Woodlawn Cemetery, The Bronx, NYC
Such perfect weather for a walk in Woodlawn Cemetery yesterday. Thanks to my enthusiastic participants! The fall colors were gorgeous. Get out there and see some trees, everyone.
Tickets are still available to join me this Saturday for an obscure art/history walk through Woodlawn Cemetery. The place has 1,300 mausoleums, but we will scout out a few that are especially interesting, like the Untermyer Memorial designed by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney in 1925. It opens on three sides with metal doors and reveals these sculptures within.
Yesterday ended up being lovely weather for a visit to the Green-Wood Cemetery and its catacombs. Great groups for both tours and if any of you attendees are reading, thank you for joining!
Missed out? I'm leading another walk with Atlas Obscura this coming Saturday at Woodlawn Cemetery. Tickets still available:

This week I wrote a story for Hyperallergic on the art in Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx:
Stepping through the gates of Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, you are first awed by the sheer number and size of the mausoleums that tower over its more than 400 acres. Once you begin to explore this 19th century city of the dead, you discover the incredible details that went into all these personal memorial estates, from the ornate metal gates to the bronze, granite and marble statuary, and then peaking through the doors you see bursts of color in delicate stained glass. You notice the sculptures of familiar cemetery motifs of angels and mourning ladies, but also highly personal tributes by some of the most recognizable 19th and 20th century artists. Read more.
