BFC PROPAGANDA: YOU ARE NOW REQUIRED TO LOOK AT ✨ HIM ✨
(And also pretty please read this post through; it's important, trust me.)
THAT IS A FULL GROWN MAN RIGHT THERE. BLACK FOOTED CATS ARE ALWAYS BABY.
Fact time because fuck you learn about my favorite animal right now 💖
- The scientific name for these guys is Felis Nigripes, and if that first bit sounds familiar, it's because that's the same Genus as your house cat. They're so closely related that their only separation is on the species level.
- BFCs are one of the smallest cats in the world, rivalled only by the Rusty Spotted Cat. They reach a maximum weight of 5lbs, around half that the average house cat, and average at 3lbs, which is 3 times smaller than the average house cat.
- Although they're miniscule, they're mighty. BFCs hold the title of Deadliest cat in the World, with a hunt success rate of about 60%; 3 times that of any big cat.
- Even then, they also have the highest body count; BFCs can kill and eat up to 15 animals in a single night. That's more than a Leopard does in half a year.
- BFCs aren't picky either! If they can get their teeth around it, they'll eat it. This includes animals about twice their size, as well as venomous or otherwise dangerous animals.
- A single BFC can have a territory that spreads for miles. They'll endlessly hunt within it for a mile or more in a single night, before returning to a burrow to sleep through the day.
- In cultures that share space with BFCs, many legends and rumors have cropped up. One legend claims they can kill giraffes, while rumor among farmers is that they can disembowel sheep.
- Some of the largest ongoing studies on BFCs are funded and staffed primarily by American and German Zoos and Organizations. Despite decades of research in the field, wild BFCs are still poorly understood, and require more widespread recognition to help in their research and conservation.
One way you can help Black Footed Cats is by reblogging this post to help spread the word!
If you can, also consider looking into different nonprofits that do research and education, and donate, share around, or even volunteer!
Lack of public knowledge is a big roadblock for the conservation of thousands of species, so a great way to help is to simply talk about them!
