breaks

Do not “answer a few emails” on your vacation

Do not work off the clock

Doing this doesn’t reward you with more money or whatever. It rewards you with more work.

'that falls outside of my availability'

'i will make [whatever they're trying to talk to you about] my first priority when i return'

'respectfully, i would rather not bring personal matters (see: why you want to take time off) into the workplace'

For those of you too young to know, the Washington Post is the paper that broke the Watergate Scandal.

This is the paper that won a Pulitzer for its coverage of Jan6.

For this paper's owner to refuse to publish a political cartoon (specifically because it makes the owner and the President elect look bad) is a harbinger of deep and absolute facism, where the government controls the press.

VERY well put, and right on the money. This betrayal to their history and calibre of reporting should have everyone angry, disgusted, and terrified.

I need you all to know that r/sonicplushes has been in absolute SHAMBLES over the build-a-bear Shadow. People are posting the exorbitant prices scalpers are selling it for. It's going up to, no joke, 1,500 dollars. There's a scam website claiming to be selling the plushies for like 10 dollars. Someone got their package stolen. I checked the subreddit a few days ago and every single post was about the Shadow BAB plushie. I suspect the only reason that's not fully true today is because there's a fucking Shadow Build-a-Bear Discussion Thread. There is a CONTAINMENT THREAD for bemoaning the fact that it's out of stock (and no it is not fully working to keep him contained). There's a FUCKING KOTAKU ARTICLE ABOUT IT. It is chaos in there, sandwiched between general plushie posts and images of the BAB Shadow looking extremely cute/stylish.

HE'S SO POPULAR

making posts about how beer tastes bad is a lot like that painting of a jester harassing a bunch of dogs while leaning over a wall, except the jester is below the dogs and trying so hard to reach them, and all the dogs are extremely beautiful and strong, and have a wonderful community built on love, and they never want for anything. they never want for anything.

🔊🔊 END STAGE DISCOURSE!! END STAGE DISCOURSE!! WE HAVE ARRIVED AT "FICTIONAL SEX IS COERCIVE BECAUSE CHARACTERS ARE BEING FORCED TO DO THINGS BY THE AUTHOR"!!!! 🔊🔊

My favorite professor, shout out Glenn, would interrupt students who were saying "Well XYZ clearly felt--" and go "No, backtrack, scratch that. They are a character. Not a person. They don't have any thoughts other than what the writer clearly specifies on paper they have. Don't give agency to nonliving things, they are not real, they never were real, and it is dangerous to lose that line."

He was a sweet man and raised in the Midwest so interrupting people hurt his very soul, that's how dangerous he felt the idea of losing the line of fiction was.

He notably also taught a course called Bible in Lit which I took and those lines came back a lot.
