the tragedy of daniil dankovsky is that he’s dedicated all of himself to destroying death to such a degree that in the process he’s distanced himself from life so much that he doesn’t even remember what all of this was originally for in the first place. that’s why he’s so ruthlessly desperate, so seemingly removed from other people, so out of touch with the world - this fight against an impossible adversary is all he has, he’s probably even made sure of that himself. he has literally made death his life, built it around the very thing he seeks to overcome. I don’t know what happened to him to make him like this, but I don’t think it’s farfetched to assume it was related to loss, and I don’t think it’s unreasonable to assume he is incredibly lonely and miserable and consumed by world-weariness. this is not a man who doesn’t care, or if so, then only out of absolute fatigue and exhaustion. he’s more than just a heartless asshole.
