“Jere?” she asks, eyes locked on the road.
“Will we ever have to stop driving?”
The sun is already dipping behind the horizon and the light bounces off her rings, her hands tightly gripping the wheel. The shades can’t block her eyes from me in this angle, can’t cover the tears threatening to spill from them.
“We will...” a pause. “Some day.”
Maraia doesn’t look at me, just nods and cranks the volume up. I take another cigarette out and light it up as we drive down the highway out of some-town and into another-town.
