A Lesson In HUGS

Hugs aren’t just warm and fuzzy, and not all hugs are the same. Among men, there are two main types of frontal hugs (hugs made when you’re facing each other vs. just sidearm hugs). HUG #1 — THE DUDEBRO HUG

This hug communicates brotherly affection and friendliness. What makes it unique, in order of importance: 1. Your head goes to left of the other man’s head (over his right shoulder). 2. Usually, one of your arms is above the other man’s shoulder, and your other arm is below the other man’s shoulder. 3. You usually pat the other man’s shoulders while hugging. Sometimes, if you’re feeling particularly possessive (and want the hug to last), you may forgo the patting and just grip the other man solidly.

HUG #2 — THE INTIMATE HUG This hug communicates intimacy and/or vulnerability. It may also communicate romantic feeling. What makes it unique, in order of importance: 1. Your head goes to the right of the other man’s head (over his left shoulder).  This position is unconsciously chosen because it aligns heartbeats. 2. Usually, both arms are either above the other man’s shoulders (if you’re the dominant and/or taller of the two) or below the other man’s shoulders (nearing the smaller back and waist). These positions are unconsciously chosen because they feel more possessive. 3. While shoulder patting may accompany this hug (which would communicate enthusiasm), these hugs more often don’t involve patting but rather employ tight gripping. Sometimes they start with a single pat, then finish with a grip. The more solid gripping is unconsciously chosen because it feels more intimate and possessive.

IMPORTANT: It should be noted that we almost always choose these hug positions sub-consciously. If you’ve ever had an awkward hug, it’s usually because the two of you approached the hug from different emotional spaces. (One of you went for a hug on the right to express intimacy or vulnerability, the other went for the hug on the left to express friendship. Likewise with the arm positions.)

NOW FOR SOME REAL LIFE EXAMPLES:

Their heads are to the right of each other (INTIMATE HUG), and neither of Jensen’s arms go over Misha’s shoulder (again, INTIMATE).

Since Jensen is the taller of the two, the fact that both his arms are below Misha’s shoulders means that either Misha was feeling more dominant when he initiated this hug or Jensen was feeling more submissive.

Jensen also tightly grips (no patting) while Misha pats. Contrast this to the hug Misha gives to Ty moments later, which is classic DUDEBRO:

Here are some more classic DUDEBRO hugs. These are easy to spot because this is how almost all men hug all other men:

Now let’s go to the more complicated hugs, the ones that give us mixed signals and don’t fall neatly into either category. Consider this hug between Misha and Rob:

While there’s butt touching going on, this is NOT an intimate or vulnerable hug. That’s because their heads are to the left (over each other’s right shoulders)  and Rob’s arms are in the classic DUDEBRO over-under positions. This is a DUDEBRO hug that’s spoofing intimacy by being grabby.

Here’s another complicated hug:

Because their heads are on the left, this falls under DUDEBRO.

However, unlike a classic DUDEBRO hug which equalizes both men by having their arms go over-under, this is a slightly more INTIMATE version where both men have both their arms in the under position (which is equally submissive — they’re both submitting to each other). And finally, there’s no patting at all, but rather gripping, which is the more INTIMATE of actions and communicates mutual possessiveness. So for 2/3 criteria, it’s an intimate hug. It’s just not as intimate as it COULD be because their heads are on the left.

Anonymous asked:

could you please elaborate on how you think that jensen acts differently with misha versus jared? i've noticed that j2 act pretty douche-y sometimes when they're together. thanks for answering.

Well, to start with, the Jensen that’s with Misha is a little more… open? He lets Misha cross boundaries that he doesn’t let Jared cross.

FOR EXAMPLE:

vs.

To me, the difference isn’t necessarily because there’s something romantic between J & Misha, but because Misha brings out a side of Jensen that’s a little more self-secure and relaxed.

With Jared, the vibe is very dudebro, and Jensen does a lot of over compensating. He’s got his most masculine, heteronormative foot forward.

With Misha, the vibe is far more relaxed. He’s more willing to do things that might make the audience question his sexuality. For example, Jensen is willing to dance TOGETHER vs. just on the same stage, more willing to dance suggestively than just like a goofball.

Plus the kind of humor Jensen has with Jared is sometimes (only sometimes!) kinda douchey — generally by making fun of people and insulting their masculinity by calling them “girl” (if they identify as male), etc.

But when he’s with Misha, his humor is full of sexual innuendos (particularly on set, remember 9x06) and he seems okay insulting HIMSELF. He’s willing to laugh at himself around Misha, and I just don’t see that when he’s around Jared.

And finally, when Jensen is with Jared, their joint body language is towards the audience. They’re a team, a brotherhood, facing the audience down.

But with Misha, their body language is towards each other. They’re in their own little world, and Jensen can forget about the audience and just have fun.

ETA: I didn’t answer this as a Cockles vs J2 (romantic ship) post in body language because I already have a bunch of those.

I was assuming you were referring to a recent post of mine where I said I like the side of Jensen that we see when he’s around Misha better than the side we see when he’s around Jared.

“It was miserable. I spent about four hours in prosthetics ’cause all those hooks and pieces through the wrists and cuffs and everything, and once I was done I walked on stage and they hooked me up. Cuffs around both wrists and both ankles and then just a belt harness [around my waist] so I was wired up with five different wires. Five guys wrenched me up about 13 feet in the air. I had so much [fake] blood all over me, the harness slipped and the buckle was piercing into my hip. I’m hanging there, all of my weight on this one buckle digging into my hip, and I hung there for what felt like ages and it got so bad that tears were rolling down my face and I was like, ‘let me down, you gotta let me down.’ It was tough, but it turned out to be a really cool shot.”
The sequence was miserable for Ackles, who spent four hours in make-up having the various hooks and other prosthetics applied. Wired cuffs around his wrists and ankles, as well as a harness around his waist, were used to lift him 13 feet into the air in front of a green screen. To his discomfort, the harness slipped, causing its buckle to continuously dig into his hip throughout the scene’s three or four takes. The actor, who “had tears rolling down his face” as he was lowered down, deemed it the most physical pain he has endured for a single shot.
