It boggles my mind when people don’t think Hook has the most flawless redemption arc on this show. Hook has the best redemption arc on this show for the sole reason that he’s the only “villain” that did not try to find the damn author to change the shitty choices HE made. HE takes blame for his actions. HE works hard to be forgiven by people and to earn their trust back instead of trying to force someone to fix his past. HE is focusing on bettering himself for the future while acknowledging his poor decisions and learning from them and taking his fate in his own hands.
Now go. Save your boy.
#but not only could they not snuff out his inherient bravery#but how smart he is#he immediately puts the pieces together#logically#and trusts in both it and her completely#he barely knows her#but he trusts his gut and how it’s screaming HER HER HER HER at him#and telling him that this woman is worth every risk#so he risks it all#to help her#to keep her safe#and to help them both have a chance to be together#happy and in love#i cry for eternity (shutup ann captain–kitten)
You know what I love about this too? He said in Season 2, “A man unwilling to fight for what he wants, deserves what he gets,” and that’s exactly what’s happening here. He trusts them, he trusts his gut as Ann said, and he’s making the choice to fight for that reality – that life with this amazing woman and her equally amazing boy – and I think that’s really freaking beautiful, man.
Killian Jones (finally believing himself to be a Hero).
This moment was SO important and I hope it doesn’t get overshadowed by the fact that he said those words after Emma’s failed attempt to say she loved him. Instead she thanked him for risking his life to help Henry and her. And he responded by referring to himself as a hero.
Because even in Rumple and the Author’s AU, even when stripped of his courage, skill, and memories, Hook did the heroic thing. Because that’s who he is is at his very core.
He risked his life for even the possibility of love. Because he felt a connection with Emma. Because he wanted to save this woman he’d just met and her son. He faced certain death to help them.
The author wrote away the pirate. He got rid of Captain Hook. But he couldn’t get rid of Killian Jones. That man survived the rewrite - and got a good look at his true self.
He’s a Hero. And he finally believes it.

okay seriously is killian jones the only character on this show who, when he doesn’t like who he is, or the choices he makes—actively CHANGES his behavior and becomes a better person on his own rather than force someone else to change his life for him
(x)
He loves he SO much that he was actually able to break out of Rumple’s control, ever so slightly, to grab on to her and try to warn her. Warn her this wasn’t him, warn her not to trust what he was saying. THAT’S true love okay. Rumple had his HEART. He was under complete control here, but he managed to push through JUST enough to send his Swan a message. It’s just all too much for me to take in right now. Do not tell me Killian Jones doesn’t care for Emma Swan more than anything. Do not.
The look on Killian’s face when he’s forced to do whatever Rumple orders him to do is the reason why I love him so much and why I will stan him in hell.
He hates himself even more than the man making him do this.
He has no pleasure, he is no sadistic, he isn’t liking it, he feels disgusted by himself, he feels shame, he feels regrets, he feels horror.
He hates himself for the things he does, and this is why he is no villain, why he’s no monster.
Remember he’s the victim here, remember he’s the one being abused here. And nevertheless, he hates himself all the much more. He thinks he is not worth loving, he keeps loathing himself.
Those traits arent the traits of a villain. He’s a good man with a good heart who knows where the good is and what is wrong, and seeing him hating himself for the terrible actions he is forced to do, wow no.
Killian Jones, your.faves.could.never
It kills me that you can see the emotion deaden. The love he just displayed to Emma melts from his features in favor of sadness, fear and a sense of foreboding. He knows how this story ends. He knows Gold always gets what he wants eventually and that means, Emma in the hat, and him dead with a crushed heart. He knows that Gold is going to make this particularly painful for him, possibly even force him to be the one to put Emma in the hat. This face, this sad resignation beneath directly parallels the end of Kansas when Emma tells him she’s going back to NYC. Yet there’s no smile, no new charming to greet. No happiness to even attempt to illuminate his features. His hope is gone for now and he doesn’t know how he’s going to get it back and he fears that no amount of bravery and cleverness is going to save him now.
"#but someone is always missing from the picture #killian jones is not there" Maybe there is a reason that he doesn't fit in there.
It’s 3.49am where I am in Australia and I was tempted to leave this be until later, but okay, like what reason? Sorry, but I can’t think of a single reason why Killian Jones does not fit in the picture. Because:
- He is a hero, just like the rest of them. Emma Swan said he was a hero too, in 3x22. David said in 4x04 that he has changed. (and it’s a fact, he has.)
- He is considered part of Emma’s family, not even just her friend. Just in the last episode 4x07, Emma referenced that her family spans 3 generations and 400 years. Read this if you need convincing.
- He is now on good terms with the Charmings, they consider him “family” enough that he could cuddle Emma Swan in 4x02 right under their noses, and even more so that they could see that she was happy with him when they went on a date in 4x04.
Yes, it’s true that right now, Killian Jones is not there because, just like 3x17, he has a whole giant lie that he has yet to confess to Emma. But it’s not that he isn’t changing, or trying to change. He HAS changed, he is TRYING to change, and he CONTINUES to try to change.
Yes, it’s true that the reason why Killian is not in the picture for both 3x17 and 4x08 is to show that he is not quite there yet. And the big reason for this is because he doubts himself. He doubts his heroism, he doubts his ability to be righteous and noble and honourable and good. And that is largely because of his past. In the past he was cruel, he was a villain, no question about that. But he doubts the changes that have taken place. He is insecure about it, and that is why in 4x04, Rumple could play on Killian’s insecurities in order to manipulate him to do his bidding.
Killian Jones is on a journey, and yes, there is a reason why he isn’t in those two scenes in 3x17 and 4x08. But what I meant in my tags was that in truth, in a BIG PICTURE, LONG TERM SORT OF PERSPECTIVE, Killian Jones is missing from these scenes because truthfully in all retrospect, he belongs there. He belongs with them. He should be with them.
That is why I said he is not there/missing. Because I believe with all my heart that once he overcomes his demons, comes clean, and reaches the greatest amount of character development we’ve seen from any character on the show (aside from Emma herself), Killian Jones deserves his right, should have the confidence, and will most certainly eventually be bold enough to stand beside his true love, Emma Swan, and the rest of her family.
Hook has no concern about his own wellbeing right now all he is concerned about is Emma because she is upset and the sheriff’s station just blew up and she feels out of control and he’s CONCERNED and wants to be there for her and help her work through whatever is going on he doesn’t want her to feel alone in this because he’s not scared of what she and her family is scared of because he’s a survivor and whatever lamp post is about to fall on him right now really doesn’t matter to him, Emma matters more
#maybe because he too has a tragic childhood that still upsets and affects him like yours #and because you two are kindred spirits #and are more alike that you are aware #and now that you’ve shared your childhood with him before anyone #he’s going to do the same #because you trust each other #and care #and are in love #and even though hes 200+ years old #there are parts of his childhood that haunt him to this day #and we’re gonna see sad young killy on our screens soon #i am emotion
oKAY BUT CAN I JUST POINT SOMETHING OUT IN THIS SCENE WHERE KILLIAN DROPS EMMA OFF?
as a fellow film student here (hi there), I’m always told by my teacher that during the shooting of my practicals/short films, a scene should be properly lit to show an actor’s face unless the lack of light is purposeful to the film/plot and deliberate. (make sure you remember this. it’s important for the entire meta)
When Emma and Killian are together in a shot, they’re properly lit and you can see their faces clearly.
When they kiss, the lighting is extremely bright and manages to capture the entirety of both their faces.
I don’t know about you but I’m pretty sure that this reflects their lives when they’re with each other. Emma is Killian’s light just as much as Killian is Emma’s. Together they share light-hearted moments worth shining a light upon as opposed to all the dark times in their lives.
THAT is what I think the intention of the lighting is in this part of the scene.
Now let’s fast forward to after Emma enters the apartment and closes the door…
I never ignore the visuals of the mise en scène (everything that appears in front of the camera) in a shot. So what’s so special about this moment?
^^ This is when Emma closes the door and is no longer in the presence of Killian. Not only do we see the light on Killian’s face disappearing, we also see that Killian is standing more towards the right side of the mise en scène/shot. This somehow gives an illusion that there’s something missing in the shot and as it is missing, it’s somewhat sad. The audience sees that Emma is what’s missing since she was previously standing to the left of the frame. As Emma is missing, so is the light that was previously there. Or in other words, Killian’s light.
(I shall rewind back to when I said that I’ve been told lighting, or lack of lighting, is often used deliberately)
Killian’s face turning dark also reflects his past life as a pirate and what his life was like before Emma. Past!Killian didn’t have love (not after when Liam and Milah died) nor did he have light in his life.
What I’m trying to say is: this use of cinematography further addresses and reflects how much Emma means to Killian.
With Emma, his life has moments worth shining a light on.
The lighting also shows how much Killian means to Emma when they’re both under bright lighting. i’M SORRY I DON’T EVEN KNOW WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT ANYMORE I’M JUST A BUNDLE OF EMOTION LYING ON THE FLOOR LEAVE ME BE
oh and i’m sorry this was rUDE
I just wanted to throw this out there after what happened in the episode last night. Jen said this while they were just wrapping filming on episode 7. Not only do I absolutely believe Hook’s hand was cursed and Rumple used Hook’s insecurities against him to make him believe it wasn’t, I also think he’s going to come clean with Emma within 2-3 episodes. It doesn’t change the fact that Hook DID mess up last night, but as you can see from Jen’s tweet… when someone asked what Hook’s BEST quality is, this is what came to mind for her.
Have some faith in our boy — he let Rumple get the best of him and he had a bit of a backslide as a result but, he WILL beat this. He beat Pan’s manipulations and he will beat Rumple’s. Like Jen said, he has a FIERCE determination to be a better man and what he’s doing with Rumple obviously does not sit well with him. Pan underestimated Hook & Emma’s feelings for each other and so did Rumple. He tried to turn Hook’s love for Emma into a weapon and it is going to backfire in his face.
When Emma was battling her demons, Hook never left her side. He never let her forget that he believes in her and that she’s loved. And now she’s letting go of her past and becoming a beautiful, more enlightened version of herself and he had a hand in that. (No pun intended, haha) Emma knows this. We’ve already seen her trying to reassure him and comfort him this season…she will stand by him. She will remind him that he’s a hero and that she believes in him. I know it hurts but this is going to be SO GOOD in the long run. THIS is how Emma will inspire Killian this season. He’s going to see her let go of her baggage and embrace her magic and stand beside him and I just know it’s going to help him do the same.
"At the end of the day, Hook is a hero… he’s just not comfortable with admitting that to himself"
Emma won’t give up on the person she loves. And she won’t let Killian give up on himself. Killian was going to have to face his past eventually. He was going to come to this crossroad sooner or later. You don’t just decide to change after 300 years of being someone else and never mess up. There is beauty in the struggle and that’s what we’re seeing. Rumple was right, he DID do him a favor but, it wasn’t the one Rumple had in mind. This situation will ultimately help Kililan believe in himself and Emma will see him through it.
I am actually a huge Hook fan, I just get stressed everytime I see that kind of plot. If Rumple was full of shit and the hand was indeed cursed then yes, I understand why his inner darkness manifested at that particular time. If he was telling the truth I just didn't get why would his inner darkness manifest now, when everything was going so great for him. The woman he loves has finally opened up to him ans is ready to have a relationship, he's been accepted by everyone. Why now?
All right, darling. I apologize for misreading your first message.
The simple truth is that Killian Jones has low self-worth. And I know that sounds ridiculous since the man is always boasting about how handsome he is and his sex appeal and how he’s good in a fight, but really, those are the only things he boasts about. That’s where his confidence lies. He knows he’s hot, he knows he can satisfy a woman in bed and he knows he can kick anyone’s ass.
But there is a darkness in him and a self-loathing that makes him question his place in Emma’s world. He’s done terrible things. He believed at the time and maybe even now, that he did them for the right reasons, but that doesn’t make them any less terrible. That doesn’t make him any less of a pirate. And he loves Emma so much and he wants to be the best version of himself for her and he is, but because he has so many misgivings and so much guilt about the stuff he’s done in the past, it’s very easy to trigger his fears.
When we first heard that Killian would get his hand back, there was an ugly debate about it - whether it was sending the wrong message that he needs a hand to be whole. But it turned out that wasn’t the reason he wanted it at all. He wanted to be able to hold Emma with both hands because he believes that she deserves that - a man without a hook, a tool he’s used to bring fear and pain to his enemies for 300 years. He wanted to go as the best version of himself, and it wasn’t about needing a hand to be whole, it was about not having the reminder of the man he was hanging from his wrist. Same thing with his clothes. He changed them to distance himself and their date from his past because he’s moving forward with Emma and finally finding happiness.
And that is exactly why now, to answer your question. Because Killian was honest with Rumple when Rumple asked why he wanted his hand back and then he took advantage of that. Whether or not the hand was actually cursed doesn’t matter at all because Rumple put the seeds of doubt in Killian’s mind. He reminded him of how he used to behave and then he took advantage of his weak moments to force him into getting in even deeper - just like he did with Anna in the past. And Killian might not have Anna’s innocence, but he’s a man in love, wanting the absolute best for his love, and Rumple took that and manipulated it and used it against him, just like Zelena did when she cursed his lips last season.
It is frustrating to watch because we know that Emma and the Charming family would support him in a heartbeat if he’d gone to them and told the truth right away. Even if he does it now, they’d still support him and believe him because he’s proven himself and they care about him. But Killian doesn’t have the faith in himself to believe that. He knows they’re good people, but he still doesn’t believe that he deserves to have a place with them. And Rumple’s counting on that. He’s counting on his fears and his doubts so that he can continue to manipulate him into doing his bidding.
#Bullshit
I love that THIS is the moment you can see exactly when Killian knows that something is not right. Rumplestiltskin himself saying that he will cooperate. The tic in Colin’s jaw is subtle, but it’s this almost as much as the shift of his eyes (which had been consciously looking away from the man he still hates), that tells the viewer that the character knows that Rumple is lying. He may have suspected that Belle had a fake dagger, but the Dark One’s eagerness to “prove” that he’s turned over a new leaf by having his wife USE it to compel him that reveals the truth of Killian’s belief. Rumple NEVER does anything without making a deal; Rumple always finds a way to screw people over, especially if they have made a deal with him (like Emma going to New York, finding his son, AND making his son talk to him in exchange for custody of Ashley’s baby—which, according to law, she would have had the right to custody even beyond the signing of any legal adoption documents). Once again, Colin’s acting choice was pure perfection, saying everything and nothing with the twitch of a muscle or the direction of his gaze.
#this is the face of a man who spent 300 years in hell fulfilling by hate and revenge #realizing that he matters to someone #and this someone happens to be his love #the woman he traded his ship for #he’s fucking realizing that someone - EMMA SWAN - cares about him #about his safety #about his life #this is Killian Jones realizing that he matters to Emma Swan #let me die in peace pls
