folks, i fear we might be cooked

but if it’s the right thing, it’s the right thing because honestly FUCK neil he’s such a fucking twat so if the show needs to be cancelled to get him out of the mainstream, fine we can take that bullet because the victims have been taking all the ones that actually hurt

So there are rumours that production on season 3 of Good Omens has been paused. Not cancelled, just to be super clear. I'm feeling a lot of things:

- relief that the studio might be addressing/reckoning with the allegations against Gaiman (I've felt a growing discomfort at how the victims' stories seemed to have been ignored by more mainstream media - Disney cancelling production on The Graveyard Book appears to have opened the door)

- anger that his actions hurt so many and went unchallenged for so long; how he has harmed the livelihoods of those who work on the show; at how this has affected STP's family

- sadness that we may not see Sheen and Tennant bring Aziraphale and Crowley to life any time soon (edited as it originally made it sound like I was saying it would never happen)

- comfort as I recall that there are many writers, artists and creators who have already given the show many endings we can take solace in

Of course I also feel this:

In light of the Good Omens production delay news, I just wanted to echo what a lot of people have been saying. I do not support Neil Gaiman, his actions, or his refusal to own up to them. I hope, for the sake of Terry Pratchett’s memory and also out of a selfish want for a happy ending, that the story of Good Omens can be finished without him producing the series. I hope they are replacing him as showrunner, and I hope that is the end of this news.

Like many others, I looked up to Neil Gaiman as an example of a writer who was unafraid to include explicitly queer representation in his works (among other aspects of his writing). I have loved his work for years. This news over the past few months has just been another reminder that a lot of men, especially wealthy white men in positions of power, can and do routinely abuse that power and cause immense suffering to others. I stand with the victims, because I will never defend anyone who has done the things he has done, regardless of how much I used to admire their work.

Anyway. Let’s hope that we get a good update soon. And in the meantime, let’s reach out to each other. Fandom is built for times like this.

Agreed. It’s sad but sobering to know how hypocritical someone can be. I went through a very real grief process after hearing the news, precisely because I thought he was one of the good ones.

But I can’t take away the queer joy that some of his work created. That joy is ours and it doesn’t belong to him.

I hope they take on other writers to finish GO. They already did it for portions of GO2, so just continue it?

GOS3 Thoughts

Yesterday was a giant clusterfuck of a day in my offline life and I was operating on almost zero sleep so I decided it was not the day for my unfiltered feelings about the latest GO news.

However.

This is honestly causing me to feel something like hope and positive feelings toward the show for the first time in two months.

I've been having every emotion under the sun about this whole situation, as so many of us have, but one thing that I've been feeling more and more strongly lately is that I absolutely would not be able to stomach watching the final season if NG wasn't removed from the show as entirely as possible. I haven't been able to stop imagining what it would be like for the cast and crew if business continued as usual on the show, most of them probably locked into contracts and legally forbidden to speak out about the allegations so as not to garner any negative publicity. It all just felt so horrifically dystopian that I've been actively hoping for the show to be canceled instead.

But if the result of this pause in production is that they publicly acknowledge the allegations and kick NG to the curb?

On a personal level, I might actually be able to resurrect some of my affection for this show and this story. And far more importantly, on a wider level, it will mean an abuser is facing something resembling consequences, and it will mean the rest of the artists involved in making the show happen will not be made to continue working under a known abuser, and this can only be a good thing is what I'm saying.

Agreed. This is the best case scenario. We can’t have Neil involved, he needs consequences, but I want GO to continue. It’s such an important piece of queer media (with a lot of mainstream coverage) and the lifeblood of so much of the cast and crew. GO is so much bigger than just Gaiman.

🏕️I love Snufkin so much. He’s deeply introverted and philosophical in a way I’ve never seen so eloquently depicted in any media I’ve seen. He is at one with nature and has the confidence to go where he needs to go for his own mental well-being. He has qualities I both share and long for in my own life. His relationship to Moomin holds a special place in my heart. 🤍💚
