The Immaturity of Thomas Astruc

@immaturityofthomasastruc / immaturityofthomasastruc.tumblr.com

Analyzing the online behavior of Thomas Astruc, the creator of Miraculous Ladybug. When I'm not doing that, I'm talking about Miraculous Ladybug itself, and some other shows depending on the subject. DISCLAIMER: While I support free speech and people expressing their views through my asks and submissions, I may not agree with everything being said in asks or reblogs. If I make a mistake in one of my posts, don't hesitate to point it out. Just tell me how I can improve as politely as possible. Despite the content of this blog, I hold no ill will towards Thomas Astruc as a person, and I do not support harassing him online or sending death threats his way. This is a critical blog, not a hate blog. At the same time, my views on certain topics shouldn't be taken as fact. Please try not to send asks about certain episodes until after I review them. You (and most of rwde): "I wish these two characters that were confirmed queer in 2023 had been allowed to be confirmed queer earlier than that"

Some loser without any reading comprehension: "I'm sick of all you homophobes and your homophobic impulse to *checks notes* wish that an uncensored media production corporation had canonized these characters as queer sometime earlier than 2023. Only a homophobe would openly want more queer content. Only a homophobe would openly ask for more queer content. Only a homophobe would openly desire more queer content. I am Very Smart."

Exactly!

I joined the RWBYCritics subreddit during Volume 8, and the common consensus wasn't that critics necessarily hated the idea Blake and Yang being a couple, people just wanted the writers to stop with the vague situation they were in after they killed Adam at the end of Volume 6 (which would have made sense for them to at least consider a romantic relationship afterwards), and just make the ship canon already.

Also, if you want to talk about homophobia, maybe direct it at Rooster Teeth, the studio behind RWBY, because they have a history of actually discriminating against their LGBT workers.

Damn what a coward that anonymous guy obsessed with the Bumblebee, he looks like a frustrated shipper. I don't know if he can be blocked or reported but don't reply to him anymore.

Avatar

It's fine. I haven't gotten any other asks like that.

It's weird how Bumbleby shippers act like they're an oppressed bunch, yet the second someone like me has the slightest problem with the ship (even if it has nothing to do with the fact that it's a LGBT ship), they break out every insult in the book.

Or you're just a queerphobic motherfucker like the rest of RWDE who's just pissed off that Blake doesn't belong to Sun, and are convinced that the only reason anyone would write a queer relationship is for the sake of pandering. Get fucked, you worthless stalker-blog.

What does me saying Bumbleby could have gotten together earlier have to do with Sun, much less me being a homophobe? How did you ever draw that conclusion?

This is one of the reasons I dropped the show in the first place, because the second I say the slightest critical thing about it, people assume the worst about me.

I'd say something else, but you'd probably twist that into meaning I'm somehow a racist too.

So the choice is to believe CRWBY or some rando on Tumblr about Bumbleby being planned from the start. Yeah, you're an idiot.

What does me saying Bumbleby could have gotten together earlier (especially since Volumes 7-8 gave them several chances to do so after the confrontation with Adam) have to do with me being an idiot?

All I said was that a working theory some viewers have was that they ended the "Will they or won't they?" drama to win over enough fans in order for Volume 10 to be greenlit.

I didn't insult Bumbleby shippers or the FNDM. I just criticized how long it took for the ship to become canon despite CRWBY saying it was planned from the start.

About your Determination review; you said it about the show dragging out the love square. Because in case of Blake and Yang, they are a same sex couple. Back in 2013, how much LGBTQ+ rep was there? People are STILL fighting to get proper representation out there, like the queen Dana Terrance herself, yet Adrien and Marinette are a straight couple that wouldn't become censored like Amity's and Luz's famous "would you like to dress up and travel together?"

The thing with RWBY is that it's a web series that was made by an independent company for a while, so it doesn't have to worry about network mandates or higher-ups dismissing the idea of a same-sex couple. For all intents and purposes, Yang and Blake could have gotten together as early as Volume 1 if Rooster Teeth wanted them to, but they chose to wait until Volume 9 to do it.

Even then, some people theorize that Bumbleby being canon is really the show's Hail Mary, a way to convince Warner Bros to greenlight Volume 10 in spite of them cancelling shows left and right.

It’s not related to Astruc, but what do you think of the new RWBY anime that’s going to take creative liberties with the main series?

Hey, remember when everyone thought the reason behind Volume 9 being held off until early 2023 was because the higher-ups wanted to give the writers and animators more time to work instead of putting them on a time crunch?

I mean, who asked for either of these? Ice Queendom is pretty much an elseworlds story with no connection to the main show, and just the idea of Team RWBY meeting the Justice League just sounds like a fanfiction with a movie budget.

There’s already a lot cases of productions cut short by Warner Bros, so wouldn’t it be kind of funny in a morbid way if RWBY got cancelled before it could finish its run because the creators were more focused on these side-projects?

between rwby and miraculous ladybug, which would you say has more writing problems at large (not small ones, but like bigger picture issues with continuity, storytelling, show-don't-tell, retcons, etc.)?

to me, while both rwby and miraculous ladybug feel like they're written by white guys who fetishize and romanticize asian culture, it feels like rwby actually tries to pretend to be woke about it, which makes it worse for me. meanwhile ML doesn't bother to do anything deep with racism and etc. in the show (although it does engage in racist/stereotypical writing in the comics and in the show proper).

idk, i'm rambling but i thought i'd get your thoughts.

Avatar

Well, if I had to choose which one was worse between the two in terms of storytelling, worldbuilding, continuity, romantic subplots, social commentary, and behavior of the showrunners... I’d have to give it to RWBY.

If anyone wants a more detailed explanation, I’m game to back up what I’m trying to say here.

I wanted to thank you for responding to that RWBY submission. I appreciate your willingness to have a calm, rational discussion over such a sensitive topic. I still think the characters did the best thing they could, but you have some very insightful points, and I'm convinced it should have been written much better. I like nearly every single suggestion and idea you had for how to improve things. Thank you for taking the time to do this; I'm happy I could learn a few things.

Thank you for being willing to hear me out. The RWBY fandom has become notorious for being divided on criticizing certain aspects of the show, and things only got worse with Volumes 7 and 8, so I wanted to be more polite in how I talked about what I didn’t like about it, instead of simply insulting you for not agreeing with me.

I get it if you still don’t agree with what I said, but I just wanted to make my point clear.

In Regards to the RWBY Post

Sending this as a submission because I suspect this will get long-winded.  Also, I can put a massive line break between this and the post; if you’d rather not bother this with all (perfectly understandable) you should just be able to delete this without reading it.  I think.  I’ve barely used Tumblr since the purge.  Also, I’m perfectly willing to keep this discussion private.

You've talked about RWBY 'glorifying' suicide in the Vol. 8 finale, and I'm not sure what you mean by that. I've watched the episode in question too, and while I hate what they did for a number of reasons, I don't think they glorified it (as I'd use that word). It was a clearly losing fight, Cinder was already coming out on top with one Maiden's powers, and the fact other people made most of Penny's decisions and she got a taste of what it's like to be human makes the choice more impactful. 1/2

Okay, this is a very tense subject for me, so I’ll try not to go off the rails, but I heavily disagree here.

I think why most RWBY fans get defensive is because majority of the "critics" tend to lean towards borderline obsessive hate and continuously just beat a dead horse and should've moved on from the show a long time ago (looking at you RWBY Youtubers), and they also lump a lot of fans into one category and sometimes even harass fans even if they are some of the more chill RWBY fans

I do follow some RWBY critics on Tumblr, as well as the RWBYCritics subreddit, and the criticisms are a lot more level-headed and don’t really bash every single thing that happens on the show while providing some more constructive criticism and bringing some controversies and questionable writing choices that touch on certain topics like abuse and trauma.

If anyone wants to see some RWBY criticism that isn’t just blind hatred and actually criticizes the show, I’d check out @psyga315, @ironpines, and @itsclydebitches.

On the other hand you have people on twitter literally saying that you could power a city by sticking wires in Monty because he’s spinning in his grave so much by how they’ve handled the show after his passing. People use Monty’s name to attack his friends and especially his brother. Neath gets told REPEATEDLY that Monty would be disgusted by him. Does THAT sound level headed to you?

No it doesn't, but there are RWBY critics who don't do either and acknowledge Monty Oum wasn't perfect, but still had some good ideas prior to his death. It's entirely possible to have opinions that don't fall onto either side of this argument.

Seriously what is up with Miraculous constant need to redeem shittiest parents alive??? actually no what is it with miraculous giving shittiest adults a pass because 'they are human' but Teenage girls are purest form of evil atoms have ever created. this is the most awful thing you can teach to kids

I’m sure teaching kids to forgive their deadbeat parents no matter what won’t lead to anything bad happening down the line.

That’s not to say that you shouldn’t at least try to forgive someone for their past, but the show never really goes into how tough the journey to forgiveness is.

There’s an episode of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow where Damien Darhk, a villain who sacrificed himself to stop an ancient demon lord, is resurrected by a new villain to wreak havoc on the timeline, but chooses to forgo his evil ways in favor of attending his daughter's impromptu wedding. When he’s confronted by Sara Lance, the person whose sister he killed years ago, he’s fully aware that what he did is an unforgivable act in her eyes, and that no matter how much good he does, he’s still a cold-blooded killer in her eyes. Even though some of the other Legends tried to forgive Damien for his actions, Sara lets Damien know that she can’t without even saying anything.

It’s a very sobering scene with a perspective on redemption that so many shows and movies ignore, that sometimes, people won’t be able to be fully forgiven by everyone they hurt, and they’ll have to live with it.

Sure, this show is in a completely different age demographic, but it’s generally a more insightful lesson than “Try to forgive anyone you meet who hurt you in the past, except teenage girls.”

@manbehindthebeast

Why did you post a clip depicting suicide? Can you explain what happened a bit more? God, I hope Miraculous Ladybug doesn’t get into topics like suicide because the writers will probably stuff it up.

Okay, I know this sounds complicated, so I’ll try and make it as quick as I can.

At the end of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow’s fourth season, Astra Logue stole several souls of the most evil people in history from Hell and at the beginning of the fifth season, she started to revive them in order to kill more people and damn them to Hell so Astra gets control over their souls too. One of them was Damien Darhk, the man in the video.

Damien was resurrected by Astra with the condition he cause pain and suffering, but chose to check in on his daughter Nora instead. While he’s pissed that she’s allied with the Legends at first, he eventually sees the error of his ways (in addition to remembering his sacrifice at the end of Season 3 and the growth he went through there) and gives his approval for Nora’s boyfriend, Ray, to propose to her.

But because he didn’t fulfil the terms of his agreement with Astra, Damien knew he would be dragged back to hell to be tortured, so he decided to kill himself with an enchanted sword originally belonging to Gregori Rasputin (just go with it, this show is weird) as a way to get it over with, doing it outside so Nora doesn’t see.

I admit that the suicide part was a little unnecessary, and the same thing could have easily been accomplished by having him travel back to hell willingly instead of killing himself.

Alright, you arrogant piece of shit. The fuck you know about RWBY?! You’re just a spineless, selfish asshole who supports the so-called critics and backtracks on your own dung when things become too complicated for your sorry ass! Wanna hate RWBY? Fine. But keep your milquetoast white-guilting drunk shitstain out of my show!

Like all of the other posts on my blog, I want to make it clear that they are strictly my opinions, and not an absolute fact.

While I may not like RWBY at the moment and have criticized some aspects of it while comparing it to Miraculous Ladybug, I am fully aware that there are a lot more people who do enjoy the show, and I get it. If you do like RWBY, I don’t have a problem with that. While I may not agree with your view of the show, I will still respect your opinion, as it is our rights as free citizens to be able to express our own opinions.

On the other hand, I don’t really see how I came across as arrogant or hostile to the show. If I did, know that was not my intention, and if you could explain where I went wrong, I would appreciate that.

My opinions are not the truth. I am not saying that nobody is allowed to like RWBY. In some of my posts (which you can read in the tags below) I was simply explaining why I stopped watching the show because there were some narrative choices that got to me personally, and I know others might not see it that way.

If you enjoy RWBY, that’s fine, but if you think I’m analyzing it the wrong way, I would at least appreciate some citations as to which of my statements you disagree with instead of just saying that I’m wrong.
