Inexplicable

@inexplicifics / inexplicifics.tumblr.com

Fell headfirst into the Witcher fandom, and not quite sure what I'm doing. inexplicifics on AO3.

I think Jan would be a beta. Simply because in the nobility/barony it was a sign of status (no matter the truth or person) to have a beta steward. But he also embodies a lot of traits ...

I would find both Alpha!Julita and Omega!Julita interesting.

Avatar

Yeah, I like Jan as a beta.

Julita I like as an omega so she can be a bit of a foil to Milena: an omega who chooses her own lover, decides on her own life path, and is supported unconditionally by the adults in her life.

Re: AWAU omegaverse, I love the idea of Zia giving people fits 😂

I think Zofia might be an alpha - and it thinking maybe Auckes is either beta or omega 🤔 I'm leaning beta

I *do* wonder if these same dynamics would apply to MBTT 🤔

Alpha!Zofia makes a lot of sense - and makes her going off to be a mercenary slightly less scandalous, too. Auckes as a beta also checks out.

MBTT...hm. Probably a few differences, yeah.

Hiii! So your newest story got me binging your A/B/O fics (again) and got me wondering…

If AWAU was set in A/B/O, what dynamics would the main characters be? And would it have changed anything?

Avatar

Ooooh what an interesting question. Alright, let's see how I'd make the AWAU omegaverse. I'm not going to do everyone, but I'll try to hit the main characters and relationships.

  • Jaskier: The obvious play is to go omega, but I think that's wrong. I think he's a beta, and therefore assumed he wouldn't be vulnerable to the "send off a less-valued child as tribute" ploy. This also explains why he was allowed to go to Oxenfurt and be a bit wild while there, as an omega might not - and why he's not higher in the line of succession for the county, as an alpha son might be.
  • Geralt: Again, the obvious choice is alpha, due to the whole Warlord of the North thing. But he didn't do that on purpose, after all, and part of the evolution of his relationship with Jaskier is Jaskier seeing past the Warlord-of-the-North mystique to the person beneath. Also, I'm going to assume that Witchers in the omegaverse AWAU have a method of concealing their scents, so as to mitigate issues with outsiders. So I think the feared and fearsome Warlord, who everyone assumes must be alpha among alphas, dominant and terrible, is an omega.
  • Eskel: Alpha. Of the "care for my pack" variety, specifically - he'll work himself to the bone looking out for the people who are his. And, occasionally, go avenge them on their enemies in dramatic and extremely violent fashion. And having a demisexual alpha pleases me.
  • Lambert: Again, very tempting to go alpha, with that temper. But I'm going to go beta, actually. He's just bad-tempered by nature and nurture - and getting less so as his life gets better. And the fact that he wasn't an alpha is part of why his father was so willing to sell him off.
  • Milena: Oooh, I'm not sure where to go here. Let's go with omega, because her parents do expect her to be a nice obedient pawn for them to move around and marry off as they please. And also it gives Lambert something else to be insecure about, the poor lad. (No, she does not want an alpha. She's very happy with him. Yes, even in her heats.)
  • Marika: Beta. Cool-headed and calm and rational, by stereotype and nature both. She's going to be a very good queen.
  • Griffin: Also a beta. Has never particularly wanted to be an alpha. Is genuinely glad that he doesn't have to deal with heat or rut; they seem deeply inconvenient.
  • Marta: She's an alpha, which explains why their parents were so willing to cut her so much slack and indulge her in so many things. I'm not sure how inheritance rules work in this variant of omegaverse, but she may even be heir to the duchy, right up until she kidnaps Jaskier and Eskel and Milena and experiences Consequences for possibly the first time ever.
  • Aiden: Alpha, because it makes his preference for bottoming even more scandalous to anyone outside the Witcher society. He's a cocky, charming, dangerous man and he knows it. He does have a bit of a temper but he's good at controlling it, and it blows over quickly.
  • Aleksander: Also alpha, because it makes him even more like his despised grandfather and he hates it. He doesn't want to be that sort of swaggering monster. Aiden's cheerful arrogance confuses him at first, the flirtation really baffles him, and eventually he's going to settle on Eskel as his role model, because that style of looking after His People makes sense to Sasha.
  • Livi: Omega - Duke Velen had strong preferences. Which probably means all the Mantikittens are omegas, too. Zia is going to surprise some people.
  • Dragonfly: Alpha, and has recently discovered her doting instincts.
  • Yennefer: Null, because she's a mage; their dynamics are removed during the ascension process. That said, I think she was an omega prior to that.
  • Triss: Also null, because she's a mage. Probably a beta before that.
  • and finally, Ciri: Oooh, this is the hardest one. But I think she's an alpha. And if she takes after her Papa in ferocity and her Uncle Eskel in protectiveness, she's going to be magnificent.

That's the best I've got - anyone else got thoughts?

Is Vesper an OC? Because I have fully adopted her and my head cannons for her are amazing (to me). One day I may even actually write them as fic (adds to my own WIP list :P)

Yes, Vesper is an OC, as is Rach. I haven't fleshed them out as fully as I'd like to, so please do feel free to play with her!

So I was thinking about the second fic in the AWAU recommended reading order (the one from Eskel’s POV) and I was wondering if you had plans of writing something like that in regards to Lambert? I mean you could write similar for the other boys in Geralt and Eskel’s class who lived, but Lambert seems closer to Eskel and Geralt than Gweld or Gardis, and we know Lambert has an interesting story about going to Kaer Morhen, he was a Surprise Child like Ciri, rather than an abandoned bastard child like Geralt

I don't currently have any plans to write a fic like that from Lambert's POV, no. His childhood was miserable, and so was most of his adulthood up until fairly recently as Witchers experience time. I have given him some closure in New Joy, and I'm not sure writing his childhood pain would fit in the series at this point.

In AWAU, did Geralt ever get to meet Visenna? I know in the books, he only meets his mom because she’s healing people near Sodden where he got injured coincidentally around the time that the North was fighting off Nilfgaard, but if Nilfgaard didn't invade when Ciri was like 8, did Geralt ever get the closure of being able to tell the woman who abandoned him that his family was at Kaer Morhen? Did he ever get to look at her and realize that to him, she was pretty much a druidess like any other, and didn't feel important to him like he thought she might?

In the AWAU, Geralt has not at this point met Visenna. I suppose that could change during the Progress, if it seems appropriate to the story, but I don't currently have a bunny.

hi inex! I wanted to let you know that I spend so much time thinking about your fics that they have successfully invaded my dreams!

I had a very long, involved dream last night about being a kaer morhen stablehand and having to look all over the woods for Stormy because someone forgot to latch his stall door. (he eventually turned up at the bastion- maybe he missed the nilfgaard contingent?)

This delights me, thank you for telling me about it! He probably wanted to talk to some horses without Nordling accents 😂

Hi Inex, I was just wondering how far apart in age the de Roggeven girls are in age? They don’t seem too far, but they also don't really seem like they were all born over like 3 years, either. Also, we know Milena was too young and only learned the details of Jask being given as tribute in AWAU when he came back for the treaty signing, but what about her sisters? How much do they know about what went down? Did they know anything at the time? If they knew when it happened at the time (or in the year and a bit between him coming back to scandalize Tretogor), what were their opinions at the time?

There are two to three years between each, so Marta is five or six years older than Milena, with Marika in the middle. Marta and Marika were both at court when Jaskier was chosen as tribute. Marta's take was roughly "better him than me, and powerful men do often like being given tribute," while Marika's was "this seems unwise but I have no power to do anything about it."

Do you have a favorite OC? Livvy is delightful but Sasha's story felt richer to me, there was more that surprised me and made me wonder how he would face the next issue. And being a man and an elder son from a patriarchal culture made the strictures placed on him or he placed on himself to not remind anyone of his grandfather more complex. But Mouse planning her lowkey escape and greeting Uncle Treyse has so much potential too. Jan the king of the castle! Many great characters!

My favorite OC is Milena, of course. But Sasha has a lot of my own social anxieties and reliance on scripts, Jan my pleasure in Organizing Things, Livi my delight in spreadsheets, Mouse my love for Knowing Things.

i’m rereading the renfri fic and i realized that we see fredefalk’s explanation for basically fleeing creyden (pathetic little coward 😠) but we never see what happened in hengfors- did grzegorz have a good reason for not sending him back to yspaden? or was he just not paying that much attention? (thank you forever and ever for blessing us with so much incredible writing, rereading your entire body of work is the only thing keeping me sane around my family for the holidays 😫)

I think Grzegorz looked at the tax rolls from Creyden and went, "Well, seems to be running alright, and it's handy having Fredefalk around whenever I need him, guess he's got a competent wife," and got on with his life.

(I hope your sanity remains intact, and I'm glad my work can help!)

Someone was playing "I Need A Hero" at work last night, and now I can't shake the image of Jaskier singing that *as dramatically as possible* while Geralt sits and turns more and more red. And Eskel right beside him in the same boat. Especially when he croons the last chorus as "I found a hero, I found a hero in my darkest night. He's always been strong, and he's always been fast, and he never backs down from a fight." The other humans with witcher lovers probably find it a very sweet song as well.

Avatar

Jaskier would absolutely sing the hell out of that gleefully in the great hall, and Geralt would indeed be extremely red about it.

Also secretly (well, for a Witcher value of secretly, given that everyone around him can smell it) so very happy, because he's wanted to be a hero since he was very small, and now he is.

Avatar

Firstly, Hi from the pacific northwest! Accidental Warlord is a delight, I have loved watching it grow, and I *will* be rereading it again for the something-th time (I think I'm in double digits at this point).

Secondly, considering all the talk about coinage, the next step for the Wolf lands would probably be central/national banking -- followed by banknotes and the like. May I propose: Geralt gets a bank named after him. Because that is too funny *not* to exist.

Happy Holidays and have some good cheer~! ʕっ•ᴥ•ʔっ💕

Avatar

Geralt would be Deeply Unhappy if someone named a bank for him, poor man. But he'd probably approve of a cross-Wolflands banking network of some sort.

Happy holidays! I'm glad my work repays re-reading!

Avatar

I hope you know that now every single time (which is a LOT of times) I think about Geralt calling Eskel his “good right hand” I start blushing and kicking my feet. It’s just such an intimate and romantic thing to sayyyyyy

Avatar

It's all about the trust and the loyalty and the reciprocated devotion!

Avatar

I also reread Flung To Catch A Star after the ask about Ivar's comic song (and am now resisting the urge to draft such a song myself). There's a spot where Jaskier suggests sending one of Ciri's geese to Emhyr, and I just *LOVE* the chaotic possibilities of that gift!

Avatar

Of course Emhyr wouldn't be able to refuse such a gift - from the Warlord's own daughter! Trained by her own hand! - and of course Ciri would have trained the goose to, for instance, peck anyone wearing royal Nilfgaardian regalia very hard on the ankles. But you can't kill the Important Gift Goose. And it has a positive knack for getting out of its enclosure. And are we sure it's not magical? Really, really sure?
