Thank you so much it really is a pleasure. While other blogs chose a selection of posts that casts an eye inward on the irresponsible writing choices and inequality of today’s modern Glee, I’ve chosen a selection of posts that speaks to the fandom as a whole during these troubling times filled with character uncertainty and unbridled social wank because if there’s two things fandom needs right now, it is sunshine and orgasms. Also cacti.

Seen, but not really heard: Walnut Creek native go-to trombonist for hit series 'Glee'

WALNUT CREEK — You’d hardly call Erik Hughes a “Gleek” — the nickname for fans of “Glee,” the popular TV show about a high school glee club. In fact, Hughes had never watched a single episode.

That turned out to be a good thing, because when he first walked onto the set, he could stay focused.

“I wasn’t the least bit star-struck because I didn’t know who any of the actors were, ” Hughes said. “I could stay professional. You’re not supposed to take pictures and ask for autographs or stuff like that.”

Now a senior jazz studies major at the University of Southern California, Hughes — a Northgate High School alum whose parents and grandparents still live in Walnut Creek — made his debut on “Glee” in the final episode of Season 2, that aired in May 2011.

It was the episode about the cutthroat Nationals musical competition that New Directions, the underdog glee club of the fictitious McKinley High in Lima, Ohio, tries to win every year. Hughes, a trombonist, was invited to appear along with other USC musicians as part of a pretend school orchestra.

You know, that’s kind of a stretch for me. It’s wonderful. Like I said, I’m a huge fan of musical theater, but I never thought I would ever do it, just because I never had that big, kind of Broadway voice, and I’ve never made any claims to being a trained technical singer as opposed to you who are, it’s not a lot of vibratos and a big voice here. I’m much more of a, like, [whispers] singer-songwriter, kind of, you know, whispering into the mic kind of thing. But I’m learning! I’m learning. That was Something’s Coming and we did that on Glee which was just an absolute blast because that’s the closest to Tony I’d ever gotten in my life.
