pattimurin Aisha Jackson was the Anna standby at Frozen on Broadway. She is not only an incredibly talented woman who was just about to originate a role in the new Britney Spears musical that would have taken her star into the stratosphere when the pandemic hit, but she is one of the bravest, most self assured, and strongest humans I’ve ever met.

And while Aisha was standing by in Frozen, I never acknowledged the barriers she was breaking as a black woman playing a traditionally white role in a Disney musical on Broadway. I failed her as a friend and as a colleague, and it’s one of the biggest alarm bells that I did not recognize my privilege as a white person. Sure, I would shout out when she was going on sometimes, but never did I celebrate her for crashing through one of those seemingly impossible to break walls that BIPOC face daily in the world, and in our industry. I regret this immensely, and I’m ashamed of myself for this.

Aisha is a treasure. She is loved universally by the people who surround her. She is kind, funny and gentle. She is also tough as nails and fearless. And everyone who had the experience of seeing her play Anna was blown away by her performance, her spirit, and her heart. If ever confronted with someone telling her Anna couldn’t be black, her response was merely, “Well I’m black, and I’m Anna.” Simple and true.

Aisha, you took that challenge and you smashed through it with grace and beauty. You made it your mission to spread the message that anyone can be whoever and whatever they want, no matter what society tells them. You undoubtedly changed lives in such a profound way, and you will have be hearing stories for the rest of your life from people who saw you as Anna in Frozen on Broadway and were inspired to become who they have become. You are amazing.

I have so much to learn from Aisha. I’ve apologized to her, but that’s not nearly enough. I’m committing myself to being MORE than just enough, for Aisha, for all of my non-white friends, and for every single BIPOC from the past, the present, and those who have yet to set foot on this earth.

Caissie Levy’s last “Let It Go” from Frozen the Musical, 2/16/20. She optioned up to the high heavens and it was otherworldly. Enjoy my structured breathing and sobbing at the end. 😂 The whole night was absolutely incredible - I’m so thankful I was there to witness it.

Listening to this i feel like a six year old girl who just got to see the frozen movie for the first time
