This comic from Lilo the Autistic Queer (@A_Silent_Queer on Twitter) made me smile today. There is no one way to look trans, and no one way to transition. However you choose to express your authentic self is good and doing what makes you happy regardless of what cis people think is good.

So many beautiful trans people out there. All of them are valid in who they are. Also, the points about "wants HRT/wants surgery" etc. are important; not everyone has access to what they'd need to transition the way they'd want to. People questioning anyone's trans-ness because someone doesn't fit into whatever they imagine a trans person should be is incredibly hurtful and quite often adds insult to injury.

I can already tell just by the notes people are going to misunderstand me so let me clarify I understand that this is necessary and a good thing. The study needs to exist and more research should be done! I’m merely just frustrated that this is our reality.

Friend, a five year old should not have puberty to block. If they do that's called precocious puberty and is the original reason puberty blockers were invented. If a five year old is going through puberty I absolutely endorse them being given puberty blockers

And it doesn’t go even close to that far without a strong medical reason. Gender affirming care for kids is clothes, a haircut, and words. Literally nothing that can’t be reversed by doing what you were already doing.

Maybe you’re right and the kid will change their mind next week. Okay, great! Learning about themselves by experimenting is what kids are supposed to do, and this is a great time to start.

The Selbstbestimmungsgesetz (self-identify law) allows trans and intersex people to change their name and gender in the civil registry much more easily than before by submitting a self-disclosure form. This will be possible starting on the 1. November 2024 while the self-disclosure forms can be submitted as early as 1. August 2024 because of the 3 month waiting period in the law. After a name and gender change the person will be barred from changing it again for one year. People of ages 14-17 will need the approval of a legal guardian to change their gender and name while for children under 14 the legal guardians can submit a form for the change.

When Hitler rose to power as German chancellor in 1933, he enacted policies to rid the country of Lebensunwertes Leben, or "lives unworthy of living." His targets included Jews, Roma people, disabled people and communists-but also specifically homosexuals and transsexuals.

While many are familiar with haunting images of the first book burnings in Germany, which took place in May of 1933, most aren't fully aware of their origin story.

The books and texts that provided the fuel for that first bonfire came from the library of the Institute for Sexual Research, founded in 1919 by Magnus Hirschfeld, a gay, Jewish doctor. As Scientific American notes, the Institute was "full of life everywhere" and provided incredible and groundbreaking gender affirmation care to trans individuals. Its mission was to provide a center for "research, teaching, healing and refuge" that could "free the individual from physical ailments, psychological afflictions and social deprivation."

In other words, the first book burning in Germany, which led to copycat bonfires around the country, was an attack on a trans care institution. There are echoes of this today: The far-right has specifically chosen to target trans care centers in America, including repeated bomb threats to Boston Children's Hospital, for providing gender affirming medical care.

Where is the line between genuine stupidity and malicious intent and why do some people just know how to cross that line so self-righteously while pretending to be all innocent?

Doctors to trans people: are you really sure you want these hormones? I don't think you are. I don't believe you. There are risks, you know? It will change your body. Tell me your entire life story and I'll decide whether you've wanted this for long enough. Oh you didn't know when you were 5 years old? Yikes, ok. I think I'll need you to jump through all these hoops and then we can maybe consider it in...100 years

Doctors to fat people who literally didn't ask: have you heard of this surgery that'll mess up your digestive system, just absolutely fucking mutilate it? Mess with your ability to eat and drink normally? Potentially fuck up your ability to absorb nutrients? Yes, and you don't want it? Are you suuuure? Are you really sure? I'm going to bring this up 1000 more times just to be sure also there's this diabetes drug...

Just reading this makes me all the more appreciative of my current GP who would never ever say either of those things. I remember how startled I was at my first appointment when he outright asked me what I wanted and needed from him as my new doctor, not even addressing the obvious elephant in the room.
