“I love how Malcolm often closes his eyes during moments of overwhelming emotion/fear - particularly when it comes to his father. During Ainsley’s interview, he squeezed his eyes shut after Martin’s outburst and again while watching the interview on the TV. That defense mechanism strikes me as something a child might do since the bad person can’t see or get to you as long as you can’t see them. If you just close your eyes, the monster will go away…In many ways, Malcolm had to grow up way too fast.
